About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Almost A Crash And Duck Feeding Frenzy

Texbiker.net Posted on December 2, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 2, 2021

A later start for today’s bike with the Canyon Endurace wheels rolling at 12:51 PM. This gave the weather some time to warm up and I took advantage of that wearing shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves. By the time I finished at 3:03 PM the clouds increased but the temperature stayed at 76. I rode my “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route going 28.24 miles. Added to yesterday’s miles December totals 60.64 miles, 40% of my road miles goal in 2 days. Not a very big goal though at 150 miles. Today was the 9th time biking this route in 2021.

Year to date I biked 8,986 miles (road + Zwift) which is 152 miles more than 2020. Taking time for my trip to New York City I thought I wouldn’t catch up.

The video shows the duck frenzy.

Excitement happened as I rode the greenbelt rail beside Kingwood Drive next to Kingwood High School. At the entrance to the school I slowed to cross with a car waiting to my right on the other side of Kingwood Drive. Traffic was approaching and I didn’t think the car would dart across but they did. I grabbed the right brake lever, sliding the rear tire, turned to the left as the car pulled up beside me. They stopped and I went in front of the car across the entrance and back on the trail. A flashback to a crash I had in 2013 at Atascocita High School when a girl pulled out in front of me and I slammed into the car.

Weather conditions for the bike ride: tart 76 (humidity 69%, dew point 66) mostly cloudy, wind N 0 mph; finish 77 (humidity 67%, dew point 65), mostly cloudy, wind W 5 mph. Friday weather probably will repeat today which means another day to ride.

‘I don’t know how I survived’: Around the world cyclist returns to Central Texas 2 years after horror crash

by: Harley Tamplin | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Two years ago, Josh Quigley’s dream of riding his bicycle around the world was crushed under the wheels of a car traveling 70 mph in Temple.

Quigley knows he is lucky to have survived the horror crash, which surprisingly led to Texas earning a special place in his heart.

“Thanks to the people of Texas,” he said as he returned to Austin on Wednesday. “This is a place that has become very special to me.”

In 2019, the cyclist was …

A Great Ride …

Red Crank – Final One! | Bike Barn email

It is with great sadness that Lee and I are saying goodbye to so many great friends and riding partners. For 19 years we have put everything possible into delivering a business that we are proud of and one we hope served the cycling community in Houston. Bike Barn has had an amazing run serving Houston for over 39 years! We thank Rufus and Kitty Barnes who founded Bike Barn in 1983. They were great mentors and built a strong brand that we could build upon and expand in Houston.

The next step for Bike Barn will be under the leadership of Trek Bicycle. They have been a strong partner of ours for years and we know you will see many positive changes in your store experience. You will also see all the familiar friendly faces and knowledgeable staff you might already know. We are excited to see opportunities for our staff to grow with a new company and the opportunity for our stores to grow and continue to serve the Houston market.

Lee and I will continue to ride locally and be involved in many local cycling non-profits and charity rides. We hope to see many of you out on rides and want to say thanks for supporting Bike Barn.

As the transition to Trek occurs, there will be some temporary store closures next week. See below for more details. All the stores will be open under the new Trek ownership on Saturday December 11th.

On December 1st I Don’t Remember 76 Degrees Where I Grew Up

Texbiker.net Posted on December 1, 2021 by Rick AnkrumDecember 1, 2021

December bike rides started with some warm weather which is an important reason why I live in the Houston area. I have a modest road biking goal for December, 150 miles. The weather can be chilly and wet so I don’t expect to ride as much as other months. To get off to a good start I began today’s ride at 11:33 AM aboard my Canyon Endurace bike. The route went north on my “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” riding 32.41 miles by the time I finished at 2:12 PM. That leaves 118 miles for the rest of the month. My other goal is 133 miles on Zwift rides.

The ride passed many yards with Christmas decorations. The video has clips from a couple of them.

Weather conditions: start 73 (humidity 71%, dew point 63), partly cloudy, wind N 0 mph; finish 76 (humidity 59%, dew point 60), mostly cloudy, wind W 7 mph. I wore shorts, a long sleeve jersey with a short sleeve jersey over that. The weather forecast points to more weather like this until Sunday. I plan on taking advantage of it while its here. Where I grew up (SE Ohio) I don’t remember 76 degrees on December 1st.

On the way to FM 1485 the tailwind allowed me to keep my speed at 17 mph or above. On the way back to Kingwood the headwind hampered me at time but my legs felt good and I powered along.
