About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Zwift – Neokyo Makuri Islands All-Nighter

Texbiker.net Posted on December 13, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 13, 2021

Supposedly the temperature would ride to the upper 60’s today but around 10:30 AM I didn’t see much movement so I looked for a Zwift event. I found the ZESP Chihchilla’s Neokyo Makuri Islands All-Nighter starting at 12:15 PM. I’m searching for new routes in Neokyo and this was one of them. I got dressed and the livestream setup and waited for the start time. There wasn’t a crowd in group D with only 82 people registered. The pace was 2.0 – 2.5 w/kg average for 60 minutes. The All-Nighter covers nearly all of the roads in Neokyo with not too much climbing but I wasn’t planning on maintaining that high of pace. After the opening rush I settled in with two other riders for the ride. Most of the ride we were in sight of each other but on some of the climbs I pulled away but they reeled me back. Near the end of the ride I noticed the red marker of the sweeper was behind me by several minutes. I could’ve called for help to get closer to the riders in front of me by over a minute but I was holding a comfortable pace. At 15.1 miles I got the notice of completing the route but there was still time left in the hour ride. The 3 of us continued and I finished with 17.75 miles (according to Strava) and 610 feet of climbing. The route contained 548 feet of climbing. I remember seeing one climb hit 10% but not for long. Today I pedaled standing up for many of the 5% or above climbs.

Strava reported a new personal record: PR on Rooftop Rendezvous (8:38)

John Paul Barajas | www.ksat.com

The family of Jesus Cardenas gathered Sunday to help keep his memory alive

SAN ANTONIO – Eight months later and one man’s killer is still on the run from San Antonio police.

The family of Jesus Cardenas, 38, returned to the scene of the crime on Sunday afternoon on Evergreen Street and Evergreen Court, to make sure no one forgets his memory.

Cardenas was seen riding a bicycle in the Tobin Hill area before he was shot by someone in a vehicle around 2 a.m., April 12.

He was struck in the head by the gunfire and died at the scene.

Ever since his death, his mother returns to the scene on the 12 day of each month to lay flowers or for this …

Twin sister Isabella Holmgren duelled in a race-long battle with U.S.A.’s Chloe Fraser, rounding out the podium in third place. The pace was high for the entire race and these …

Video: Members of Tyler community build bicycles for children in need for Christmas

By Erin Wides | www.kltv.com

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – There’s a bicycle build that’s been a 35-year tradition in Tyler around the holidays. Community members in Tyler try to get these bikes to families in time for Christmas Day.

Seaborn Nesbett is on the board of directors for Salvation Army and helps co-chair the build.

“We’re not building bicycles; we’re building memories because everyone remembers what their first bike looked like, even to the color,” he said.

Those at Pollard United Methodist Church, scouts, Rotarians, and community members understand the importance of their task of assembling the bicycles.

“It’s a fairly simple process. Each year, they get simpler and simpler because there are only about …

Zwift – Neokyo Stage 4 Badge Hunt Biking Makuri Islands Temples and Towers

Texbiker.net Posted on December 11, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 11, 2021

Reading the route description I expected 2,261 feet of climbing over the 20.7 miles. As the ride progressed I wondered how it could cram the remaining climbing into 4 or 5 miles. I saw a message from another Zwifter commenting about the climbing but not saying how much they did. Relief came in the last mile with only 1,052 feet instead of the original 2,261 feet. The higher number would have been hard for this flatlander.

Most of the event I was around position 800 out of 880 riders but that improved some by the end. I looked the event results up on ZwiftPower.com. I didn’t try to race, just complete for the badge. Of the riders registered on ZwiftPower.com I came in at 471.

ZwiftPower.com Event Results. I'm at 471

On most of the climbs of 7% or more I stood up pedaling. My Wahoo Kickr Snap was pretty stable when I stood up. One change I made recently was to replace the soft Wahoo floor mat resting on the carpet with 2 rigid floor mats. This seems to make pedaling standing up more stable on the carpet.

During the ride I listened to SirusXM Seventies on 7 with Casey Kasem counting down the top 40 from 12/20/1970. Brought back some memories. I was 23 at the time.

From ZwiftInsider.com the route description reads, “Introduced in Zwift’s November 2021 update, Temples and Towers is the biggest Makuri Islands route, both in elevation and distance. It takes you up all three KOMs: Rooftop, Castle, and Temple.” I should’ve checked the route description there rather than relying on the one in the event. The elevation gain says 919 feet, slightly less than my 1,052 feet.

My results according to Strava.
