About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Zwift Watopia Beach Island Loop

Texbiker.net Posted on January 2, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 2, 2022

No outside bike ride today. When I got up this morning the wind was blowing strong and it was 31 degrees. By the time I left for church it went up a couple of degrees. By the time I got back from church it was 37 degrees. This was way below my 60 degree threshold. Time to look for an event in Zwift.

As the YouTube video title says the Watopia Beach Island Loop with the WMZ cycling group fit the time and distance. The event was for 60 minutes with each lap 8 miles long with about 144 feet of climbing per lap. As a recovery ride I thought most riders would be holding close to the 1.5 to 2.0 w/kg group D pace. I kept with the group for awhile but with no fence the flyers went off the front. I rode with a couple of others off and on. sometimes I would ride ahead on the hills and they would catch and pass on the downhills.

This was a good Zwift start for 2022. Three personal records in Strava. PR on Beach Island Loop (24:10), PR on Dirty Sorpresa Climb (Zwift Insider verified) (1:45), and 2nd fastest time on Dirty Sorpresa Climb (Zwift Insider verified) (2:06).

The Last Bike Ride (of 2021): Rolling with Rhodney

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

The year began like it ended, with your humble correspondent throwing a leg over the top tube and pedaling. Neither far nor fast, but flat. Nothing remarkable, save for the fact that I have this platform from which to remark about it. After all, bicycling is a relatively simple act that hundreds of millions of people around the world do. Many much “better” than I. But as someone reminded me, everyone has their story, and here I’ve tried to tell mine, for what it’s worth. Everyone also has obstacles in their life, be they genetic, disability or health-related, environmental, social, economic, or political, and there are many other things that make it “hard”. I try not to focus on these challenges, although I do …

I’ve always liked challenges like the #festive500. I’m a lazy shit and stuff like this gives me reasons to ride. It was also the first year my son, Santiago, was interested in participating. He kind of hit his limit around 300 km in, which is wayyy more than I was expecting. He finished around 350km. Pretty good for a 12 year old on a hard tail. “I’ll finish it next year”

One More Warm Bike Ride To Start 2022

Texbiker.net Posted on January 1, 2022 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 1, 2022

The unusual weather remained for today’s bike ride but later tonight it will end. I wanted to get the first bike ride of the new year under my wheels and miles towards my goal for the month. My goal is 300 road miles. Wheels down at 9:44 AM under an overcast sky and 8 mph wind. Since it is Saturday I chose the “Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden” route hoping to see some other cyclists. I saw 2 on W. Lake Houston Parkway but maybe I was too late to see others or maybe they rode a different route.

I rode my Canyon Endurace bike. As the ride progressed I sensed the wind was increasing and when I finished the ride at 12:11 PM and looked at the weather my senses were right. It was from the SW at 14 mph with 21 mph gusts. No wonder I had to pedal so hard getting to FM 2100. It was 78 at the start and 80 when I finished. I probably overdressed with shorts, a long sleeve jersey and a short sleeve jersey. It didn’t seem too hot but the wind may have blown away my heat.

Rather than ride north on FM 2100 I made a u-turn and retraced my route until I was on the west side of Lake Houston. There I rode south into Walden fighting the headwind. Making the turn to the north on Pinehurst Trail Drive the wind became more of a tailwind all the way back to Kingwood.

Early in the ride a mist fell on me but I figured it would go away. There were some wet streets but nothing to cause a problem. I will wipe the Canyon off after the ride. The chain is starting squeak a little so it’s time to wax it again. I have new wax this time.

I suspect the next 2 days will be Zwift days until it warms up on Tuesday.
