About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike your way through an urban Texas adventure

BySarah Whalen | www.nationalgeographic.com

Miles of paths guide bikers through Buffalo Bayou Park and over the bayou to reveal sweeping views of the Houston skyline. Here, bikers cross the Rosemont Bridge where local couples have attached hundreds of “love locks” to the railings.

An urban greenspace just west of downtown Houston, Buffalo Bayou Park preserves and celebrates the city’s rich history, culture, and wildlife along the banks of the bayou. From an underground water reservoir turned public space, to a lake that once disappeared, and an impressive bat colony that emerges in the evenings, the park offers so much more than pretty views.

It’s a trove of fascinating stories, discoverable by miles of bike paths. So, hop on a BCycle at one of Houston’s bike share stations, or head to ..

‘The last windfall ’: San Antonio competes for federal money to fix roads, bridges and drainage

Megan Stringer | www.expressnews.com

San Antonio has another chance to fund road, bridge and drainage projects.

The city is preparing for a $1.2 billion bond election, but that money barely puts a dent in the need for infrastructure. Officials have said there are $3.1 billion in drainage projects alone on its to-do list.

But there’s another pile of money up for grabs.

City leaders plan to compete for grants available through the bipartisan infrastructure law signed by President Joe Biden in November. They aren’t suggesting specific projects yet. But officials expect the process to be straightforward after spending much of last fall gathering input on the …

Howdy from Texas

MulletMan93 | ratrodbikes.com

My name is Ryan, I’m about to be 29. And I’ve kind of always liked to tinker with bikes. At one point I had like 27 bikes stuff in a tiny shed at my moms house when I was in middle school. In 2009, I built my first low rider bike. Found almost everything in the trash that someone was throwing out, I put another $150 into it, my dad had a client that offered to paint it for me and being a teenager, I wanted “Bam Margera lambo purple” lol. Later I traded that bike for a drum set. My sister had found another …

Misting, Light Rain. Spring Creek Greenway to Pundt Park

Texbiker.net Posted on February 22, 2022 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 22, 2022

Out the door and on the Cervelo Caledonia at 10:36 AM to start riding the Spring Creek Greenway to Pundt Park. Several new things on today’s ride: new bike shorts, new long sleeve jersey, first time on the greenway with the Cervelo bike. The start was an hour earlier than yesterday and I finished at 1:50 PM, over an hour earlier than yesterday. Getting to the US59 trailhead I rode into a strong headwind, or at least it felt strong. Once I was on the greenway the trees sheltered me some from the wind plus the direction was not into the wind generally.

I hoped the weather would repeat yesterday but ti didn’t. Around mile marker 8 on the way to Pundt Park it started misting. A few times the mist increased to light rain but not for long. I thought I might need to wait at Pundt Park for it to stop but as I made the turn around to head back to US59 it stopped. As I rode back the closer to Jesse Jones Park the mist increased and stayed with me to US59. From there to home the streets were wet and at times I saw rain drops in the curb side puddles. I will wash the Cervelo after the ride.

Weather conditions: start 74 (humidity 80%, dew point 68), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph; finish 72 (humidity 95%, dew point 71), overcast/mist/light rain, wind S 9 mph. The forecast said a high of 80 but it was a couple of degrees lower at the end of the ride. The streets were wet when I rode back into Kingwood. Not what I wanted. Which is worse, cold or wet?

Other cyclists passed me on the greenway. You can see some of them in the video as well as some people skateboarding.

The last time I rode to Pundt Park was on October 15th, 2021. Looking at the previous rides this one was the longest because I added a couple of streets at the beginning to get the mileage over 40. It worked as I biked 41.29 miles. This closed my deficit to my 300 mile February goal to 50.7 miles. For the first time this month I am ahead of the pace to reach the goal. But that may not last long if the weather tomorrow keeps me indoors. The weather forecast looks iffy.

These photos show the Cervelo along the greenway.

When I looked at the ride results on Strava I was surprised by the number segment medals. I don’t think I’ve had that many on a ride.

Search continues for stolen trailer full of bikes belonging to Special Olympics of Texas

By Rudy Koski | www.fox7austin.com

AUSTIN, Texas – A trailer full of bikes belonging to Special Olympics of Texas was stolen this past weekend.

Security camera video shows a truck backing up to a trailer late Friday night at Lake Travis Elementary. It took less than three minutes for a security lock and chain to be cut.

Inside the trailer, there were six bicycles that were to be used Saturday during the Special Olympics Texas – Winter Games. Monday, delegation leader Marissa Sodders was still hoping the thieves would return what they took. …

Now It Warms Up, Another Dog Chase.

Texbiker.net Posted on February 21, 2022 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 21, 2022

Yesterday I complained about the weather being cooler than I expected. Today made up for that by going 5 degrees above the forecast of 78 degrees. I did wait to start today’s bike ride to give the streets time to dry off from the early morning .03″ rain. High humidity and dew point close to the temperature slowed that down some. I probably over dressed with shorts, long sleeve jersey and a short sleeve jersey over it. I used a new pair of Pearl Izumi Elite Gel gloves to go with those. You can see them in the video. While I waited I watched the Tour UAE on GCN+.

Rolling away at 11:36 AM on the Cervelo Caledonia I chose a route that I last rode on 7/21/2021, “Kingwood – FM1314 NW to McQueen Road”. With the warm weather I wanted to ride about 40 miles to make a dent in the remaining miles I need to reach my 300 mile goal for February. I actually rode 40.95 miles cutting the needed miles to 92. The warm weather should stay around until sometime Thursday giving me 3 more days to get those miles. Today’s ride performance was similar to the previous 6 times I rode it in 2021. Today was the longest ride so far on the Cervelo bike and the 2nd longest in 2022 on all my bikes.

With the SRAM Rival AXS eTap shifting I changed gears more than with mechanical gears. The tiny push of the brake paddle changes so quickly and I can see which gear I’m in on the Wahoo Bolt computer. Reminds me of the Shimano Inflight (I think that is the name) computer days.

With the warm weather there was a price to pay, wind gusts of 21 mph. The ride to McQueen Road put me in those gusts for short periods and my legs were up to the fight. The longest section came riding SW on Valley Ranch Parkway to FM 1314. On FM 1314 the wind wasn’t much of a problem and I got my average speed to 14.2 mph. I may have used more energy getting to McQueen Road than I should have because the ride back to the SE was into the wind. My legs held up until I reached Sorters Road. To recover some I stopped at the Circle K for about 8 minutes. I was running low on energy but I didn’t bring anything to eat. I thought the rest would give my legs ready to fight the wind more but around 7 miles to the finish I ran out of energy and slowed to 13 mph with some time below that when the wind was the highest like the southbound frontage road from Kellington to Kingwood Drive.

I talk about another dog chase in the video which may have used energy I needed for the ride back from McQueen Road. I’m ready for a ride without a dog chase.

Weather conditions: start 78 (humidity 76%, dew point 70), cloudy, wind S 9 mph; finish 83 (humidity 61%, dew point 68), mostly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph gusts 21 mph.

The probably helped me get this top result reported by Strava, 2nd fastest time on Stripes-to_OldHoustonRd (24:00). The dog chase was during this segment.
