About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Waited Until 48 Became 73 Since I’m A Wimp

Texbiker.net Posted on October 18, 2021 by Rick AnkrumOctober 18, 2021

The cool overnight temperatures continued with a chilly 48 degrees when I got out of bed this morning. It took several hours after that to warm up to the mid 70’s slowing the start of the bike ride to 11:38 AM. I am a temperature wimp. To offset the chill I wore a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve jersey. Riding in the shade remind me of the chill from overnight. The beautiful blue sky and ample sunshine helped to warm me as well as pedaling the Canyon Endurace bike. The “Kingwood – SH 242 Kingwood” route took me north and then back to the south covering 36.45 miles. This brought me within 92 miles of reaching my 625 mile goal for October. If the weather holds to the forecast I should reach that goal this week. Over the course of 2021 I biked this route 9 times. The distance for those times are consistently 35 to 36 miles. I did ride on some different streets in Tavola for this route.

10-18-2021 YTD Bike Rides Summary for this Route

The average speed is consistent for the rides. Today the max average speed was 14.0 mph until I was riding in Kings Manor with about 4 miles left. The wind was light which helps the average speed.

Weather summary: start 73 (43% humidity, 49 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 5 mph; finish 74 (43% humidity, 50 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 7 mph.

Day 29: Austin to La Grange. 3,000’ of climbing, 6:50 hrs in the saddle. A long ride to the town made famous by ZZ Top

Sunday October 17, 2021, 83 miles (134 km) – Total so far: 1,471 miles (2,367 km) Took us a while to navigate our way out of town, and pretty easy riding till Bastrop. Helped fix a flat right away, the women appreciate the men for at least something. Romaine had a wreck and broke a small bone in her hand so is out till she can seek better medical attention. Rode through Bastop and Buecher state parks which were great, no traffic, good roads, except a lot of steep climbs. …

Pedaling For Body Heat To Offset Chilly Temperature

Texbiker.net Posted on October 17, 2021 by Rick AnkrumOctober 17, 2021

Waiting until after church to ride today I thought the temperature would warm up some but not the case. Wheels on my Lynskey R300 bike rolled at 1:48 PM with 71 degrees and partly cloudy. Thankfully the wind was light at 4 mph or I would’ve probably returned home to get a long sleeve jersey. I’m not ready for cool weather. I needed 25 miles to hit 200 for the week and biked 28.69 miles so that was taken care of. This makes 2 weeks in a row at 200+. I’m getting closer to my 625 mile goal for October with 497.33 miles so far. When I finished the ride at 3:56 PM the clouds had increased some blocking more of the sun and the temperature was only 72. Pedaling upped my body heat to offset the coolness.

Today’s route is a 2021 creation. Before that I didn’t ride it. I didn’t realize I rode it 10 times. Not all of them include the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway because I didn’t find it until recently, the last couple of months maybe.

Day 27: Johnson City to Austin, 2317’ of climbing, 2:30hrs in the saddle. The longest short day yet

Friday October 15, 2021, 30 miles (48 km) – Total so far: 1,388 miles (2,234 km) The day started off as normal, rolling hills in the county side. Maddie had another flat (her 7th) on this trip! We all stopped to help her. Had a pinch flat which is rare, rim liner had slipped. We were warned about a low spot where the water ran over the road. It was right before a big downhill so I was going too fast when I hit the wet pavement and started to slide before getting under control. …

Day 28: layover day in Austin

Saturday October 16, 2021 I had a great day off. Slept in, walked to Denny’s for a real breakfast and to the Texas football stadium. Oklahoma State University, my alma mater, was playing today. Walked through all the crowds to find the ticket booth, very slow. While standing there, an older man asked if I needed tickets. He said he great seats for $75. I was Leary of him but went for it. As we walked in, he seemed to know everyone at every turn. He told me he …

Beautiful and treacherous course. Feel horrible I quit before the 3rd loop. Was pitch black and got pretty cold in the mountains. I would of finished around 4am. There’s some tough cookies here.

That was horrifying
