About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Biking for a cure

By Jack Corrales | www.thebatt.com

On Jan. 21, the Texas MS, 150 organization had a ribbon cutting for their annual bike race on April 30 and May 1, commemorating the event’s new finish line on Kyle Field.

College Station mayor Karl Mooney said it was nice to see the event happening this year to support individuals with multiple sclerosis, or MS, especially with the impact of COVID-19 in the past two years.

“[Multiple sclerosis is a] disease that affects almost 200,000 people in the United States alone, and [for] some folks they might carry the symptoms and not really be overly affected by it but for some it can be so debilitating,” Mooney said.

It’s not uncommon to know someone who has suffered from MS in some form, Mooney said.

“By being here and by participating in this, we can …

Stage 4 Tour de Zwift Group B, Makuri Islands Chain Chomper Romping Up Climbs

Texbiker.net Posted on January 22, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 22, 2022

Today I rode another route in stage 4 of the Tour de Zwift but this time in Group B. The ride moved to the Makuri Islands on the Chain Chomper. The distance covered 10.02 miles including a 1.5 mile lead-in. The chomper part came from climbing 617 feet. Until the 5 mile marker the climbing was modest but after that it kicked in. Climbing and dust combined to make for a dusty ride (virtual dust). I changed from my MTB to the Cannondale in my garage. I need to see if I can buy a gravel bike. This was my first time on the Chain Chomper though I think I’ve been on parts of it on other routes. Group B is quick but I rode with a group though the group changed along the way. 734 riders registered but I didn’t see that many on the nearby riders list which topped out at 699. The climbing hit 13% for a short time with several 10% and 11% places. I shifted down to lower gears for those.

Zwiftpower.com showed 334 in Group B with me at 297. Group A had 507, Group C 181, and Group D 52. Overall total 1,074.

1-22-2022 Stage 4 TdZ Group B Zwiftpower Ranking

Zwiftinsider.com describes the route, “This route breaks up nicely into 5 sections of roughly equal length: the flat start, the Castle KOM, the Temple KOM, the Temple KOM descent, and the paved descent.”

Strava results: PR on Temple KOM from Castle Side (10:52) and PR on Castle KOM (7:21).

First phase of South Lamar bike lanes delayed nearly two years

by Jonathan Lee | /www.austinmonitor.com

Work on a major face-lift to South Lamar Boulevard between Riverside Drive and Barton Springs Road was supposed to have been well underway by now, but as those who frequent the stretch know, not much has changed.

That’s because the “road diet” project, which will remove one lane each way to add protected bike lanes and wider sidewalks, has been delayed until at least late fall or early winter of this year – nearly two years later than planned – the Corridor Program Office told the Austin Monitor this week. “It is not uncommon for large-scale infrastructure improvement projects, such as the Corridor Construction Program, to encounter construction delays,” spokesperson Dea Crichton said.

The office is working on an updated construction timeline; Crichton said work could now happen alongside …

Major bike lane connection in Houston’s Third Ward underway

Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

A crucial addition to Houston’s bike lane network in the Third Ward is inching closer to a reality.

Planning and Development Department officials will host a virtual meeting with community members to iron out how and where to install bike lanes along Blodgett and Cleburne streets, which will create an east-west bike route in Third Ward that currently doesn’t exist. The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 3 via Microsoft Teams.

An east-west bike lane will bridge the gap between the destinations in the …

Group A Tour de Zwift Stage 4 Watopia Serpentine 8, I Managed To Hang With Others

Texbiker.net Posted on January 21, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 21, 2022

It was still chilly outside but inside it was nice and toasty. Stage 4 of the Tour de Zwift was live and I picked the 12 PM start time. Group C route was 10 miles and I wanted to ride longer than that so I chose Group A. The route for Group A was Watopia Serpentine 8, 16.6 miles including the lead-in with a bunch of climbing (for me anyway) at 784 feet. For a change the ride description mileage agreed with what I actually rode. As the starting countdown hit 0 I saw 2190 riders in the data block on the right. I was nowhere near the front and after the lead-in I settled into the 1890 to 1898 spots. Not bad considering it was Group A which rarely ride with because they are much faster than me. Watching the comments before the ride I saw someone mention the route was better suited for gravel bikes than road or MTB. I don’t have a gravel bike in my garage so I changed to the MTB in my garage. I don’t know if it made a difference but there many sections of dirt and dust.

Looking at the results at ZwiftPower.com in Group A I finished at 1170 out of 1203. Group B showed 483 riders, Group C 300, and Group D (women only) 47. I don’t know if only people with ZwiftPower.com logins are counted or everyone.

ZwiftPower.com Stage 4 TdZ results

I previously rode the Serpentine 8 route 4 times and today was number 5. Below is a comparison of the 5.

All bike rides on Zwift Watopia Serpentine 8 route to date

Only 7 segments in Strava for the Serpentine 8. I set a record on 6 of them.

  • PR on Serpentine 8 (51:43)
  • PR on Mayan Bridge Eastbound (3:47)
  • PR on Serpentine 8 Lead-In (12:30)
  • PR on Mayan Bridge Westbound (3:50)

I included the RWGPS map because the climbs look more realistic than Strava’s.
