About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cyclist teaches life-saving skills to fellow women riders

By Jose Arredondo | spectrumlocalnews.com

SAN ANTONIO — Veronica Salas can often be found on her purple fixie bike cruising the streets of San Antonio. Even though she looks like she’s ready to conquer the Tour de France, she remembers her early days of being the only woman on the road.

“So those things kind of steered me from getting out on my bike and saying, ‘Hey, let’s ride,’ because I was nervous still,” Salas said.

Now, with eight years of experience under her belt, she’s able to offer a helping hand to inexperienced cyclists through her …

PHOTOS: The Trail Foundation celebrates 50th Anniversary of Butler Hike and Bike Trail

by Fred Cantu, Stephanie Becerra | cbsaustin.com

AUSTIN, Texas — It’s hard to believe it’s been 50 years. On December 10, 1971, former First Lady Lady Bird Johnson invited the media to a news conference announcing the launch of the Town Lake Beautification Committee. It was the beginning of what we now know as the Butler Trail around Lady Bird Lake.

The people who now use the Butler Trail are probably familiar with the biggest name on the list of charter members of the Town Lake Beautification Committee, Lady Bird Johnson. Her granddaughter, Catherine Robb, was present to mark the 50th anniversary of this visionary undertaking. She commented, “Even though she’s not here, I feel her …

‘They speed like it’s a highway’: Some consider moving out after China Spring girl’s death

By Rosemond Crown | www.kwtx.com

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Some residents in a China Spring neighborhood told KWTX they are moving out after a 12-year-old girl died after she was struck and killed while riding her bike this week.

Waco Police said Alina Miller, a student at China Spring Middle School, was riding her bike south on Salem Way around 4p.m. on Monday when she was struck by the driver of a vehicle going west on the intersecting Orchid Lane.

Waco Police are still investigating and have not accused the driver of any wrongdoing, but neighbors like Sandy Shaw said speeding has consistently been an issue in this neighborhood.

“Drivers in that area do not take caution that kids could be playing, dogs may have gotten out of the house – they just speed like it’s a …

29 MPH Wind Gusts Tested My Legs

Texbiker.net Posted on December 10, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 10, 2021

I have video evidence of why it has been so warm yesterday and today. Watch the video!

Nothing to distract me from starting today/s bike ride so Canyon Endurace wheels down and rolling at 10:40 AM. The weather was warm again with 79 degrees at the start and 82 at the 1:24 PM finish. Wind was stiff from the south at 13 mph and 22 mph gusts increasing to 15 mph and 29 mph gusts when I finished. My legs rested on the way to Caney Creek but got punished on the return to Kingwood. This was the 19th bike ride on today’s route, “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood”, in 2021. 8 times riding on the Canyon Endurace and 11 times on the Lynskey R300. The distance was 32.45 miles, a little longer than usual because of s side trip to see the cause of the warm weather.

The strong headwind had me pedaling hard and not going very fast. Trees didn’t provide much relief either. Riding east put the wind from my right which seemed easier than riding west fro some reason. Thankfully my legs felt stronger than yesterday.

Because of the strong wind I dressed a little warmer than yesterday wearing shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. I felt comfortable with the wind keeping me cool. Weather conditions: start 79 (humidity 81%, dew point 73), mostly cloudy, wind S 13 mph gusts 22 mph; finish 82 (humidity 71%, dew point 72), mostly cloudy, wind S 15 mph gusts 29 mph. Riding north a few times the wind pushed me hard enough I didn’t need to pedal to maintain my speed. Based on the forecast tomorrow will probably be a Zwift biking day; some early morning rain and dropping temperature into the 50’s.

Traffic seemed light with no issues. At several intersections drivers motioned me through even though they had the right of way. Courteous drivers are nice.

2022 Bicycling Travel Awards

By Caitlin Giddings | www.bicycling.com

f traveling by bike has taught us anything, it’s that there’s no better way to experience the history, food, and culture of a region. The past year and a half put a damper on our travel plans and brought more isolation and anxiety into our lives. But it hasn’t pumped the brakes on our wanderlust. If anything, we’re more ready for a two-wheeled escape where our biggest concerns are the simple essentials: where to rest, find water and food, and ride next.

The cycling adventures on our list are long and short, local and international, self-guided and led by the pros. Whether you want to cruise singletrack for a …

That’s the ideal time of year to escape south and take on this 311-mile paved loop mapped by the Adventure Cycling Association. The route starts and ends in downtown Austin near the Texas state capitol, where you can down all the breakfast tacos you can handle at Veracruz All Natural. Next, you’ll head out to gorgeous hill country on mostly rural county and state roads, outlined by blankets of bluebonnets and other wildflowers. You won’t want to miss a stop in Fredericksburg, known for its wineries and German heritage sites. This route is easy to customize with numerous options to shorten your trip or add destinations like the otherworldly Summit Trail at Enchanted Rock. …

Boom! My Wish Granted, Warmer But Windy

Texbiker.net Posted on December 9, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2021

During yesterday’s bike ride I said I wanted it to be 20 degrees warmer. Well it was for today’s bike ride. And it may repeat tomorrow too. That warm in December is a treat for cyclists like me. But to go with the warm weather a strong SW 13 mph buffeted me and my legs. It all began at 11:47 AM as I rolled out riding my Lynskey R300 bike heading for the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route. By the 2:52 PM finish my legs were cooked by the headwind crossing Lake Houston back to Atascocita Shores Drive. I rode 35.78 miles but not quickly. Over the lake biking west I looked at my Bolt computer several times to see my speed at 9 to 10 mph. I stood up trying to go faster but I’m not sure it made much difference.

This was the 7th time biking this route in 2021. The last time was October 7th. Not sure why I waited so long to ride the route. Today’s mileage was typical of the other rides. This year 5 of the rides have been on my Canyon Endurace bike and 2 on my Lynskey R300.

12-9-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today's Route
12-9-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary Today’s Route
12-9-2021 Golden Cheetah Bike Ride Overview

FM 1960 construction added barriers covering the shoulder headed east from Atascocita Shores Drive to where the asphalt ends and concrete begins. About 200 yards. I timed my riding there to when the traffic was not coming behind me. In future rides this may cause a delay as I wait for a traffic opening. The west bound side is unchanged.

With the warm weather my clothing lightened up: shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves. I used the last of my spray sunscreen meaning a switch to lotion. More time to apply that. Weather conditions: start 81 (humidity 76%, dew point 72), mostly cloudy, wind SW 13 mph; finish 83 (humidity 69%, dew point 72), partly cloudy, wind SW 12 mph. The humidity and dew point being high meant a muggy ride.

Yesterday I discovered duplicate workouts in SportTracks. I contacted SportTracks support and they looked at the workouts. I upload ride data from the Wahoo Element app on my phone at the finish of rides. SportTracks said Wahoo uploaded the data again on 2 different dates with the last being December 8th. I can delete the duplicates but it is extra work. I thought it was just SportTracks but after today’s ride I went to RideWithGPS.com and they are duplicated there too. Strava doesn’t appear to have the problem. I sent an email to Wahoo support to see what happened.
