About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Excruciation Quiz

Jane Stricker | www.strava.com

Tough race. Wet, slick conditions, but its always fun to race warda, bcr.

Excruciation Exam – Single Speed – first of two

Frank Cano | www.strava.com

It wasn’t pretty…. Single speed at a race that mixes punch MTB climbs and lots of gravel and asphalt…. 95% not in the right gear, ever.

Warda full lap was first. Kept pacing on target and road all the climbs. Went down in the only muddy spot on the whole course when my front tire slipped out. Finished up and got on the road and joined a group of 4, 2 50+ and 1 60+.

Burned a lot of matches trying to hang on to geared guys on the way over. Every time the speed got over 20, it was spin@130-coast-spin@130-coast. I’d put my dropper on and on the downhills would drop it and tuck in super tight and pass them up. That lasted 10mi before I pulled the plug and dropped back.

At RHR, much of the route was all loose bumpy fresh cut trail. Zero flow. With the fog, the roots and rocks were slippery and I spun out on several climbs and had to walk.

Soloed the ride back for a time of 4:47.

Haven’t figured out yet if this is epic or epicly dumb. For certain though that Ive given my stand and stomp and sit and spin training a boost!

Actually, I’ve Bicycled About 45,000 Miles in 17 Years

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

The week began slowly. I only managed to average about 12 miles a day when I’m meant to do 15. For 2022, I haven’t set any new goals or made any New Years resolutions. I’m just sort of coasting on auto-pilot from last year. After 5,555.55 miles in 2021, and 6,666.66 in 2020, and riding every day for over 800 days in a row, I have now passed 32,000 miles in just over six years on Strava*. (I started in very late December 2015 and it took five days of 2022 to hit that number, so call it six years and two weeks). That got me to thinking about what I did pre-Strava. The actual total mileage I estimate is much higher. Actually, I’ve bicycled about 45,000 miles in 17 years. (As for whatever …

Delayed By Electricity Outage and Rain, Zwifting Makuri Islands Suki’s Playground

Texbiker.net Posted on January 8, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 8, 2022

Fog and mist when I got up this morning. I knew I wouldn’t ride early because I volunteered to work an estate sale from 9 to 11. While I was working I got a text message that the electricity was off at my home. Maybe it would be fixed by the time I got back home. In the meantime rain moved in most likely dooming road biking today. I got home around 11:30 and the electricity was still off. Zwifting was not possible. Rather than sit around waiting for the electricity to come back on I ran some errands. When I returned home I pressed the garage door opener button and the door went up. Electricity was back on.

It took awhile to get my computer up and running for some reason. Windows 10 wanted to make some changes. I got the computer fixed. Then I checked the Zwift Companion app to see if there were any interesting events. I didn’t see any so I decided to create a meetup with me and a random person who follows me. I went to the worlds and chose Makuri Islands. Suki’s Playground caught my attention because the previous attempt on the route was riddled with technical problems. Rather than distance I set the meetup for 45 minutes starting at 2:30 PM. It’s been some time since I created a meetup but it went well. As I waited to start another person moved beside me but it wasn’t the person I invited. No problem.

Suki’s Playground covers 11.5 miles with no lead-in. Each lap climbs 492 feet. ZwiftInsider.com has more details. With 45 minutes I rode 13.29 miles and climbed 518 feet. Some of the climbs were steep slowing me to single digit speeds but I still passed a few riders and some passed me. My legs felt good. Yesterday I aired up the tires on my Blue Norcross AL bike that I use with my Wahoo Kickr Snap trainer. Not sure if that impacted my ride. I also aired up the tires on my other bikes.

I recorded a personal record in Strava, PR on Farmland Flats CW (7:26). No technical problems on the ride and livestream today.

44 Degrees Outside Heating Me Up Zwifting Watopia Tempus Fugit With ZHCC

Texbiker.net Posted on January 7, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 7, 2022

The weather forecast was right for today. When I started today’s Zwift ride at 12;30 PM it was 44 degrees outside. Not for my biking. I found the ZHCC Flat Friday ride on Zwift. The route was the Watopia Tempus Fugit for 60 minutes. The fence was up for the right and I stayed behind it most of the time but for the last 10 minutes or so I tried to stay with a group and we went beyond the fence. Looking back this was the 3rd time biking this route. Today’s 20.53 miles was the middle distance of the 3. The ride was fast, by my standards anyway, averaging 20.1 mph with a max of 25.9 mph. Not too bad for someone my age.

The YouTube live stream reported an error about 15 minutes into the ride, not enough data being received. Fortunately I recorded the ride as well. The video above is the ride less about 40 seconds at the beginning.

Since it was awhile since my last ride on Tempus Fugit I looked it up on ZwiftInsider.com to see what I signed up for. The basics: 10.7 miles long plus a 1.5 mile lead-in with 52 feet of climbing per lap. From ZwiftInsider.com, ““Tempus Fugit” is Latin for “time flees (or flies)”, and this is certainly a flat, fast route. Released as part of Zwift’s Fuego Flats desert expansion, it is designed as an out and back TT race course, with the lead-in from the desert start pens making the course come in right around 20km in length for one lap.”

Watopia Tempus Fugit route map

I scored two personal records on Strava; 2nd fastest time on Tempus Fugit (31:38) and 3rd fastest time on Fuego Flats Reverse Sprint (13:12).
