About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Work beginning this week on Flower Mound trail project

By Mark Smith | www.crosstimbersgazette.com

Crews will begin working on the Pink Evening Primrose Trail Connection project this week, the town of Flower Mound said in a news release on Monday.

The $915,000 project includes the installation of an eight-foot-wide, 150-foot-long pedestrian bridge over Timber Creek near Gaston Park on College Parkway. Crews will also add 400 feet of multi-use trails to connect Gaston Park to the nearby River Walk and Timber Trails Park, according to the town.

The project will affect portions of Gaston Park, though the playground, basketball pad and parking lot will remain open. It is expected to be complete in April 2022.

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

“One for each of the people he almost killed with his reckless and violent behavior behind the wheel,” Rachael Maney, spokeswoman for Bike Law Network, said in a statement.

Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis presented the case to a grand jury last week, with the recommended charges. …

DAY 67: Amarillo, TX to Vega, TX: Cadillac Ranch

Thursday November 4, 2021, 43 miles (69 km) – Total so far: 2,557 miles (4,115 km) Oh – that Texas chip seal… the worst type of torturous pavement known to mankind. Plenty of it out here on little used sections of Route 66 / the frontage roads. Enough to knock your fillings loose, but fortunately I don’t have any. Can’t tell if I’m shaking from the ultra cold morning, or this road surface. But – once it warmed up a bit and we got back on regular pavement it was an exceptional day. …

DAY 68: Vega, TX to San Jon, NM: More Sad (but interesting) Ghost Towns

Friday November 5, 2021, 58 miles (93 km) – Total so far: 2,615 miles (4,208 km) The further west we go the more desolate the landscapes become. Even the ‘functioning’ towns seem like they’re in the process of failing, slowly but certainly. Some towns, like Glenrio at the Texas / New Mexico border have completely gone under. These were thriving places back in the heyday of Route 66, and now they’re just destroyed shells of their once vibrant past. It’s sad, but fascinating. …

Chisham arrives at First Christian

By Bob Campbell | www.oaoa.com

Kansas native says New and Old Testaments combine to give life lessons

MIDLAND The Rev. David Chisham says faith in Jesus Christ not only bodes well for eternity but also for the here and now.

“Some people feel that the only point to faith is that we get to go to Heaven when we die, but Jesus’s resurrection means for us that he is alive and at work among us today,” said the Rev. Chisham, new pastor of the First Christian Church at 1301 W. Louisiana Ave. “He can transform our priorities and relationships and give us hope for living.”

Chisham is a 50-year-old native of Wichita, Kan., who earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees at Abilene Christian University and Drew University in Madison, N.J., before serving as a minister in Arlington, Va., Rockville, Md., and Baton Rouge, La. He and his wife Kori have one child.

The pastor rides a bicycle for exercise and the family travels to Europe and camps at lakes in …

DAY 64: Elk City, OK to Shamrock, TX: Ghost towns of Western Oklahoma

Monday November 1, 2021, 60 miles (97 km) – Total so far: 2,419 miles (3,893 km) I’m a bit sad to be through Oklahoma already. Might be my favorite state so far. Yeah, we had some tough weather a few days ago with that bomb cyclone that came through, or whatever the technical term is for ‘Too Much Windy – Stay Inside’. Overall the people are courteous, drivers usually give PLENTY of room while passing, food has been great for the most part, and the whole state is quite scenic and changes gradually heading from east to west into a drier prairie. At the extreme west just before Texas, where we are today, the towns really turn into literal ghost towns. Sayre, where we stopped for breakfast was pretty sparse, Erick had almost …

DAY 65: Shamrock, TX to Groom, TX: Cold Wind Blowing Through the Panhandle

Tuesday November 2, 2021, 52 miles (84 km) – Total so far: 2,471 miles (3,977 km) It was abnormally cold today… at least for Texas. Same predicted for tomorrow. We started off in the mid-30 degree range and didn’t warm up much from there. This panhandle is cold. It’s got to be warmer down in the actual pan. But – this is a short stretch of Route 66, and we’ll be in New Mexico in just a few days. …

DAY 66: Groom, TX to Amarillo, TX: We’re Full-On Texas Tourists Today

Wednesday November 3, 2021, 43 miles (69 km) – Total so far: 2,514 miles (4,046 km) Another cold one. Even colder than yesterday, actually. We’ve got the gear for it… but I’m too stubborn to break it out just yet (long underwear, balaclava, shoe covers, more layers in general). I’m holding out ’til we get some serious altitude (and snow) in New Mexico. …

AEP Texas honors employee whose death prompted action to make cycling safe in Corpus Christi

Author: Michael Gibson | www.kiiitv.com

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The July 2016 cycling death of former American Electric Power Texas spokesperson Andy Heines began a real push for safety that reached Corpus Christi’s City Hall.

Councilmembers took up the issue and demanded that bike lanes be installed to give riders some protective distance from vehicles.

Heines had been riding his bicycle down SPID near Paul Jones Avenue when he was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver. The accident sparked a call for new safety measures, and former Councilman Mark Scott was one of the individuals who took the issue and ran with it.

"That was the event, I think, where the community said, ‘We’re done. We need to provide …
