About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Risky bike path on downtown bridge finally opens and more Dallas news

By Teresa Gubbins | dallas.culturemap.com

In this week’s roundup of Dallas news, a high-profile bike lane was officially opened. A master plan was adopted to take care of trees in Dallas. Beto was in town. And you can get vaccinated for free this weekend.

Here’s what happened in Dallas this week:

High-profile bike path A bicycle path on the Margaret McDermott Bridge in Dallas was officially opened to pedestrians and bike riders on Thursday. It’s one of two Dallas bridges designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, and is opening four years after the bridge opened to motorists because it was not safe enough for bicyclists or pedestrians to use. The Dallas City Council had to allocate $7 million to replace the bridge’s cable anchor system. It’ll cost taxpayers $400,000 a year to maintain.

Adding bicycle and pedestrian lanes helped get federal funding for …

From tracks to trail: A look back at The Katy

By Meagan Hurley | www.dallasnews.com

At one time, it was used for a railroad and passenger trains.

Most people today hear “Katy Trail” and think of the often-crowded running and biking trail that cuts through the Uptown neighborhood of Dallas.

However, there are some Dallasites who remember when the trail wasn’t a trail at all — it was railroad tracks. For more than a century, trains with names like the Katy Flyer and the Texas Special carried people and products down the very same path that many locals still use today, just in a different way.

We took a journey through our archives to find the stories that tell the long history of the Katy — from train to trail. Early, prosperous years

The Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad —often shortened to “K-T,” which led to the …

Biking The Lucy Park Tall Grass On Way To Original Wichita Falls

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

Feeling the need for green shade my mechanized motion device drove me and my bike back to Lucy Park, again.

The unpaved loop, part of which you see above, is a bit rough, but enjoyable, except for a muddy section or two.

That and being wary of the possibility a snake might suddenly appear.

This late into Spring it seems surprising the green has not turned more brown. That and I wondered if the tall grass, at least six feet tall, is of the sort which used …

These Fort Worth volunteers are finding new homes for old bikes. Here’s where to get one

By Haeven Gibbons | www.star-telegram.com

In the parking lot of New Riverside United Methodist Church, a 20-foot shipping container is packed floor to ceiling with donated and discarded bikes. Tools line the walls, brakes squeal, an air pump drones. On this summer afternoon, Daniel Guido is hard at work repairing bikes for the Carter-Riverside neighborhood.

Guido’s Neighborhood Bike Shop-in-a-Box provides free repairs and bikes for anyone in the community who wants wheels.

“It means a lot,” said one of Guido’s customers. “Since I was little my dad would get us bikes and we would go a little bit around the neighborhood, ride around a little bit, and …

3 Races And My Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 10, 2021 by Rick AnkrumJune 10, 2021

I had to be creative to watch 3 bike races at the same time this morning before starting my bike ride. Flobikes on my Roku showed the Tour de Suisse on a TV, with GCN+ on my Acer Chromebook Spin 713 replaying the Tour of Slovenia and then I jumped to the Belgium Tour. A busy morning.

My bike ride started at 10:54 AM as I rode away on my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike. The route for today followed “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” but I didn’t really ride through Huffman. Returning from Ramsey Road at FM 2100 I continued west on Old Atascocita Road instead of going north on FM 2100 to Huffman. I finished at 1:54 PM. This was the 3rd time biking this route in 2021.

Progress on getting to a 200 mile week. I rode 37.15 miles today improving the week to 149.97 miles. June stands at 353.46 miles, 44% of the way to my 800 mile goal. I am registered for a 62 mile ride on Saturday. That would put me at 200+ miles for the week.

With the weather getting warmer I decided to wear a new pair of arm sleeves I bought earlier this year from Academy Sports. Watch the video to see more of the sleeves. They take the place of sunscreen and keep sweat from running down my arms. They actually feel cool.

  • 6-10-2021 BCG Blue Arm Sleeves-1
  • 6-10-2021 BCG Blue Arm Sleeves-2

What the weather was like during the bike ride: start 87 (69% humidity, 75.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph; finish 89 (65% humidity, 76 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 12 mph. The wind wasn’t too bad. When made a short stop at the Ramsey Road bridge standing in the shade felt cooling as the wind blew.

Looking at the Golden Cheetah summary data my power zone breakdown for zones 1 and 2 are higher than I prefer at 60% of the riding time. I need to get it below 50%.

TxDOT Seeking Public Input on Early Plans For Dallas I-30 Corridor Project

By Claire Cardona | www.nbcdfw.com

The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking public comment on the early phase of a proposed plan to reconstruct a 4.4-mile portion of Interstate 30 East.

The scope of the massive project includes widening and reconstructing I-30 East from Interstate 345 and Interstate 45 to Ferguson Road — the portion of freeway that bisects parts of Deep Ellum, East Dallas, Fair Park, South Dallas and Pleasant Grove.

The proposal, which TxDOT shared Tuesday in a virtual presentation, would include adding a fifth lane in each direction and depressing the main and managed lanes below ground level from I-345/I-45 to Dolphin Road. It would also include reconstruction of ramps and bridges, a second reversible managed lane and accommodations for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. …

Video: Treat of the Day: UT students and alumni bike across the country to support cancer research

By Grace Leis | www.kbtx.com

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Current and former students from the University of Texas hit the road early Tuesday morning to continue their travel for Texas 4000.

The group of 19 will bike ride all summer long to raise money for cancer research and promote awareness. 85 people are spending the summer cycling more than 4,000 miles across the country.

The group’s next stop is Houston, then will eventually head up to the Midwest and the East Coast before coming back to Austin.

The local Brazos Valley Texas Exes Chapter hosted the team last night with a meal and in area homes before they set out this morning.

Texas 4000 participants travel through Bryan-College Station

By CHELSEA KATZ | theeagle.com

University of Texas students who are part of the Texas 4000 cycling program stopped in Bryan and College Station for a night as their 4,000-mile journey through the eastern United States got underway.

Typically, the ride — which is in memory and in support of those battling cancer — would take the cyclists from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska, but this year’s routes are limited because the Canadian border is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Texas 4000 rider and recent UT graduate Karen Liu said. Last year’s physical summer ride was canceled due to the pandemic.

All riders were required to…

‘It’s just patience at this point’: El Paso cycling business adapts as pandemic bike shortage continues

By Madeline Ottilie | kvia.com

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — It has been just about a year since bike shops nationwide saw shelves cleared and inventory drop. Now, some business owners say shortages still have not stopped.

U.S. Census data shows more Americans have been riding bikes during the pandemic too and prices have gone up. Researchers cite increased popularity and limited supply.

Roberto Barrio, the owner of El Paso’s Crazy Cat Cyclery shop, said his store has had difficulty securing accessories and parts for repairs and service. New bikes, he said, are just trickling in.

“If they’re not on a waiting list then they’re going to be waiting til there’s open inventory,” Barrio said. “I think that’s going to …
