About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Zwift Makuri Islands Countryside Tour (994 ft. Climbing)

Texbiker.net Posted on February 12, 2022 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 12, 2022

February weather is fickle. After three days of mid 60’s to low 70’s today it refused to get out of the mid 50″s. Inside I went and created a Zwift meetup after checking the other events. Those events were on routes I recently rode and I wanted something new. I chose the Makuri Islands Countryside Tour. This was my first time riding this route though parts of it are familiar. I earned the route badge at 9.8 miles. I should’ve checked the route description at ZwiftInsider.com first to learn there is a significant amount of climbing in the 9.8 mile lap and I set the meetup distance at 16 miles. That meant the end of the ride was going up the big climb. I enjoy meetups because of all of the other Zwifters on the route as you can see in the video thumbnail above.

The brief description of the 9.8 mile lap from ZwiftInsider.com, “Introduced in Zwift’s May 2021 Yumezi launch, Countryside Tour is sort of a reverse Chain Chomper with some extra flat road at the beginning.” The route basics: Length: 15.8 km (9.8 miles), Elevation: 185 m (607‘), Lead-In: 0 km ( miles). The climb is shown as a Cat 4 on ZwiftInsider.com.

Before the ride I adjusted the tension on the Ultegra 8000 pedals because I really had to twist my feet hard to exit them. They are much better now. I don’t plan on any quick exits like a crash (which never happens in Zwift even when avatars ride through each other).

994 feet of climbing is the most I’ve done in awhile. The last 2 miles were slower than the first time up. The climb is mostly gravel or dirt. Maybe I should’ve changed to a MTB or gravel bike. Since it was a meetup no penalty or losing the pack if I stopped to go to my garage to change.

Looks like the weather forecast says Sunday will be another Zwift ride day after church.

Some top results in Strava, probably because of not riding this route before.

Not Quite Bib The Michelin Man But Getting There

Texbiker.net Posted on February 11, 2022 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 11, 2022

I bundled up for today’s bike ride because I rather sweat that be cold. A new pair of Primal Obsidian thermal leg warmers kept my legs warm along with a long sleeve thermal jersey, shorts, windbreaker jacket, and full finger gloves. I rolled away at 10:39 AM on the Cervelo Caledonia and finished at 1:25 PM. The route went south and east on what I call the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. With the 33.63 miles I’m getting closer to the 100 miles on the Cervelo at 86.3 miles. Along the route I saw two other cyclists. Nice to see other bikers out enjoying the relative warm and sunny February weather.

Road construction got in the way but I was able to ride through or around it. Chilly weather doesn’t hold up road work.

Based on the weather forecast for the next couple of days it looks like I will be riding Zwift inside.

Today’s weather: start 66 (humidity 52%, dew point 48), fair, wind SW 7 mph; finish 72 (humidity 35%, dew point 43), a few clouds, wind W 8 mph.

After riding the Cervelo on three rides I think the ride is slightly softer than my Canyon Endurace. But that could be from lower tire pressure. I’m still working on which gears to ride. On the Canyon I started in the small front chainring and 3rd rear gear. On the Cervelo the same front ring but the 4th cassette gear. That feels lower than the Canyon’s 3rd gear so I shifted to the 5th. As I warm up I advance the rear gears. I can tell the difference but not sure where to settle in.

A tricked-out trike is hauling bikes and turning heads in downtown Houston as BCycle aims for fossil fuel-free fun

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Ian Freeman, e-trike operator, moves a load of bikes Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022 in Houston. BCycle, the city’s bike share program, uses the e-trike, a three wheel pedal-assisted cycle, along with a trailer to move bikes between stations.

Ian Freeman may not have the weight of an automobile behind him, but on this rainy, cold Thursday he has 15 wheels and red, blinking lights.

Sure, only two of the wheels have any power whatsoever, 10 of them are not even touching the pavement and he is unlikely to reach 20 mph as he ferries four Houston BCycle bikes and an e-bike on an e-trike.

Yes, an e-trike. A pedal-assisted three-wheeled cycle originally designed as a modern-day rickshaw for carrying folks to and from special events. Houston …

Driver who killed Houston cyclist could be first charged under Texas’ new Lisa Torry Smith Act, advocates say

Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

Prosecutors will wait weeks to present the case to a Harris County grand jury as the investigation continues.

A man behind the wheel of a Toyota Tundra who hit and killed a 73-year-old cyclist Monday morning in southwest Houston could face a felony charge under a new crosswalk law believed to have never been applied before, advocates said.

The dead cyclist was identified as Chung Ko, a Sharpstown resident who was 10 minutes from his home when he was hit. Houston police have not publicly identified the pickup driver. Ko was pedaling north across Bellaire Boulevard at Osage Street around 10:15 a.m. Monday. Houston police said Ko was "possibly" in the crosswalk when the driver, who was facing north on …
