About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike Rodeo

Michelle Adams | www.southtexasnews.com

The San Antonio River Authority is revving up for the summer and encouraging locals to have some outdoor adventure by exploring bike trails across Bexar, Wilson, Goliad and Karnes Counties.

Escondido Creek Parkway in Kenedy was highlighted as one of the three bike trails in the SARA parks.

SARA highlighted Escondido Creek Parkway (ECP) describing it as “an attractive, linear nature-based park.” The paved trails consist of a 1.15-mile loop. In addition to this, there are other park amenities including a skate park, horned toad habitat, a playground, a pavilion, and a splash pad. …

Bun B makes appearance at MacGregor Park for the Art Bike Parade

By Andrew Dansby | www.houstonchronicle.com

Rapper, burger businessman and beloved Houston institution Bun B took the stage at the third annual Art Bike Parade and Festival at MacGregor Park and looked up at the sky.

“It’s not hot,” he said. “It’s not raining . . . yet. You know Houston: We can get three seasons in one day.”

But the rain held off Saturday, and the event pulled in a strong crowd of people and their customized bicycles on a pleasant mid-May day. …

Video: Memorial ride held in honor of 8-year-old boy hit by truck in Pharr

www.krgv.com

More than 40 cyclists hit the road to honor a life taken too soon.

They rode over a mile to honor 8-year-old Caleb Ramirez, who died in April while riding his bike after he was hit by a driver.

“It’s an honor, it’s an honor, extremely grateful for all the support the community has given,” Caleb’s mother, Sonia Hernandez said.

The cyclists ended their ride on East Eller Avenue, where Caleb was hit by a truck right in front of his home in Pharr.

“It’s an emptiness and numbness,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez is feeling hollow as she heads into her first Mother’s Day without her 8-year-old son. …

By Priscilla Aguirre | www.mysanantonio.com

Here’s what we know about the tree sanctuary.

The planning process for Arboretum San Antonio is underway. The group dedicated to turning an old golf course into a massive green space filled with trees announced its master planning firm during a press conference on Wednesday, May 8.

Design firm Sasaki and a team of local experts will lead the mission to create the 188-acre tree sanctuary on the land of the former Republic Golf Course on the city’s Southeast Side. Arboretum San Antonio will feature pedestrian and bicycle trails, a nursery to propagate native trees, nature-based programming for all ages, event spaces, and public art displays.

Ride2Recovery: Making a difference in the lives of injured Soldiers

Col. Bill Hill | cavazossentinel.com

The Ride2Recovery program focuses on helping injured Soldiers navigate through the challenges in their lives, as a result of an injuries. Some injuries are visible and some more subtle. Last week, I had the privilege to ride and participate in one leg of the six-day bike ride from San Antonio to Arlington.

The ride, and my participation with our wounded warriors and the incredible volunteers that made the program possible, was one of the most inspiring events that I have every participated in during my 26-year military career.

I first want to describe some of the experiences, and more importantly, challenge you to think about participating next year.

Last Wednesday, I arrived in Austin the night before the ride from Austin to Fort Hood, and …

Front Tire Saga, New Section Atascocita Hike & Bike Trail, Another Flat

Texbiker.net Posted on May 11, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMay 11, 2024

Preparing for today’s bike ride I performed a tire inspection on the Cervelo Caledonia, the bike I planned on riding. No problems on the rear tire. The front tire sidewall cut from Thursday showed the black patch protruding. I thought a boot cut from an old tire might solve that but after inserting it the cut looked big enough to replace the tire. Replacing the tire with a new Continental GatorSkin 700x28mm I checked my maintenance records to see how many miles it had. Originally installed as a rear tire on 3/3/2023 at 6213 miles meant the tire had 4600 miles. Without the cut sidewall it could’ve lasted another 2000. The Cervelo was ready to ride now.

I rolled away at 9:20 AM on the Cervelo to ride the Atascocita – Huffman – Walden route like I do on many Saturdays. Hopefully I wasn’t too late to see other cyclists. It turned out I wasn’t too late with other cyclists passing on FM1960 over Lake Houston and Fairlake Lane. On the way back to Kingwood there were 3 cyclists at Donald’s Donuts when I stopped for a glazed donut myself.

I rode towards Walden and stopped on Pine Echo Drive because the blooms on these trees looked beautiful.

Continuing through Walden at Farmingham Road I turned left to see if the Atascocita Hike and Bike Trail connected. I found it by the church and rode from Farmingham to W. Lake Houston Parkway. The trail looked new with some places waiting for grass sod to arrive. The video shows the trail. This new section goes under FM1960. Under FM1960 the recent flooding left mud on the trail and my rear tire slipped as I pedaled the incline up. Flood debris hung on the railing under the bridge. I will ride this trail now that I know about it.

Biking back into Kingwood north of the river the front tire didn’t feel as firm. Before crossing Kingwood Drive I squeezed it, softer than when I started. I altered the rest of the route to get back home before it went flat. I finished at 11:58 AM. Before inspecting the flat I finished watching stage 8 of the Giro d’Italia. I pulled the tube out expecting the Thursday patch to be the culprit but it wasn’t. A pin hole about 15″ away from that patch was the problem. Running my fingers around the inside of the tire didn’t find the cause so I will chalk it up to pinching the tube when I put the new tire on. I patched the TPU tube and put it back in the tire. Hopefully this fixes the front tire for many miles.

Mepham graduate turned Baylor student to take on cross-country bike ride with fraternity

By Jordan Vallone | www.liherald.com

Not everyone can say they’re planning on driving across the United States in a car — and far less can say they’re making the journey on two wheels, instead of four.

Nicholas Zuzzolo, 21, of Bellmore, is preparing to do just that. A 2021 graduate of Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, he will be making a cross-country trip on bike next month, alongside dozens of other young men his age, while taking part in a “Journey of Hope,” through the Ability Experience.

The Ability Experience is a philanthropic initiative of Pi Kappa Phi, the fraternity that Zuzzolo is a member of at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. The philanthropy was founded in 1977, and strives to …
