About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cancelled Zwift Ride, Went Outside For Real Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 8, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 8, 2021

I kept an eye on the temperature as it slowly increased to 60 and then 63. With the overcast sky going for a bike ride didn’t look inviting. I opened the Zwift app searching for an event that appealed to me. I found one beginning at noon and click on the attend mark. But as I thought about it more and the temperature going up another degree I decided to cancel the Zwift ride and go for a real bike ride. I got dressed, bundling up some to counter the chilly (for me anyway) weather with shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, windbreaker jacket, and full finger gloves. I was up to the chill now.

The Canyon Endurace and I rolled out at 12:18 PM riding my “Kingwood-Community Drive-Valley Ranch” route. I guessed it would cover 25 miles and actually biked 25.72 miles. This put me over my 150 mile goal for December with 163.5 miles. Looking in SportTracks I thought I rode this route several times in 2021 but it turns out today was the only time. I think I confused the route with another one that goes the same roads until I get to Valley Ranch Parkway at FM 1314. Then the other route goes NW on FM 1314 to McQueen road and back.

Weather conditions: start 64 (humidity 91%, dew point 61), overcast, wind NE 6 mph; finish 62 (humidity 92%, dew point 60), overcast, wind NE 7 mph. Not much wind or it would’ve felt colder. Thursday is supposed to be in the 80’s. I will wait and see if that happens. Today was supposed to reach 71 but short by 7 degrees at my home weather station.

Letters to the Editor: Thanks for a good Samaritan

Letters to the Editor: Thanks for a good Samaritan Austin American-Statesman Ricardo B. Brazziell AMERICAN-STATESMAN 1/3/09 Austin Cyclist speed down HWY 360 Saturday morning as they take advantage of the sunny weather Gratitude for a good Samaritan who helped a septuagenerian on a bike

I’d like to express my gratitude to a good Samaritan.

I’m a 73-year old avid cyclist. On a recent afternoon, I had a slight spill trying to do a U-turn. A passing motorist, a 30-ish woman, stopped and asked how I was doing.

When I said I was OK, she said to check out my bike. If it wasn’t working, she’d give me a ride home. She then waited by the side of the road while I checked out the bike. Fortunately, it was fine. She was very nice.

Shortly before, I had stopped to check a text message. A passing couple on a tandem bicycle asked if I was OK. Austin generally treats cyclists well.

Bike shortage impacts local Toys for Tots collection

By Megan Vanselow | www.kwtx.com

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Tuesday morning the Heart of Texas Builders Association dropped off 87 bikes to Toys for Tots, and say it was a struggle to get the bikes this year.

“We’re known for buying the bikes and we wanted to keep that going. We’ve been doing this for a little over 26 years, but normally we donate over 100 bikes,” Jim Patterson, President of the Heart of Texas Builders Association said.

“This year has been a lot different than years past we had to plan ahead just to make sure there were bicycles we could buy.”

Patterson says fewer bikes seemed to be available on the market, and what they could get was more expensive than years past.

“Its because of the availability of them and then our dollar isn’t going as far as it used to,” Patterson explained.

Sergeant Peter Newcomer says they haven’t had …

Dallas Bike Lane Infrastructure Overhaul Gains Momentum, But Will It Be Enough?

Matt Goodman | www.dmagazine.com

On Wednesday, the City Council votes on hiring a consultant to update its decade-old bike plan. And a new committee will be established to keep the process on track.

The city of Dallas will enter 2022 with grand plans to update its now decade-old bike plan, which had similarly grand ambitions that never manifested. Since its completion in 2011, the city has opened more trails and a nonprofit is leading an effort to create a 50-mile loop around the city, including new routes throughout east and southern Dallas. But what hasn’t changed much since 2011 is how poor our urban cycling infrastructure is, something Peter Simek wrote about a few months ago.

A memo sent on Friday to the Dallas City Council announced a new …

Volunteers needed to build bicycles for San Antonio kids

SAN ANTONIO — Having a bike for many children is a typical part of childhood. It can give them freedom and a sense of responsibility – which is why San Antonio’s Earn a Bike program is looking for volunteers to help this weekend.

A total of 18 volunteers are needed to act as build coaches and mentor volunteers. The program is celebrating its seventh year in San Antonio.

Zwift – Makuri Islands Wandering Flats

Texbiker.net Posted on December 7, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 7, 2021

I wanted to ride in the Neokyo world and found a way to do it when it isn’t a guest world. Create a meetup, select the world and course, then invite someone who follows you. I did that and selected Wandering Flats. I set a start time of 11:00 AM. After signing into Zwift I saw there was a scheduled meetup, joined the ride and waited for 11:00 AM. I had a problem with my extra keyboard not working. I knocked it off the stand beside my Blue Norcross AL bike and it wouldn’t work. I guess I broke it. I stopped the ride to get the main keyboard and mouse to change cameras and control the livestream through OBS.

This was my first ride on this route. I looked up the information on ZwiftInsider.com.

This the longest and flattest route route in Makuri. I think there were longer routes but very hilly. The hill at 20km contained most of the climbing. I was able to stand up and pedal without my rear wheel slipping thanks to tightening it after the last ride. 476 feet of climbing over 16.2 miles.

Outside the temperature was 57 degrees when i started Zwift. Last night when I created the meetup I thought it might be chilly plus I need some Zwift miles to reach my 800 mile goal for the year. I need 117 more miles. Tomorrow the weather is supposed to warm up so a road ride is planned.
