About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

183 North Project set to bring more toll lanes to northwest Austin

by: Amanda Dugan | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — As areas like Cedar Park, Leander and Liberty Hill grow more popular for people to move, traffic is increasing along a stretch of US 183.

Specifically, between State Highway 45 North and the MoPac — a route that many take to reach downtown Austin.

The 183 North Project, a new $612 million project in northwest Austin and will reduce travel times and improve mobility for commuters, local drivers, visitors to the region, and people who prefer to use public transit, ride their bike or walk. …

Cleburne rebuild cheered as latest renewal of Third Ward

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

Cars and bicyclists travel east along Cleburne Street next to Texas Southern University on Monday, Dec. 6, 2021, in Houston. City, county and university officials celebrated the completion of the $12 million construction project on Cleburne Street between Ennis and Scott during an event Monday morning.

Not long after she arrived in Houston in June, new Texas Southern University President Lisia Crumpton-Young said campus and elected officials in Third Ward should be “walking the walk and not talking the talk.” Along Cleburne Street, adjacent to the university, meeting that challenge in large part was about making it possible to walk at all.

Officials on Monday cheered completion of the first of a series of street improvements in Third Ward — historically neglected when sidewalk and street money was doled out — aimed at making streets safer, smoother and more able to remain open rather than flooded during Houston’s frequent storms. The work was paid for mostly by …

Letter: Bicycle safety

Mike Ford, Longview | www.news-journal.com

Please be aware of bicyclists on Longview thoroughfares!

Earlier this week, my wife and I were stopped at the intersection of Fourth Street and Hawkins Parkway. As the driver, I was attempting a right turn on red from Fourth onto Hawkins. I looked right and left prior to making the turn. Both directions were clear of traffic, but as I began the right turn, my wife shouted “Bicycle!” I promptly hit the brake and stopped before hitting a young girl riding across Hawkins against the red light and oncoming traffic.

She was not wearing a helmet! This is not unusual because the helmet will mess up your hair. Please wear a helmet! Many Longview people ride bikes for pleasure, exercise and …

Bicyclist in critical condition after being struck by vehicle on NW Side, police say

Cody King | www.ksat.com

SAN ANTONIO – A man is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle through an intersection on the Northwest Side, according to San Antonio police.

The crash happened around 1:28 a.m., Saturday, on Bandera Road and Cincinnati Avenue.

Police said the man rode his bike through the intersection and a pickup truck heading eastbound on Bandera hit the man.

The driver did stop to help the bicyclist, and officials said he was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.

Upon further investigation, authorities said the driver will not be charged, as he had a green light when going through the intersection and was not intoxicated.

The incident is still under investigation.

Video: Local company struggles to find bikes for annual giveaway

By Caleb Britt | www.kbtx.com

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Many items that are produced or manufactured are in short supply because of global supply chain issues, according to the New York Times. The website all reported that this is mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

College Station’s Reynolds & Reynolds experienced this first hand when trying to buy bikes for its annual Bike Build. The company’s team members have built bikes for children in need for Christmas for nearly a decade.

“You don’t really think about it as an adult, but it’s such a big part of playing outside as a kid,” Diane Besosa, a Bike Build volunteer, said.

Besosa enjoys building the bikes and giving parents one less thing to worry about during the holidays.

“They get to enjoy it Christmas morning without any of the labor involved,” Besosa said.

William Wright, the Bike Build chair, said the company normally builds …

Reynolds and Reynolds overcome supply chain shortages to give back

By: Brittany Defran | www.kxxv.com

BRYAN, Texas — This Christmas, local organizations and businesses trying to give back are facing challenges caused by supply chain shortages.

Despite these mounting odds though, Reynolds and Reynolds found a way to host their annual bike build giveaway.

Indeed, this year their elves are hard at work building bikes despite the shortages they faced this year.

For this local company, the holidays are all about giving back!

”A big proponent of ours is definitely to give back wherever …

Ordinarily the excavated material would be dispersed across several sites. Centrally locating it created an elevated point high enough to see three of Houston’s sky lines.

Unusual 200 Mile Week In December

Texbiker.net Posted on December 5, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 5, 2021

Dry but humid weather hung around one more day allowing me to ride the Kingwood streets. I needed 10 miles to make a 200 mile week. The bike ride began at 2:14 PM and finished at 3:36 PM. I biked 16.74 miles rolling the week’s total to 207.56 miles. I don’t think I’ve ever rode 200+ miles in week this late in the year. Usually the weather is not friendly and I stay inside. December miles is getting close to my 150 mile goal at 137.8 miles and only 5 days into December. I think I will exceed my goal. Today was the 14th time I biked Kingwood streets in 2021.

Lots of clouds and a light breeze describes the weather with the temperature 79 at the start and dropping to 76 by the finish. This morning fog covered the area as the dew point was near the temperature. I didn’t need any cool weather clothing. I wore shorts, a short sleeve jerseys, and arm sleeves.

Resuscitation of an Austin Ghost Bike, Part 1

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Two years ago almost at this time, a woman tragically was killed by a hit and run driver. He was never caught. Her mistake was having her bike trailer break down in the middle of the night and trying to fix it in the bike lane. She was a woman named Merry Daye who lived on the streets of Austin, Texas. Thousands of others still are without housing, thanks to the unaffordable rent and other reasons that cause this situation for so many worldwide. After her death, I organized a ghost bike and memorial ride. Her family came and spoke, and the TV news covered it. Recently, someone liberated the bike from the tree by the church. I live nearby and noticed. So this bike is back in the story of my bicycle journey, and with it, Merry. Merry Daye

When I saw the bike was missing, I stopped to …
