About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

I Can’t Drive 5,555.55 Miles, but I Bicycled Them! (6,056 Total with Walking in 2021)

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

It’s year six in the books, for those keeping count of both blog and bodacious bike riding (and four years of basically daily bipedaling). If you recall, 2020 was remarkable globally of course because of THE KILLER VIRUS, but it was memorable for me personally. I really got after it and as a result last year’s post was titled A Devil of a Year: 6,666.66 Miles Bicycled in 2020 (7,278 Total with Walking)! So yes, I biked every day all year (one less due to leap year) — again — but for 1,111.11 miles less. That was intentional since 18.21 miles a …

Please be aware of a temporary closure on the northside Buffalo Bayou trail at Smith and Franklin Streets for repairs by Houston Public Works. The closure is estimated to last through the end of January. pic.twitter.com/KbWDpMqSmu

Technical Gremlins Wreaked Havoc Zwifting Makuri Islands Suki’s Playground

Texbiker.net Posted on January 4, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 4, 2022

I should have expected problems before starting today’s Zwift bike ride. Yesterday I reset my desktop computer from Windows 11 to Windows 10. In order to do that I had to erase all of my data. That meant about 6 hours or installing and recovering programs and data. I thought I had Zwift installed and working but when I started Zwift it got hung up loading and while that was happening the No Limits Cycling club ride on Makuri Islands Suki’s Playground started without me. In addition to Zwift I configured OBS Studio to livestream to YouTube but I missed an audio setting and recorded the room sounds rather than the Zwift sounds. I got that fixed now but I suspect if I were to post the video I would get copyright notices because of the background music.

With all of the problems I managed to ride 11.02 miles and climb 440 feet on the route. The ride plan was 60 minutes long but I only rode 41:41 and actual moving time is less than that as I dealt with the issues. Suki’s Playground is in the latest world Makuri Islands. One lap is 15.0 miles with 492 feet of climbing. I didn’t ride the full lap but most of the climbing. According to ZwiftInsider.com the name comes from “Suki’s Playground is a rather flat figure 8 named in memory of Zwift Senior Game Designer Richard Yeh’s dog Suki, who passed while Richard was developing routes for the Yumezi map. “I adopted Suki when she was only 11 weeks old, and we had a wonderful 11 years together,” says Richard. “She passed away suddenly last September, but her spirit is always still with me. She loved to run and do zoomies when she got excited. The route was initially called ‘Zoomies for Suki’, but we changed it to ‘Suki’s Playground.’”

I rode Zwift because the outside temperature at the 1 PM start was below 60. I’m glad I rode Zwift to iron out the problems. Tomorrow it will be in the 70’s and I will ride outside. But sometime Thursday another cold front will arrive and I will be back on Zwift for several days. Below is the Strava data for what I did ride.

Local bike box rentals

By Barry | austinmountainbiking.com

aka THANKS TREK!

Who is renting out good bike boxes these days? I didn’t see anything on Peddler’s, Velorangutan nor Cycle Progression’s site.

BSS used to rent great and modern bike boxes for $10 a day. Easy-peasy. Trek offers no such thing…but they’ll give me a couple of cardboard boxes…no thanks. I have those. Luckily MJs has plenty of bike boxes for $10 a day! It’s those old Thule hard cases, so it’ll work great for your road bike, or your 2000’s geo 26er mountain bike. I remember my 2006 Giant Reign barely fitting in it, so there’s …

Zwift Watopia Flat Route, Chilly Outside

Texbiker.net Posted on January 3, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 3, 2022

Another chilly day and I rode indoors on Zwift. I had a small time window so I chose the Watopia Flat Route, This route is 6.4 miles with a .3 mile lead-in. Climbing was a modest 177 ft per lap. I rode 9.04 miles to get at least 1% of my Zwift goal for the year of 800 miles. Previously I rode the route in reverse but not in this direction.

ZwiftInsider.com describes the route, “The Watopia “Flat Route” was added when Watopia’s Ocean Boulevard came online in late December 2015. It includes the undersea tunnel and marina sections, plus the back half of the original Hilly Route.”

I set a new personal record according to Strava, PR on The Esses (Zwift Insider verified) (2:58).
