About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Classic Cars, No Leg Warmers Required

Texbiker.net Posted on November 30, 2021 by Rick AnkrumNovember 30, 2021

Today’s bike ride wrapped up my November biking. I waited until 11: 44 AM to start so that I could skip the leg warmers and long sleeve thermal jersey. It warmed up to 68 by then though it was a little chilly until I generate some extra body heat. The went south and east on what I call “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. My Lynskey R300 carried me for 34.26 miles which boosted my November road miles to 312.4 miles. This fell short of my 360 mile goal. If I had braved the chilly weather last Friday and Saturday I probably would have reached my goal. Instead on those 2 days I rode Zwift for the first time since spring. Adding the Zwift miles plus some miles I rode on a Bowflex C6 exercise bike while I was in New York City November totaled 393 miles.

The weather warmed up a little from yesterday but the clouds were more prevalent. Weather conditions: start 68 (humidity 73%, dew point 59), partly cloudy, wind SE 6 mph; finish 71 (humidity 63%, dew point 58), partly cloudy, wind variable 5 mph. It may be slightly warmer tomorrow.

Construction on FM 2100 continues. In the video there is a clip at FM 2100 and Old Atascocita Road. The railroad crossing at FM 1960 added some asphalt but I still had to walk from the unopened south bound lanes to the north bound lanes to access FM 1960.

Check the video for two classic cars I saw along the route.

Bicyclist struck, killed by intoxicated driver in northwest Houston, police say

Ana Gonzalez | www.click2houston.com

HOUSTON – A man is facing charges after he struck and killed a bicyclist early Monday, police say.

It happened at the 2800 of West Little York Road near Mayor Sylvester Turner Park.

Police say at around 2:30 a.m., a man was riding his bicycle with lights on the far right lane near a curb while a white Toyota pickup truck was driving at a high rate of speed on West Little York Road. That was when the truck hit the bicyclist, went off the road, and hit a pole nearby an apartment complex.

The man on the bicycle died at the scene, according to police.

The driver of the truck, believed to be in his 20s, and a female passenger were both sent to the hospital in stable condition, police say. Both occupants reportedly showed signs of intoxication.

Police say the driver will face intoxication manslaughter charges.

Pickup driver hits, kills man on bike in north Houston, police say

‘This is the predictable, preventable result of a transportation system build solely around cars and trucks,’ BikeHouston executive director Joe Cutrufo said of the crash.

The driver of a pickup truck who police believe was intoxicated struck and killed a man on a bicycle in north Houston early Monday morning, and advocates are sounding the alarm on how safe Houston streets are for those on bikes.

"This is the predictable, preventable result of a transportation system built solely around cars and trucks," said Joe Cutrufo, executive director of BikeHouston. "The victim did everything right, and still it cost him his life."

Longing For Summer, Buster Brown Up Ended

Texbiker.net Posted on November 29, 2021 by Rick AnkrumNovember 29, 2021

After three days of not biking on the road the weather warmed up enough for me to get out and ride. I chose my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route starting at 11:26 AM. I varied the route slight when I reach FM 1314 in Porter. Rather than continuing north on the service road I turned right onto FM 1314. At Loop 494 I turned left and followed it all the way to New Caney. I don’t think it made much difference in the mileage as I ended with 35.5 miles. Missing the 3 days meant I will not reach my 360 mile goal for November but if bike tomorrow I should be over 300 miles. With today’s ride November totals 278.1 road miles. I count Zwift miles separately. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike. 17 times I rode today’s route this year.

Weather conditions: start 64 (humidity 63%, dew point 52), clear, wind calm; finish 69 (humidity 51%, dew point 50), clear, wind calm. I delayed the start waiting for the temperature to get above 60. The forecast called for a high of 70 but I bundled up for the start willing to sweat some if it warmed up. I wore shorts, leg warmers, a long sleeve thermal jersey, windbreaker jacket, and full finger gloves. I felt comfortable and didn’t sweat too much. Longing for summer weather. I finished the ride at 2:07 PM.

Along Loop 494 near the railroad crossing across from the Dollar General store I saw a bunch of cars and trucks stopped. Then I saw a Buster Brown Propane truck laying on its side with 2 big heavy duty wreckers beside it. There may have been other vehicles involved but I couldn’t tell because of the stopped vehicles. I don’t know if a train was involved.

It felt good to ride and my well rested legs didn’t complain thanks to the light breeze.
