About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Some Wind, Some Mud and A Big Turkey

Texbiker.net Posted on November 24, 2021 by Rick AnkrumNovember 24, 2021

With fall 2/3’s over the weather changes with each day. Yesterday it was chilly (by my standard) and today warmer and much windier. I wanted to ride farther than yesterday so I chose my “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route. This is usually around 37 miles and today I biked 37.67 miles on my Lynskey R300 boosting my November total to 242.65 miles. The last time I biked this route was October 8th and the road construction along Gene Campbell Blvd. approaching the Walmart distribution center progressed to asphalt covering the dirt from October. The video shows this. Today was the 7th time riding this route in 2021.

I started the ride at 10:58 AM and finished at 1:58 PM. Watch the video to see the big turkey.

A nice tailwind pushed me to north to New Caney and then to Gene Campbell Blvd. I wasn’t sure how the wind would treat me riding west on Gene Campbell but mostly it felt like a tailwind. The headwind waited for me at FM 1314 and the ride to the SE back towards Porter. On FM 1314 the trees to my right reduced the wind some but when I was out in the open it was strong. I don’t know if the ICAN Cycling Alpha 50 Disc wheels make a difference but I was able to pedal strong and maintain my speed with the headwind. Maybe its just in my mind. At the start of the ride the wind was from the south at 15 mph and when I finished it was from the SE at 15 mph with 19 mph gusts. I almost made a mistake with my kit choice. I was going to wear shorts, a short sleeve jersey and arm sleeves but at the last moment I decided to wear shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. The temperature was 73 during the ride and the wind chill made my kit choice feel comfortable.

On Rock Creek Drive in Oakhurst I rode the greenbelt sidewalk as I approached Northpark Drive. Since my last ride there construction removed a section of concrete leaving about 8 feet of mud. I didn’t want to get off and walk through the mud so I rode through it. Fortunately it was dry enough not sink too far in giving me a taste of cyclocross. I stopped to scrap the mud off the tires so to not throw it on the frame. I am not a fan of mud.

By James Hartley | www.star-telegram.com

A GoFundMe for a bicyclist who died after an accident Sunday at Gateway Park in Fort Worth raised more than $3,500 in just over three hours Tuesday evening.

Ray Reza, 41, died in the intensive care unit at JPS Hospital in Fort Worth, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s website. The medical examiner has not yet listed a cause of death.

Police said the accident involved a bike and a wooden bridge, but could not release any further details as to what happened until the medical examiner’s office determined a cause of death.

Returned To The Scene of The Crime

Texbiker.net Posted on November 23, 2021 by Rick AnkrumNovember 23, 2021

Today’s bike ride returned to the scene of the crime, Saturday’s flat tire on the Lake Houston causeway. I am happy to report the ride across the lake went without incident. I began the bike ride at 11:37 AM after waiting for the temperature to go up a few degrees. The route was different from Saturday just in the order I rode the streets. The route today was “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” and I biked 33.4 miles. My November miles stand at 204.99, still short of my 360 mile goal but getting closer. This is a road mile goal and the month is getting shorter. Will I make my goal? The weather for Friday and Saturday may be too cold for a road ride so I may switch to Zwift for the first time since early spring. I have been keeping up on the Zwift updates during my absence and ready to check them out.

When I got up this morning the temperature was in the low 40’s but as the sun moved higher the temperature did too. I bundled up for the ride wearing shorts, leg warmers, a long sleeve thermal jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. The wind was milder than yesterday and while the weather conditions didn’t register any wind I still hit a headwind from the SE and it had a chill to it. Weather conditions: start 65 (humidity 44%, dew point 43), mostly clear, wind calm; finish 68 (humidity 48%, dew point 47), partly cloudy, wind calm.

With the late start I thought I might see the Sunset Limited Amtrak train near Huffman but I didn’t. I was on that train November 2nd on my way to New Orleans and New York City. The returning Sunset Limited takes a different route back into Houston through Crosby.

Before the ride I moved my Lynskey R300 bike from where I usually park it in the breakfast area. I could see the ICAN Alpha 50 Disc wheels better and I think it makes the bike look sharp. I measured the rim’s on my Canyon Endurace to compare them to the Lynskey and the Canyon’s are 10mm less at 40mm.

Texas Hell Week Joins RAAM Family Of Events

www.endurancesportswire.com

/ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Texas Hell Week has been an early season tradition since 1991. The Texas Hill Country offers the best Spring cycling in America. The Hill Country features 1,000 miles of paved roads with little or no traffic. From mid-March to mid-April the wild flowers are in bloom and the weather is perfect, making for an unforgettable cycling experience.

Texas Hell Week originated when Nick Gerlich, an avid cyclist, randonneur, ultra-racer and associate professor at West Texas A & M University, convinced a few friends from the Upper Midwest to meet in Texas for some early season warm weather riding. After a long winter they wanted to ride themselves into shape by logging as many miles as they could in a week. With tongue in cheek they dubbed the informal get together “Texas Hell Week.” Thus, the tradition was born.

Over the next two decades, the event grew, attracting over 300 riders annually from across the USA. After 27 years Gerlich decided to …
