About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

End 2021 Biking Kingwood Streets and San Jacinto Bayou Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on December 31, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 31, 2021

The last bike ride of 2021 began at 10:44 AM. I wasn’t going on a long bike ride because this afternoon at 2:30 PM the University of Cincinnati Bearcats play football and I didn’t want to be late. The route covered some Kingwood streets, greenbelt trails and the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway for a total of 19.69 miles, longer than I guessed it would be. With the football game I wore my UC Bearcats cycling jersey complementing red trimmed shorts and the Canyon Endurace bike.

December weather continued to be warm making for a great bike ride. I finished at 12:24 PM with the temperature at 80. The wind increased a couple of mph from the start but not really a problem. Weather summary: start 77 (humidity 83%, dew point 71), mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph; finish 80 (humidity 74%, dew point 71), mostly cloudy, wind SW 9 mph.

It has been a great month and year though I missed a week of biking this month due to sickness. Below are summaries of the month and year.

  • 12-31-2021 December Bike Rides Summary
    12-31-2021 December Bike Rides Summary
  • 12-31-2021 SportTracks Year Bike Rides Summary
12-31-2021 SportTracks Year Bike Rides Summary

I exceeded all of my goals for months and the year except for Zwift miles where I fell 49 miles short. The reason Zwift miles fell short was all of the warm December weather and biking outside rather than bad weather and indoors. 298 rides leaves 67 days not riding. The 15 non-mileage workouts are maintenance entries into SportTracks.

One statistic I recorded was the bike shorts I wore on each ride. The reason I started recording this was the Bellwether Endurance Gel shorts didn’t seem to last and I wanted to keep track of usage to see if I was right. I made a change about mid year to Primal Prisma shorts which seem to be more durable and comfortable. I use 5 pairs of Prisma shorts. The breakdown by pair:

  • Primal Obsidian Prisma Shorts 6-21-2021 29 rides
  • Primal Pink Floyd Prisma shorts 6-4-2021 30 rides
  • Primal Ebony Men’s Red Prisma Shorts 12-14-2019 39 rides
  • Primal Prisma Ebony Red Shorts 7-4-2021 30 rides
  • Primal Obsidian Prisma Shorts 8-16-2021 20 rides

Miles by bike: Canyon Endurace start of the year 20199 miles, end of year 25588 miles. Lynskey R300 start of the year 3020 miles, end of the year 6349 miles. I use the Blue Norcross AL for Zwift for 751 miles.

A celebration on two wheels: The Texas Tour – Texas is big, your heart is bigger

By JUDY BLUESTEIN LEVIN | jhvonline.com

There is still time for cyclists to join the Texas Tour, riding across the Texas Hill Country, Feb. 28, benefitting Mesivta of Houston, a boy’s yeshiva high school. The tour will begin in College Station at the Hilton Conference Center, cross the prairies and lakes region of Central Texas and then finish at the edge of Texas’ beautiful Hill Country, along the bike paths of Austin’s metropolitan parks.

This is the second year of the ride, which was the brainchild of Mesivta board member, Andy Serotta. When Serotta, an avid cyclist, was in a bad biking accident a year-and-a-half ago, just before an August charity ride, he was determined to ride again. And, he didn’t …

Frisco releases new interactive ‘story map’ showcasing top hike-and-bike trails

By Matt Payne | communityimpact.com

Residents of Frisco and the general public have a new tool at their disposal to discover popular hike-and-bike trails in the city.

The new Frisco Trails Story Map was featured in a Dec. 30 installment of the city’s “Progress in Motion” video series. The map, which uses the city’s geographic information system technology, highlights the top 10 trails in Frisco. Specifics on several walking loops and a link to the city’s complete Hike and Bike Master Plan are also available.

Chris Shuma, a GIS analyst for the city, said the map came from collaboration between the IT, parks and recreation, and engineering departments. Their goal, he said, was to …

Bicycles and Bibles

By Scott McLendon | www.theexaminer.com

Her mother was taken by the COVID-19 pandemic just two months ago, but a Beaumont 5-year-old told her 23-year-old sister/soon-to-be adopted mom that Christmas 2021 was the best she’s ever had – all thanks to the Reaud Charitable Foundation’s annual Bicycles and Bibles event.

LeAnne was a year old when Wayne A. Reaud gave away 125 bikes at the Beaumont Civic Center ahead of Christmas 1999. As she grew, so too did Bicycles and Bibles’ giving, from 125 bikes and Bibles to 1,000 bikes, Bibles and other gifts each year. And when she became an impromptu mother, barely having the wherewithal to take on parental responsibilities accompanying a 5-year-old, let alone providing Christmas for the child, Bicycles and Bibles was there to fulfill its mission: showing compassion and spreading blessings.

Thanks to Bicycles and Bibles, LeAnne and her boyfriend were able to give the little girl a bike and Bible, along with a sackful of gifts. Without the philanthropic actions of families like the Reauds in Beaumont, some of …

Road to Hotter’N Hell

by Fun Bikin’ Enterprises | www.bikereg.com

Are You Ready for a BAG?

Sometimes you need a Big Awesome Goal to get motivated – and this series fits the bill. The Hotter’N Hell is loaded with challenges – Heat and Wind being the biggest challenges – then they add a few hills in just the right places – and 20+ miles of headwind in the last miles of the 100 mile route. Through the years I have noticed that the people who handle these challenges the best are the people who are out cycling in area rides leading up to the HHH. This little secret motivated me to put together a ride series that would help you get ready for the BIG ride in Wichita Falls.

The Road to Hotter’N Hell is a bundle of 4 small community bike rides that are in the final weeks leading up to the Hotter’N Hell. Each ride in our series features challenging routes and a variety of distances blended with Texas Hospitality. We’ve ridden these rides for decades and know that they are all committed to providing an excellent ride experience. Here’s how it works.

When you register for the RTHH you …

Weather Too Good To Ride Indoors

Texbiker.net Posted on December 30, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 30, 2021

The weather was too good to ride Zwift indoors today. Rolling away at 10:57 AM on the Lynskey R300 bike I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I wondered if the FM 2100 construction had changed during my absence. By the 1:42 PM finish I rode 33.56 miles. I felt good and the wind was friendly with my still recovering legs.

On Pines Place Drive another cyclist passed me riding the opposite direction. Nice to know I wasn’t the only cyclist enjoying the warm December weather. Later on Fairlake Lane a group of cyclists were in the parking lot. One cyclist was at the entrance and we exchanged hi’s. After I passed he rode to the north towards FM 1960. I think the others had finished their ride.

At FM 2100 I saw the south bound lanes were open. I needed to decide how I would ride to FM 1960. I chose the sidewalk on the west side of the road. Portions of it were covered with dirt but not mud so I rode over it. At the entrance to Richard Automation it looked like the sidewalk was either not finished or covered in dirt. I rode to the center of FM 2100 and waited for an opening in the traffic to ride to the sidewalk. Previously the sidewalk on the east side had lots of overgrowth but today it was clear. North of the church the sidewalk ended and I moved to the main lane. A big break in the traffic allowed me to get to the railroad crossing without any problem. In the middle of the road an excavator dug up the old asphalt in preparation for concrete. Not sure how long that will take.

The light wind provided a headwind at times but not too strong. The ride back to Kingwood generally had a tailwind or side wind. Crossing Lake Houston was not too hard with the wind from my left and broken up by passing traffic.

Weather summary: start 79 (humidity 77%, dew point 71), partly cloudy, wind S 5 mph; finish 80 (humidity 69%, dew point 69), partly cloudy, wind N 0 mph.
