About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Shawn Bradley’s heartbreaking reminder to watch for bikes

By Rachel Stone | lakewood.advocatemag.com

A driver hit former Dallas Mavericks center Shawn Bradley while he was riding a bike near his Utah home in January 2021.

Injury from the accident caused the 7-foot-6-inch tall athlete to be paralyzed from the chest down.

Sports Illustrated profiled Bradley recently, in a story that gives details of the accident — he swung out to avoid being doored by a parked car and was hit by a Dodge minivan — and his recovery.

The crash didn’t kill him, but it’s likely to shorten his life, the magazine reported. And his size has been a challenge for the hospitals and rehab centers treating him.

Last fall, Bradley worked five days a week at grueling physical therapy at Baylor Scott & White with the goal of moving himself from his chair to his bed and back without assistance. …

… Here’s what the City of Dallas says about driving with bikes:

Bicyclists have legal access to the roadway and must obey stop signs, traffic lights, traffic laws and signs.
Special care must be used near bicyclists because any accident with them will probably result in serious injury.
Automobile drivers should leave safe passing room. If you are not sure you have enough room to pass, don’t.
When turning, allow enough room so the bicyclist is ...

Video: Flour Bluff hike and bike trail bringing attention to Oso Bay Wetland Preserve

Author: Brandon Schaff | www.kiiitv.com

The Flour Bluff Citizens Council is starting off a decade-long project to revitalize an old stretch of bridge, and turn it into a hiking trail through the preserve.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A group of citizens in Flour Bluff have taken on an ambitious project. They hope to build a walking and biking trail that stretches across the Oso Wetland Preserve.

"I want people to come to Flour Bluff and say, ‘Wow, what a gem. How did we miss this by just driving over it to go to Padre Island?’ We want them to stop in and say this is a beautiful place."

That’s Shirley Thornton of the Flour Bluff Citizens Council. Over the last 14 months, she and the rest of the council have been hard at work on community projects around the area. The most …

Surgery Recovery Ride – Watopia Volcano Flat

Texbiker.net Posted on February 5, 2022 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 5, 2022

This is my first ride after Wednesday’s cataract surgery. In the follow up visit I asked the doctor how soon I could ride Zwift. He said as long as I didn’t stand up pedaling on the bike 2 to 3 days. I chose the Watopia Volcano Flat route because it was flat and less than 10 miles. Creating a meetup event I started at 12 PM riding easy trying to keep my BPM below 100 and the watts around 50 to 60. The ride covered 8.34 miles with 164 feet of climbing spread out over the course. At my easy pace the ride took 42:35. Not wanting to bore anyone I didn’t livestream the ride but created a slide show of the screenshots during the ride.

Music I listened to while riding: SiriusXM 70’s on 7 America’s Top 40 from 1-30-1971.

The only previous ride on this route was 12/31/2020. It was about the same distance but faster. My note says the 12/31/2020 ride was the 2nd Zwift ride that day.

Cold weather arrived last Thursday making Zwift the only choice for today’s ride with the temperature in the upper 40’s when I started today. Tomorrow I plan on riding stage 8 Group C in the Tour de Zwift to complete the TdZ all 8 stages.

The RWGPS map exaggerates the climbs

A Texas Hill Country Bike: David Ross’ Cycles d’Autremont Road

By: Alex Roszko | theradavist.com

In this episode of “Where Are They Now?” we catch up with the road bike Hubert D’Autremont fabricated for himself to see what it has been up to over the past several years since its last appearance on The Radavist. We even returned to the same photoshoot location.

If you’re a Radavist veteran, you may have caught its feature when the bike was fully clad in Dura Ace 9000 and finished with Enve and Chris King. It was a stunner, but lived an uneventful life, clocking less than 500mi in its Shimano days before finding its new home with David Ross. …

Long-awaited repairs to M-K-T Bridge set to begin in March

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Rebekah Taylor and Justin Lehr make a detour to White Oak Bayou Trail while having a morning walk with Sebatian, a retired race dog, at the M-K-T Bridge on Dec. 16, 2020, at in Houston. The bridge, which carries the Heights Hike and Bike Trail across the bayou, has been closed since August 2019 due to a fire.

Months of delay in fixing a key trail connection soon may come to an end, with workers set to begin repairs to the M-K-T Bridge next month.

The Houston Parks Board said Friday that Houston and Harris County Flood Control had granted expedited approval of repair plans for the historic bridge.

“On-site construction on the bridge is expected to resume in March, after steel is fabricated for the repairs,” the nonprofit parks board said in a statement, “Construction is estimated to be complete in late Summer 2022, weather permitting.”

"AREA 51" aka Little Walnut Creek Greenbelt E.51st & Springdale

By cmc4130 | austinmountainbiking.com

This long-neglected property (can hardly call it a park yet) got renewed attention a few years ago, when the Pecan Springs/Springdale Neighborhood Association did a lot of advocacy and secured grant funding to get a Master Plan developed. ARR participated in that Master Plan process. As some of you may know, the existing trails in this Greenbelt are really rough–some are hobo trails, some are old motocross/pit-bike trails, a few are old abandoned jeep roads. Austin Parks Foundation funded the new entrance and kiosk to the park off Springdale Road. Neighbors and ARR also worked on a short walking loop up by Springdale, and the neighborhood is actively working with PARD and APF towards a playground up there. The Master Plan (link below) discusses existing social trails and existing MTB uses. I, on behalf of ARR, will be advocating for an …

1/2 A protected bike trail alongside BUS-83 from Mission to Harlingen (about 40 miles) would be the most direct way to connect many of the cities in the #RGV (McAllen, Pharr, San Juan, Alamo, Donna, Weslaco, Mercedes, La Feria). Many people work in a city that neighbors theirs.

— RGV Cycling (@CyclingRGV) February 4, 2022

2/2 Downtowns:
Mission ?? McAllen 6 miles
McAllen ?? Pharr 3 miles
Pharr ?? San Juan 2 miles
San Juan ?? Alamo 2 miles
Alamo ?? Donna 4.5 miles
Donna ?? Weslaco 4 miles
Weslaco ?? Mercedes 5 miles
Mercedes ?? La Feria 5.5 miles
La Feria ?? Harlingen 8 miles
All doable by bike.

One would assume that cycling infrastructure is either a priority or it is not. But I keep on wondering why there are actually a few skimpy bike lanes in #Weslaco, seemingly randomly located. Did somebody actually have some (poorly-implemented) well-meant ideas back in the day?

The Broadway debacle is a blow to safe cycling in San Antonio

by Robert Rivard | sanantonioreport.org

San Antonian J. Bruce Bugg Jr., the state’s top transportation political appointee, issued an upbeat statement about Wednesday’s sit-downs with local officials, days after the Jan. 27 decision by the Texas Transportation Commission to abruptly upend the Broadway project.

But the message can’t dress up a TTC action that represents a big setback for both San Antonio and Alamo Heights, as well as the cycling community, pedestrians and all who share a vision for safer streets in San Antonio.

“Two items emerged from the discussions,” Bugg said Wednesday. “First, city leaders acknowledged that Broadway is, in fact, owned by the state of Texas. Second, I am asking TxDOT …

Cyclists Hosted by Farmer Visit Stewart’s Food Store in Olney

By: Ronni Walker | www.olneyenterprise.com

You may have noticed two cyclists traveling through Olney Thursday, Jan. 27. However, if you were near or at Stewart’s Food Store that morning, you would have had an opportunity to meet two of the most intriguing people who decided to quit their jobs and explore the world on bicycles. This exploration has become Tobi and Louisa’s life purpose that they call Chains and Chords.

“We have wanted to travel for a long time, and then we decided that cycling is a nice way to travel and explore the world,” Louisa said.

A world tour by automobile is an intimating thought for some. Can you imagine the motivation required to travel the world on your bike? According to Space.com, the distance across the globe is 24,901 miles. Tobi and Louisa started in …

Houston has a plan for making 11th Street safer by reducing vehicle lanes to add space for cyclists

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Traffic moves along 11th Street near Nicholson where the Heights Hike and Bike Trails crosses 11th Street shown Monday, Jan. 31, 2022 in Houston. Officials plan to rebuild 11th with one vehicle lane in each direction and a median to improve safety crossing the street.

A main thoroughfare through Houston’s Heights is the latest street where city officials are preparing for fewer car lanes, in an effort to consider more ways that people get around.

The plan by the city’s planning and public works departments is to transform 11th Street from two vehicle lanes in each direction to one, with bike lanes and occasional turn lanes.

The changes, which city officials argue will not severely impact drivers but will provide huge safety benefits, come as many communities struggle to …

Spoiler alert: most of the business owners on 11th are more concerned about construction than they are the design. In fact, most support the redesign. Because it's a lot easier to notice and stop at a business when you're traveling 5-10 mph than when you're traveling 35-40 mph.
