About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

What’s With The 23 and 25 MPH Wind Gusts?

Texbiker.net Posted on November 22, 2021 by Rick AnkrumNovember 22, 2021

I tried to go biking yesterday but just as I was getting ready to leave it started raining. By the time the streets dried it was too late to ride thanks to standard time. Today was different with a bright blue sky, low humidity (for Houston anyway) but strong wind from the NE. I rolled out at 11:31 AM riding my Lynskey R300 bike to ride my “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route and finished at 2:29 PM. I altered the route some from what I described in the video skipping Briar Tree and taking Bentwood Oaks Drive back to the US59 southbound feeder. I stayed on the feeder until I made the u-turn at Kingwood Drive. I rode a little longer than I guessed coming up at 37.33 miles. This moved my November total to 171.59 miles. I don’t know if I will reach my 360 mile goal but I’m going to try.

Wind was a challenge biking north to SH 242. At the start it was 13 mph with 23 mph gusts from the NE and when I finished the wind increased to 17 mph and 25 mph gusts. Fortunately the tailwind after making the u-turn at SH 242 helped me up the pace and my overall average speed hit 14.1 mph by the time I got to Kingwood Drive. The temperature stayed in mid 60’s and I was comfortable with shorts, leg warmers, a long sleeve thermal jersey, and windbreaker jacket. In the shade I felt the chill but in the sun it went away.

The ICAN Cycling Alpha 50 Disc wheels continue to ride quickly. The other Vision 30 wheels felt heavy while the Alpha 50 wheels seem to move much quicker.

With the days off for my trip to New York City my legs have been sore after biking. Maybe not riding yesterday allowed some recovery. Today my legs felt good and not sore.

Update on my Saturday flat. Later Saturday I tried to patch the tube again but the nail put several holes in the tube on both sides and I couldn’t get a patch to cover them all. I retired the tube and put a new one in my seat bag. The tube I put in during the ride is holding air after I pumped it to 90 psi at home.

I took these photos at Valley Ranch parkway and the Grand Parkway. The sign has lights and garland for Christmas, probably looks good at night.

The 49th Annual Moonlight Ramble Rolls Through Houston

Doogie Roux | www.houstonpress.com

After a virtual iteration of the ride, BikeHouston on Saturday brought back a decades-old tradition of late-night pedaling under a full moon, the Moonlight Ramble. This year’s event boasted a 12.9 mile route that started at BakerRipley’s Ripley House at 4410 Navigation and cut through Houston’s historic neighborhoods of Magnolia Park, Lawndale, and Third Ward. The ride serves as a fundraiser for BikeHouston as they advocate for greater safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians throughout the city. Houston’s Moonlight Ramble started in 1973 when Daniel and Joy Boone, of the now-shuttered bike shop, Boone Cycles, visited St. Louis and participated in the original iteration of the …

Why San Antonio’s bike-share company is going all-electric

by Brendan Gibbons | sanantonioreport.org

San Antonio’s bike-share company is fully electrifying its fleet, a sign of a growing global trend toward e-bike riding.

By the end of November, BCycle, which has operated the city’s only bike-share fleet for a decade, will have converted its entire fleet of roughly 300 bikes to pedal-assist bikes that give riders a boost from a battery-powered motor.

“We’re seeing it, really, across the entire cycling industry,” J.D. Simpson, BCycle general manager, said of the growth of e-bikes worldwide. …

‘Strong together’: Hundreds ride in women’s cycling event on San Antonio’s South Side

Balance was key for Sienna Wilson, 4, on Saturday’s cold, foggy morning as she and her grandmother Crystal Wilson, 57, tackled their first cycling event together.

Sienna sat on an extra seat strapped to the front of her grandmother’s bicycle as they made their way through a 10-mile course at the Tour de las Chingonas, an all-women’s event that started and ended on Texas A&M-San Antonio’s campus on the South Side.

The pair from Fresno were among about 700 cyclists from across the state. Participants had a …

Lake Houston Causeway Claims Another Tube

Texbiker.net Posted on November 20, 2021 by Rick AnkrumNovember 20, 2021

The bike ride began with good prospects after waiting until 11:11 AM to start. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike on my usual Saturday route, “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” but that would change when I rode over Lake Houston. The weather warmed up from yesterday allowing me to ditch the leg warmers, windbreaker jacket, and full finger gloves. In place I wore shorts, a long sleeve thermal jersey (it was 69 degrees) with a short sleeve Texbiker.net jersey on top.

I was making good time when I heard a loud pop from my rear tire on the Lake Houston Causeway. At first I thought it was a rock that shot out as I rode over it but a few seconds later the rear tire went flat. I checked my position and I was about halfway across so I decided to walk to the east shore to find a quiet place to fix the flat. Watch the video for more about the flat. The good news from the flat, no one else will run over that nail. The bad news, I lost an hour and I needed to get back home by 2:30 to watch the Cincinnati vs SMU football game. A conspiracy to keep from watching? I finished the ride at 2:31 PM, only missing the first Cincinnati touchdown by the time I got inside.

Back on the road I changed the route to “Atascocita – FM2100 – Walden” because of the lost time fixing the flat and a sign saying there was road work at FM 2100 at FM 1960. Probably at the railroad tracks. I wanted to ride at least 32 miles to reach 100 miles for the week but settled for 30.97 miles. If the distance I walked on the causeway had been riding I would have done it. So far I bike 99.84 miles this week. Not too bad considering only 3 days of riding. Maybe I can ride tomorrow and get the week over 100 miles.

Later I will see if I can salvage the tube from the flat. Thank goodness my spare tube was good this time.
