About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Community mourns family man, avid cyclist killed in Fort Worth hit-and-run

By Amelia Mugavero | www.cbsnews.com

FORT WORTH — The Fort Worth community is mourning the death of a man, killed in a hit-and-run crash while riding his bike.

The incident happened in East Fort Worth near Gateway Park over the weekend off East First Street. The family said Dan Frost rode his bike down the same path nearly every day and said they were making Mother’s Day plans when they found out he died.

“One of my dad’s sayings was he felt ‘closest to God when he was on that bike.’ It breaks our heart, but I’ve been comforting my mom and my sisters by telling them that he went from feeling as close to God as he ever felt in life when he died,” said Dan Frost’s eldest son, Garrison. …

Mid-Spring Mileage: Progressing Towards a 749-Mile Goal

Texbiker.net Posted on May 14, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMay 14, 2024

I rode south and east to Spanish Cove Drive but not on all of the usual streets on the Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route. Waiting until stage 10 of the Giro d’Italia finished pushed the start time to 11:22 AM. That was time enough for the temperature to get out of the 60’s to mid 70’s. My Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike carried me over the different streets. In Huffman the Amtrak Sunset Limited train and I arrived at the same time. I biked 36.74 miles, about average for the previous 10 bike rides this year. I am now ahead of the 25 miles per day average to reach my May goal of 749 miles with 360.7 miles (48% of the goal).

Weather: Start 76 degrees, humidity 84%, dew point 70.9, 16% cloud cover, wind WNW 7 mph gusts 9 mph; Finish 84 degrees, humidity 57%, dew point 67.6, 4% cloud cover, wind NW 10 mph gusts 16 mph.

Texas Ride of Silence: Share the Road Spotlight

Rudy Fernandez | 1470kyyw.com

When I first heard the term “Ride of Silence” I didn’t know what it was about. However, I learned from Jill Christie with the Texas Department of Transportation what the ride is all about.

So here goes, after a nationally known amateur cyclist named Larry Schwartz had been killed when he was riding his bicycle and was hit by a school bus on a wide-open empty road. The first Ride of Silence occurred in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. LOOK: This Is Abilene’s Ride of Silence Abilene’s cyclists gather to remember those who lost their lives while cycling. Connecting Texas with a statewide active transportation plan

www.txdot.gov

AUSTIN—Active transportation is an important link in the Texas transportation system connecting travelers across the state. TxDOT is developing the Statewide Active Transportation Plan to develop recommendations for improving conditions for bicycling, walking and rolling across the state.

Safe active transportation networks not only connect people to destinations, but can also improve individual health, enhance local economies and provide choices that can save people money and improve their quality of life.

The SATP focuses on community needs to identify priority areas and make connections with trails, paths, and transit to help provide safe and efficient ways to get around for people using all transportation choices. Specific strategies identified through the plan will inform TxDOT’s efforts to support travel options in the future.

In the fall of 2023, TxDOT held virtual meetings and traveled across the state to meet with and gather input from more than 4,800 people, stakeholders and other groups to shape the SATP. Through this outreach, people were encouraged to provide input on their top priorities when it comes to active transportation. Common themes included:

Increased safety. Almost 75% of those surveyed don’t feel safe using active transportation. They want to see lower speed limits and additional lighting on sidewalks and bike lanes. ...

Early Start, Back Before The Rain, No Tire Event

Texbiker.net Posted on May 13, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMay 13, 2024

A Giro d’Italia rest day meant no delay in starting the bike ride. The route headed north to Roman Forest Blvd. making a u-turn under US59 through Tavola West, back to US59, riding Valley Ranch Parkway to FM1314. Briar Tree and Oakhurst were next, Northpark Drive and Kingwood Place and onto US59. I label this my New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst route. Over the last 12 months I rode the route 8 times before today. The average distance is 34.5 miles but today I biked 35.14 miles. I took the longer loop through Brooklyn Trails and checked on a bike rodeo in the Randall Reed Stadium parking lot by Valley Ranch Parkway accounting for the extra distance. I rolled away on my Cervelo Caledonia bike at 9:42 AM, much earlier for a weekday ride. I finished at 12:25 PM in front of rain expected to arrive around 2 PM. The photos are from the West Tavola entrance.
