About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Not The Distance I Expected; Zwift Makuri Islands Kappa Quest Reverse

Texbiker.net Posted on January 12, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 12, 2022
https://youtu.be/1UqPyxpW6ec

Wednesday’s bike ride was in the virtual Zwift world of Neokyo. I looked at the upcoming events and the ones around the time I wanted to start were on routes I rode several times before. So, I created a Zwift meetup ride starting at 12:45 PM on the Makuri Islands Kappa Quest Reverse route. This was the first time on this route. I looked the route up on ZwiftInsider.com to see what the route looked like. The information there I think is for the Kappa Quest and the Reverse version. The distance and lead-in on ZwiftInsider.com did not match what I rode, 6.32 miles and 509 feet of climbing. According to ZwiftInsider.com I should’ve rode 8.8 miles plus a 3.2 mile lead-in. The Zwift companion app showed the distance at 6.3 miles but no information on how much climbing.

I wasn’t alone on the route with other Zwifters passing but mostly going the opposite direction.

The climbing begins not too far from the start. A few 10% places but usually in the single digits. I’m not sure if a gravel bike would’ve done better. I was on a road bike. I saw a few riders on MTB’s. The dust wasn’t too bad compared to some courses I rode in Zwift.

At the start the temperature outside was in the mid 50’s. It’s January and I expect cool weather. The next 2 days (Thursday and Friday) should be in the low 70’s and I will ride outside. I need road miles to reach my goal for the month. Saturday another front arrives and i will be back to Zwift.

Cyclist deaths on the rise in Harris County after grim 2021

Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

Halfway into its self-imposed deadline to build out 1,800 miles of bike lanes by 2027, the city of Houston is only a third of the way done.

Family members of Joel Middaugh, a Houston father and art model, watch as Steve and Melissa Sims install a ghost bike is installed in the 2800 block of West Little York Road, near the site where Middaugh died, on Dec. 12, 2021.

The end of 2021 marked the deadliest year in the last decade for cyclists hit by drivers on roads in Harris County, despite a pointed effort from Houston and its group of partners to make the Bayou City more friendly for those who pedal.

Drivers in Harris County reportedly struck cyclists 557 times in 2021, killing 23 riders. Of those deaths, 11 were within the city of Houston, nine were in unincorporated Harris County and two were in Pasadena. That’s more than …

Man bikes solo from coast to coast to raise awareness for colon cancer

Colon Cancer Coalition | www.bakersfield.com

Minneapolis, Jan. 11, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — On Tues., Nov. 30, Michigan photojournalist Dave Klein embarked on a 3,205 mile solo cycling journey to raise awareness and funds for the Colon Cancer Coalition. He rides unsupported from Los Angeles to St. Augustine, Fla. on two wheels, in honor of a close family friend with a stage IV diagnosis. “I’ve always wanted to ride a bicycle cross-country,” Klein remarks warmly. “[This year, I thought] why not turn it into a mission with a purpose?” Klein, an avid cyclist, has been planning the trip for 18 months after a delayed launch due to COVID restrictions along the route. Now more than 1,600 miles into his journey, Klein has ridden through the deserts of Arizona, the Rocky Mountains in New Mexico, and along miles of icy highways aided by truck drivers and random passersby. He is currently battling windy stretches of Texas with nothing but acres of ranch land, long horn cattle and the hospitality of the ranchers he befriends along the way. “I’m looking forward to who I am going to meet,” Klein reported before the ride began. “This is one of the most enriching opportunities to relate with people one-on-one.” …

Zwift Riding With The HERD on Watopia Two Bridges Loop

Texbiker.net Posted on January 11, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 11, 2022

Another chilly day outside so I looked for a Zwift ride. (55 degrees when I started today) I thought stage 2 of the tour de Zwift would be one of the events but I only found stage 1 which I rode yesterday. The HERD Tuesday Social Ride looked good so I signed up. The 11:55 AM start rolled around and I thought I had all the technical parts connected to Zwift but my cadence sensor was not connected. Yesterday I moved the cadence sensor from the left crank arm because my shoe was rubbing on it. The spot was my left shoe but I did not orient it in the right direction. The ride started when I figured this out so I repositioned the sensor on my left shoe and all was good. It didn’t show up in the Zwift companion app but it did on my computer. With the dealy I missed several minutes and rode alone until the front flyers lapped me.

I rode the Watopia Two Bridges Loop once before on 12/31/2020 but only one lap. According my notes I was trying a method to connect two routes in one ride. I don’t think it worked. Today’s ride was 60 minutes rather than distance based. ZwiftInsider.com describes the course, “Introduced in Zwift’s December 2020 update, Two Bridges Loop is the first route to use the new KOM Bypass – a short stretch of road which connects the Hilly KOM forward with the Hilly KOM reverse approximately halfway up each climb, effectively shortcutting both KOM segments. This route is simply an abbreviated version of the event-only Hilly Route Reverse, since we remove 2.1km of road and 20m of elevation gain by taking the KOM bypass.” There were a couple of short 10% climbs to test my legs. My left knee is still a little sore though after I “popped” it this morning the soreness decreased a lot. I think the flyers lapped me at least 3 times while I rode 14.7 miles and climbed 876 feet during my ride. I did score some Strava personal records thought.
