About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Corsicana teacher awarded grant for student bikes

www.corsicanadailysun.com

Kicking off the new year with a loud Tiger Roar, Corsicana Middle School is already claiming 2022 as a year of opportunities. Outdoor education teacher David Richardson took that catchphrase to heart when he applied for the Riding for Focus Grant.

He was informed via email that CMS is a Riding for Focus grantee.

“I applied for the Outride grant to provide another avenue for students to get outside and experience outdoor activities,” Richardson said. “Outdoor Education at …

Bike Lanes in Houston Are a Joke

Jeff Balke | www.houstonpress.com

A car drives in the designated bike lane along Antoine Drive in northwest Houston. Photo by Jeff Balke

Houston is a car city. It always has been and it likely always will be. The massive size alone in all directions makes planning for and building alternate forms of transportation nearly impossible due to the cost and infrastructure needs. But, for all the complaints you’ll hear from pedestrians and cyclists about dealing with dangerous drivers, the city has committed to building a better and more walkable city, if not in the macro, certainly in the micro.

That means wider bicycle lanes, better sidewalks and more off-street hike and …

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — The Wichita Falls community is rallying behind a beloved resident in an effort to replace his only form of transportation.

Enjoyed The Fleeting Warm Weather Biking Atascocita – Walden – Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on January 14, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 14, 2022

I didn’t need to wait quite as much as yesterday for the temperature to get to 70 for today’s bike ride. Unfortunately tomorrow’s forecast says no 70 degrees for a few days. The wind will be strong and chilly tomorrow. I will be inside looking for Zwift riding events. Maybe stage 2 of the Tour de Zwift?

Today’s bike ride began at 11:14 AM and finished at 1:55 PM. I rode my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route going 33.53 miles. This put me slightly ahead of the pace I need to reach my 300 mile goal for January. But I won’t be ahead for long thanks to the chilly weather coming tomorrow.

I saw another cyclist on Pines Place Drive in Pines of Atascocita. I’ve seen him before in almost the same spot.

I was wondering how the construction was going on FM 2100 since my last last ride there December 16th. I rode on the sidewalk parallel to the southbound lanes to the railroad tracks in Huffman. It was difficult getting from the end of the sidewalk at the tracks over to the northbound lanes. I rode on the concrete railroad base to the middle where the lane is blocked while the construction pours the center lanes. The tricky part was getting over the rails because there wasn’t much room to get perpendicular to the tracks to avoid the slots. I rode very slowly and almost got the rear tire in the slot. Thankfully the northbound traffic was stopped and let me move to the far lane. I may need to move to the northbound sidewalk before getting to the railroad tracks next time.

Weather conditions: start 70 ( humidity 43%, dew point 46), partly cloudy, wind SW 5 mph; finish 74 (humidity 35%, dew point 44), a few clouds, wind SW 9 mph. As I point out in the video, no leg warmers needed today. I did wear shorts, a long sleeve heavy jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. I was comfortable once my legs got warmed up from pedaling and the sun.

Weather Turns Warmer, New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 13, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 13, 2022

The weather turned warmer just like the forecast said it would so I grabbed my Lynskey R300 bike and went for a bike ride. Wheels down at 11:27 AM. The ride followed my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route covering 37.38 miles. I am behind on the pace I need to reach my 300 mile goal for January but today’s mile narrowed the gap to 18 miles, 112 miles so far versus 130 miles to be on pace. If the weather forecast holds for Friday (tomorrow) I should get ahead. But Saturday a cold front arrives and I will be Zwifting again. The cold will hang around through Monday.

So far I have rode each day of January, 4 days on the road and 9 days using Zwift.

The weather conditions for today’s bike ride: start 65 (humidity 56%, dew point 48), a few clouds, wind W 7 mph; finish 70 (humidity 41%, dew point 45), a few clouds, wind variable 5 mph. I dressed warmly with shorts, leg warmers, a long sleeve thermal jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. It was cool for the first miles but the sun warmed me up. I probably could’ve substituted a regular long sleeve jersey and been comfortable once I warmed up.

I saw another cyclist at the beginning of the ride but he went another direction when I turned onto a side street.
