About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

November Biking Starts With October Weather

Texbiker.net Posted on November 1, 2021 by Rick AnkrumNovember 1, 2021

Nice start to November bike rides. Sunny with a light wind but it could’ve been a few degrees warmer at the 11:14 AM start. I compensated by wearing a long sleeve jersey under my GCN short sleeve jersey. The route went south and east to Huffman on what I call “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman”. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike going 34.42 miles. 16 times I biked this route in 2021. I finished at 1:54 PM today. My goal for November is a modest 360 miles due to cooling weather and shorter daylight. I will add some Zwift rides too.

Weather: start 71 (humidity 69%, dew point 61), a few clouds, wind E 5 mph; finish 76 (humidity 52%, dew point 57), a few clouds, wind variable 6 mph.

I felt energized as I pedaled. I expected more resistance from the wind riding east over Lake Houston but my legs powered along. I really enjoy riding my Canyon bike and the BiSaddle sits comfortably.

One other cyclist crossed my ride at Town Center in Kingwood.

56-Mile Birthday Bike Ride, 2021 Edition

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Yep, I did it again. For the sixth year in a row, I’ve gone out on (and once near) my birthday and rode my age. I’ve had a few friends join in for sections. Then there’s getting free food. It’s a fine tradition with only one problem: it keeps getting a mile longer every year. But that’s what they call a good or First World problem to have. Let’s get to it. …

Great Bike Ride Weather Wrapping Up October And The Week

Texbiker.net Posted on October 31, 2021 by Rick AnkrumOctober 31, 2021

It was a great bike ride to wrap up the week and the month of October. I rode the Spring Creek Greenway to Jesse Jones Park and on the return the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway into Kingwood. I wasn’t alone on the greenway. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike and today’s 25.87 miles rolled it over to 6,008 miles. For the week I ended at 223.15 miles and 958.27 miles for the month. I biked 29 of the 31 days putting this month at the 3rd highest miles of the year. Year to date I biked 8,567 miles. This was the 3rd time this year using today’s route. The last time was on April 25th.

The weather warmed up from yesterday and the wind stayed light. I was back to lighter clothes with shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves. Weather conditions: start 77 (humidity 35%, dew point 47), fair, wind E 9 mph; finish 78 (humidity 34%, dew point 48), fair, wind SE 6 mph. Starting at 1:44 PM and finishing at 3:45 PM put me in the warmer part of the day.

Looks like I achieved 10 top results in Strava. Not bad for the last day of the month. Click on the image to see all of them.

Mayor Don Warren, other city officials test out cycling lanes with Tyler Bicycle Club members

By Zak Wellerman | tylerpaper.com

On a brisk Saturday morning, Tyler Mayor Don Warren and several city employees joined Tyler Bicycle Club members to test out the 36.6 miles of recently installed bike lanes across the city.

Suited up with a neon helmet, Warren said the best thing the lanes provide is connectivity between the universities, schools, downtown and the hospitals.

“It’s just connectivity throughout the entire city, which is something we’re very proud of,” he said.

Saturday’s ride began behind ETX Brewing Co. in downtown Tyler and the round trip was …

6 cyclists injured after being struck by car in Liberty Co.

LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Multiple people were reportedly injured after being hit by a vehicle while they rode bicycles in Liberty County Saturday morning.

According to Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, six cyclists were hit as they traveled eastbound on Highway 787 at about 11 a.m.

The six cyclists were participating in an annual ride from San Diego, California to St. Augustine, Florida when what authorities believe to be a Ford Focus struck the line of cyclists, according to Sheriff’s Patrol Cpl James W. McQueen.

2021-10-29: Marathon to Sanderson

Friday October 29, 2021, 55 miles (89 km) – Total so far: 1,236 miles (1,989 km) The morning started very cold. According to my neighbor, who has a thermometer, it was 38F. Packing up the tent took a lot of time and I was on my way at 10. At least, the wind was calm and I really enjoyed my alone time in the desert.

I posted a picture I thought was Agave lechuguilla, the indicator plant of ChiHuaHuan desert. It was not. So I intended to find the right plant. Unfortunately there weren’t many Agaves to be found. I was lucky to find two agave plants. But I don’t know if I find the right one.

About 10 miles before the camp ground, I got a flat. After determining it’s a slow leak, I pumped the tire every 3-4 miles till I reached the camp ground. …
