About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Beloved cyclist ‘foreshadowed’ his own death on Texas roads

Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

For decades Massachusetts native Kent Wosepka had dreamed of hopping on his bike for a cross-country ride. After pledging with a friend to make the ambitious trek nearly 20 years ago, Wosepka was finally able to realize part of that journey when he and fiancée Betsy O’Brien took off from San Diego on Sept. 13, pedaling through the southern U.S. on their way to St. Augustine, Florida.

All it took was one Texas driver to kill that dream and the 51-year-old man who friends say inspired nearly everyone met with his contagious positivity. Wospeka leaves behind O’Brien, three children, and an extended family and loved ones across New England. Lew Conley, who’s been close friends with …

Ganzar ends ‘surprise second sporting career’ due to lingering concussion symptoms

By Jackie Tyson | www.cyclingnews.com

Former US Pro criterium champion Leigh Ann Ganzar (Rally Cycling) made it official Wednesday and announced her retirement from professional cycling, which she called a “surprise second sporting career that I never expected to go this far.”

The 32-year-old Colorado native stormed into the national spotlight in 2018 when riding for a small Texas-based squad, Wolfpack-Hyperthreads, and outsprinted the late-Kelly Catlin, who was a three-time track world champion, to win the US Pro Criterium title in Knoxville, Tennessee.

She would continue to rake in multiple podiums and wins in stage races and one-day events over the next three seasons, the last two with Rally Cycling, …

Annual bike ride raises funds for area volunteer fire departments

breckenridgetexan.com

On Oct. 16, dozens of people gathered in the Breckenridge City Park for the fifth annual Sloan Everett Pure Country Pedal Memorial Bike Ride, and last week, the organizers of the fundraising event donated thousands of dollars to the three local volunteer fire departments.

The bike ride brought together 77 bicycle riders, as well as many others who joined the crowd for a barbecue lunch and concert in the park. The annual event honors the memory of Sloan Everett, a Breckenridge rancher who died in a 2017 wildfire in the Texas Panhandle.

In 2019, the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce and the Everett family added the fundraising element to the event, benefiting Stephens County volunteer fire departments. The Everett family wanted to recognize the role volunteer firefighters play in rural Texas, especially because. when fire overtook Sloan and two friends as they were trying to …

2021-11-01: Del Rio to Brackettville

Monday November 1, 2021, 33 miles (53 km) – Total so far: 1,391 miles (2,239 km) It was cloudy leaving Del Rio. Since it was a short 30 mile ride, I didn’t leave until afternoon. Again it was headwinds/crosswind all the way but manageable.

I got chased by a dog approaching the airbase. It came out from behind the fence but stopped when I slowed down. We will see if that’s the way to deal with dog chase. A jet flew right above me making huge noise.

Jimmy and Sabrina rode in the other direction. We all stopped to chat a little. They were from Cleveland Ohio and is going to Phoenix. They don’t have a destination or end date. How lucky it is to be young and careless.

I got 2nd flat in my front tire. Jimmy told me he had …

Austin Will Be America’s Next Great Biking City

By: Kyle Wagenschutz | www.peopleforbikes.org

Over the last two years, the Texas capital accelerated the buildout of its all ages and abilities bike network, building more than 100 new miles with no signs of slowing down.

In 2014, the City of Austin set an ambitious goal: Build a 400-mile bicycle network that winds throughout the city, connecting urban trails, quiet neighborhood streets and new protected bike lanes. A network that would offer residents a choice in how they get around, no matter the person’s age or ability. The envisioned All Ages and Abilities (AAA) Bicycle Network would be accompanied by major street crossing improvements and other infrastructure updates, eventually delivering more mobility options, relief from congestion, greater safety to all and a more livable community for Austin residents.

Video: Seabrook bicyclist attacked by neighbor who said he was ‘making people nervous’

Brandon Walker | www.click2houston.com

SEABROOK – Stitches surrounded Elliott Reed’s bloodshot left eye as he detailed his injuries from the morning he thought he would never be able to see again.

“It’s a stitch here, stitch here,” Reed said while pointing throughout his face and recounted the moments leading up to when he said a neighbor assaulted him.

Collin Fries, 25, has been charged with misdemeanor assault. He is accused of beating Reed on Friday, Oct. 29 while at the intersection of Lakeside Drive and Hampton Strings Drive in Seabrook.

Although Reed’s injuries serve as evidence of what happened, they don’t confirm why the attack occurred.

Reed said he was riding his bike, something he does daily to control his diabetes, when he stopped for a break at a street corner a few blocks from his home of three years. …

Austin’s bike scene rolls out lessons

by Dane Eifling | www.nwaonline.com

If you want to see the future of Northwest Arkansas, you don’t need a time machine. You just need to get yourself to Austin, Texas, and get on a bike.

Recently, I had the opportunity to travel to Austin and came away feeling I had visited a fully matured version of our region. I took part in a three-day study tour of the city’s bike infrastructure to see what makes Austin the best biking city in Texas.

Ryan Hale’s Bentonville-based company, Lane Shift, planned the tour. It did a fantastic job keeping our group feed, organized and constantly moving throughout the trip. Our rides took us through Austin’s downtown, its iconic neighborhoods and streets, including 6th Street and Congress Avenue, and along scenic trails around …

The Texas 4000 Crew Remembers a Ride Unlike Any Other

By Jason Cohen | alcalde.texasexes.org

The only thing harder than biking thousands of miles across America and Canada? Not biking thousands of miles across America and Canada—after you’ve spent more than a year of your life training to do just that.

So it was in 2020 for the UT students meant to participate in the Texas 4000, an annual charity ride—“Fighting Cancer Every Mile” is its slogan—that has seen hundreds of cyclists trek from Austin to Alaska since its founding in 2004 by Chris Condit, BS ’04, MSE ’11, and Mandy Condit, BS ’05. Collectively, the event has raised more than $12.1 million, both from the ride itself—each of the current 85 participants personally secures at least $4,500 in pledged donations—and an annual tribute gala. It’s a fundraiser, an awareness-raiser, and a consciousness-raiser all in one, as well as …
