About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Change Of Plan, Two Dog Sprints = Adrenaline Spike

Texbiker.net Posted on December 17, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 17, 2021

When I left home on today’s bike ride I didn’t plan on a route change or two dog sprints but they happened. It all began at 10:57 AM as I rode away on the Lynskey R300 bike. I planned on riding north to Community Drive, loop back on the US59 service road south, through Valley Ranch. At FM 1314 turn right and ride to Sorters Road then make a u-turn back to Old Sorters Road. From there I would ride the typical streets in Oakhurst and Kings Manor before returning to Kingwood. But on Valley Ranch Parkway I decided to alter the route. The new route didn’t turn onto FM 1315, continued south through Briar Tree, Oakhurst, and onto Kingwood Place Drive south. From there I moved to the US59 south bound frontage road over US59 and ride through Forest Cove. I’m not sure why I made the change but maybe it was to avoid the headwind riding SE on FM 1314 from Sorters Road and a different combination of roads. After finishing the ride at 1:26 PM I checked my SportTracks activities for rides on this route and didn’t find any. A new route has been born.

The original route would’ve been around 27 miles but the actual route came in at 29.64 miles. My week total now stands at 150.3 miles, 17.82 miles of that is from Zwift. It looks like I could finish the week with 2 more rides in Zwift based on the weather forecast for Saturday and Sunday.

In the video details I detail the dog sprints. It’s been a few weeks since I had one. They spike the adrenaline especially when I’m riding and daydreaming. Fortunately my legs were up to sprinting on short notice.

More wind today but no high gusts to contend with. Unusual temperature also continued but that will end tomorrow. I dressed like it was a summer day. I think this is 5 days in a row with high in the 80’s. Not a typical December but I’ll take it. Weather at the start and finish: start 76 (humidity 86%, dew point 71), overcast, wind SE 13 mph; finish 79 (humidity 74%, dew point 701), overcast, wind S 12 mph.

Two personal records according to Strava: PR on Soccer/Lacrosse Road to Crystal Springs (3:25),
2nd fastest time
on Deer Springs to Lake Village Sprint (1:33). I lost a local legend to William Collins on the KPHS Sprint segment that was part of today’s bike ride.

American Airlines surpasses goal of gifting bicycles to children across D-FW for Christmas

Author: Kevin Reece | www.wfaa.com

"Hopefully being on the back side of the pandemic, this is a great opportunity for all of us to give back," said American Airlines Captain Bill Elder.

DALLAS — The American Airlines Flight Academy near DFW Airport is where pilots from across the country travel to train and update their qualifications in state-of-the-art multi-million dollar flight simulators. But to get there this time of year, they also walk past a growing gauntlet of bicycles.

"I think every kid loves a bicycle, right," Captain Bill Elder, a 777 and 787 pilot and the training and standards manager at the flight academy said. "It’s very impressive, especially from start to where we are now."

For several years, …

Video: Tyler church give students at Andy Woods Elementary new bicycles

By Erin Wides | www.kltv.com

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – Andy Woods Elementary School students’ received a brand-new bicycle given to them by members of the Pollard United Methodist Church.

This is the tenth year for the donation and the church provides to one boy and one girl from each grade level with a bicycle. Teachers get to nominate one boy and one girl for having good behavior and leadership qualities to be in the running.

Shock and excitement were the two most expressed feelings at today’s tenth annual bicycle donation to Andy Woods Elementary School students. Members of Pollard United Methodist Church spent last week building the bikes to give today.

“I was very surprised on seeing all the bikes,” said fifth grader, Emilio.

Students were called to the library and some thought they were in trouble.

“I’m like, oh no, what did I do wrong,” questioned fourth grader Alliana

But it was …

Yes, you read that right. An elected official in Houston, Texas thinks we put too much "emphasis on cyclists to the detriment of those riding in vehicles."

Am I In The Southern Hemisphere? December Weather Feels Like It

Texbiker.net Posted on December 16, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 16, 2021

The wind quieted down from yesterday when I started today’s bike ride at 10:35 AM. This is the first ride I started before 11 in some time. I rode my Canyon Endurace over the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route for 33.41 miles. This was the 21st time biking this route in 2021, 17 times on the Canyon and 4 times on the Lynskey R300. I finished at 1:12 PM, much earlier than the other rides this week.

Midway through the ride while going east over Lake Houston the wind felt stronger than the 10 mph at the start. I stopped at FM 2100 and Old Atascocita road to check the weather and the wind had picked up, 13 mph from the south with 22 mph gusts. With the earlier start I chose to wear shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. The sun was in and out of the clouds and the extra jersey compensated for the slight chill when that happened. Overall weather: start 76 (humidity 84%, dew point 71), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph; FM2100 at Old Atascocita Road mostly cloudy, wind S 13 mph gusts 22 mph; finish 79 (humidity 74%, dew point 70), mostly cloudy, wind S 9 mph.

After fighting the wind yesterday I thought my legs might not be up to another headwind but they came through. Monday when I rode in Zwift and did some climbing did it help with the wind yesterday and today?

Any day it seems FM 2100 southbound lanes will open for traffic. The video shows what it looks like.

I thought I might see other cyclists with the earlier start but no one crossed my path.

According to Strava I am now the local legend on these two segments: Local Legend on Havenbrook sprint and Local Legend on Havenbrook Sprint – SAFE. I need to check what the difference is between them.
