About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Solana Beach-based property owner and business leader Daniel Powell is making an almost 2500 mile bike ride for charity.

Powell’s alter ego, philanthropic superhero Captain Challenge is currently cycling cross country, where he started off in Chicago and will finish in Santa Monica.

Riding 66 miles a day in frigid winter temperatures, Powell will make several stops along the way including St. Louis, Flagstaff, Joplin, Oklahoma City, Albuquerque, and right here in Amarillo. …

Fredericksburg, TX

Friday February 25, 2022, 38 km (24 miles) – Total so far: 1,857 km (1,154 miles) Still chilly and overcast. Did a short day to the next town on the route. The weather is supposed to get back to more normal temperatures on Sunday (15c to 25c all next week).

Stopped in to a local bike shop (Hill Country Bicycle, Fredericksburg) and got some minor work done.

Tomorrow will be another short day to the next town on the route if it’s not too bad out there.

John Elwood McKay Jr. October 4, 1967 – February 16, 2022

www.legacy.com

John Elwood McKay Jr. (54 years) Fort Worth, Texas: On February 16, 2022, we were heartbroken with the unexpected death of John Elwood McKay, Jr. as a result of injuries sustained during a cycling accident. John had developed a recent love for cycling after receiving a bike on his 50 birthday and had just become a founding member of the Los Hombres Perdidos Cycling Club. Every day was an adventure with John. He loved nothing more than making those around him happy with his lightheartedness and sense of humor. John was also a sports enthusiast and enjoyed cheering for LSU, the Saints, the Cowboys, the Texas Rangers, and most of all his children, Jacob and Carly. No one was louder or prouder than him on the sidelines of their football, baseball, volleyball, or soccer games. Out of all his passions, John’s greatest one was his family. Spending time with his family was his favorite …

Zwift Meetup Riding Yorkshire Royal Pump Room 8

Texbiker.net Posted on February 26, 2022 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 26, 2022

After watching 5 races on GCN+ before starting today’s Zwift Meetup at 1:05 PM I was ready for some serious Zwifting.

The Wahoo Kickr Snap smart trainer replicated the climbs better than yesterday. So much that from about 14 miles to 14.4 miles the 10%+ climbs slowed me to a crawl and I stood up pedaling out of the saddle. There were many other climbs but this segment was the hardest. The problem today was OBS Studio software ending the live stream at the 34 minute point when it crashed. All this took place on the Yorkshire Royal Pump Room 8 route. No scheduled events looked interesting so I created a meetup. I chose the offered 17.8 distance. I checked my SportTracks log and found I rode part of this route on February 2nd, 2021. The climbing today over the 17.86 miles was 1,617 feet, about 300 feet more than last year.

To help ride the miles and climbs I listened to SirusXM 70’s on 7 playing the American Top 40’s from 2/24/1973.

This was a popular route with other Zwifters passing me and me passing some on the climbs. No large groups like yesterday though.

Yorkshire route scenery was different from Makuri Islands and Watopia. The number of routes is fewer though.

Lots of top results in Strava.

Welcome to West Texas! The Bent Wheel Bash

TMBRA | www.tmbra.org

Camping and Hotels

Those of you have been to our race before know that this event is a benefit for our local police department bike unit. They allow us to use their training academy as our venue as well as the surrounding land for campsites. The money raised from camping goes straight to the police department. So…we love it when people choose to camp instead of going to hotels! However, given the weather forecast, we totally understand if many of y’all want to grab a room at a local hotel or RV campground. We don’t blame you at all for that. It looks like the temps are going to be pretty chilly at night! For those …

All of our friends and family who spend their weekend at RHR and help us put on the race. Without them, the Rocky Hill Roundup just doesn’t happen. To the Hill family who for over 25 years have been letting us play race and make memories on their property. Our series sponsor @cycleprogression for supporting the entire series. Everyone at Race Day Systems (results here) and our wonderful USAC official for …

Layover day in Fredericksburg Texas: Not in the mood to freeze my butt off again!

Thursday February 24, 2022 When I pulled into Fredericksburg yesterday and I saw the forecast for today I knew I wasn’t getting it on the bike so I reserved my hotel for two nights. i’m glad I did since there were snow flurries all day long and the temperature didn’t get above 28°. I slept really well last night. I woke up and went to the lobby for some coffee and muffins and had a fun conversation with the owners father. Turns out his son was returning today from Mexico City after climbing a mountain. His son also does some longest distance biking. Quite the adventurous young man. After a while I walked to a Walmart to get a …

As Demand For Bikes Remains High, Fort Worth Bike Sharing Prepares For Future Growth

By Haley Samsel | patch.com

Another 12 kiosks are expected to be added, with a focus on areas of Fort Worth that have never had access to the bike sharing service.

With the COVID-19 pandemic entering its second year in 2021, Fort Worth Bike Sharing expected to see a slow decline in the number of people using their recognizable red and white B-cycles, available for rent at 59 stations across the city.

Data collected over the past year indicates the opposite. Ridership increased by 4% from 2020, and the service counted 84,073 rides last year compared to 56,348 in 2019, said Jennifer Grissom, the director of Fort Worth Bike Sharing. …

40 Degrees Outside, 70 Degrees Inside. Zwift Dust In The Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on February 25, 2022 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 25, 2022

UAE Tour and Gran Camiño bike races enjoyed much warmer temperatures as I watched on GCN+. 40 degrees outside at the 12:15 PM start of today’s Zwift ride. Maybe it warms up to the 60’s by Sunday. In the meantime Zwift is my biking location. I created a meetup riding the Watopia Dust in the Wind route but I shortened the distance to 15 miles rather than the full 33 miles. I thought this would be the first time on the route but after the ride I check my SportTracks log and found I rode the full route March 5th, 2021 as a solo ride. That took over 2 hours.

At the end of today’s ride it was 44 degrees outside, well below my 60 degree threshold.

The 15 miles today included 2 large climbs and numerous small ones. The total climbing came in at 1,017 feet. I think my Wahoo Kickr Snap smart trainer wasn’t adjusting the resistance for the climbs. I was pedaling at 90 rpm going up hill at 4 to 6 mph and around 130 to 150 watts. The effort didn’t feel like it was changing. About 9 miles I stopped and changed from connecting through the companion app to my desktop computer using the ANT+ dongle. I don’t know if that made a difference because the rods were mostly downhill from there. After the ride I turned the power off and back on for the trainer. I will see how it works tomorrow.

No problems with the live stream today using the OBS Studio program.

I’m waiting for my new glasses to get here. Without them and using a pair of reading glasses I can’t see the small print on my monitors while Zwifting. But I know where the buttons are.

It looks like I will fall short of my 300 road miles for February. Zwift miles looks good considering the days I took off for 2 cataract surgeries. I rode each day starting February 17th through today.

Strava reported two personal records: PR on Jungle Circuit Reverse Lead-In (13:49), PR on Jungle CCW Descent (5:18).
