I decided to ride to the north following my “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. Monday I rode to the north and got caught in heavy rain. Looking at the weather radar no rain showed but the forecast listed rain. I hoped to get back without getting wet again. I watched two bike races before starting today’s bike ride: Vuelta a Andalucia – Ruta del Sol and the Giro d’Italia. I missed biking the last two days because of rain so I wanted to ride today.
This was the 7th time riding this route in 2021. I biked 4 times on the Canyon Endurace and 3 times on the Lynskey R300.
Starting at 10:59 AM riding my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike the temperature was 79 under a mostly cloudy sky. Wind was from the east at 9 mph not posing much of a problem while I biked to the north. Before leaving I checked the weather forecast and the chance of rain increased to 75% around 2 PM. I thought I would be back before that. I finished the ride at 1:36 PM.
There was an opportunity to stop at Pat’s Donuts in Porter on the way back to Kingwood for an apple fritter. I made good time and got to Pat’s about 12:50 PM, 10 minutes before they closed. But no apple fritters and no blueberry cake donuts so no snack to fuel the rest of the ride home.
That turned out to be somewhat of a blessing. If they had an apple fritter or the cake donuts I would’ve taken time to eat before continuing the bike ride. As I got closer to Kingwood the sky to the southeast looked threatening. Once I was back in Kingwood I felt a few sprinkles and around 3 miles from home light rain began. If I had stayed at Pat’s the rain might have moved closer to me and instead of 3 miles in the rain it might have longer. The big difference in today’s rain versus Monday, no lightning today and I was much closer to home. The last 3 miles I got soaked but not too gritty. I will wipe down the Canyon after it drys.
Today’s ride covered 35.98 miles, improving the week to 87.7 miles. No 200 miles this week. May totals 569.3 miles versus my 660 mile goal for the month. Here is how 2021 YTD miles stacks up to previous years. (This includes road and Zwift miles)
Thanks to more trails, better bikes and a rise of high-school interest, mountain biking has experienced a meteoric rise of popularity in the past decade. The pandemic added fuel to the fire.
Last summer, Cat Rainwater was overweight and going through menopause at an accelerated clip. That, on top of the stresses of pandemic lockdown, was leading to a mental health crisis.
“I was suicidal,†said Ms. Rainwater, 49, a mortgage underwriter based in Austin, Texas. “My sister was taking care of me and she said, ‘We have got to get you active.’â€
She started trail running, until she injured her knee.
“Meanwhile, all of these mountain bikers were just whizzing past me,†Ms. Rainwater said. “I found the bike community and it’s been …

Back in November 2019 I wrote a post called The Bad Side of Good Habits. In it, I considered things that seemed good on the surface but looking deeper there were some negatives. Lately, I’ve been feeling pretty knackered (British English for tired) to the point where I can’t really ignore it. A quick search brings up the word “overtraining†and a host of replies with plenty of debate. As an amateur fathlete bicyclist, I’m not too worried about the semantics. You won’t see me entering any races, breaking any …
Abilene bicyclists joined riders worldwide Wednesday for the Ride of Silence, a short tour locally through the city’s center to remember those who have lost their lives on bicycles.
More than 30 began their route at McMurry University, the first time since 2019 after the global pandemic canceled the ride last spring. Cyclists wore reflective clothing, protective helmets and pedaled in silence as they were escorted by Abilene Police Department officers.
Nine people have died riding bicycles in Taylor and Jones County since 2010, and …

SAN ANTONIO – As members of the bicycling community gathered at a City Council meeting Thursday, it didn’t take long for conversation to turn to how much is left to make San Antonio more bike-friendly.
While the cyclists were present at the meeting for a proclamation on May as National Bike Month and Friday as National Bike to Work Day, council members were quick to acknowledge the dangers those bicyclists face.
“We know that cycling in San Antonio frequently isn’t …

… Crowdsourcing bike traffic data will make roads safer
Building better bike infrastructure in San Antonio starts with knowing where residents and visitors are cycling, Griffin said. "We’re working toward solving the problem of being able to identify where real safety problems are," he added.
Part of Griffin’s research involves crowdsourcing bicycle traffic volumes, using apps like
Strava
and other methods, and he’s published several studies on the subject. This uncovers where bike-related accidents are occurring and where bike traffic is increasing and decreasing.
The research could help the city know which intersections may need to be reconfigured or roadways need bike lanes to adapt to bike traffic. …
This appears to be one of those ‘Damned if you do. Damned if you don’t.’ situations. For several years now Wichita Falls has been working on becoming certified as a Bicycle Friendly City. The latest step in that process was the addition of Shared Use Lanes on some of our streets. You can spot them by the depiction of a bicycle and directional arrow painted on the street surface. …

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The annual Ride of Silence, which honors cyclists who’ve been injured or killed, has become even more important in 2021 after a deadly 2020 for cyclists in Texas. Plus, the pandemic popularity of bikes has put more on the road.
“Whether it’s for exercise or whether it’s to avoid public transportation, those cyclists that are out there are now going to encounter motor vehicles at the normal pre-pandemic levels, and injuries and deaths are going to occur,†Paul Friener, secretary of the West Texas Cycling Association said.
Every year around the globe cyclists …

High school senior Caden Filler said everyone who donated to his fundraiser helped him serve a bus driver who always serves others.
A special bus driver at Keller ISD, who says her calling is to bless every kid who gets on her bus, received a very special surprise from one of the students.
With the help of the community, Keller High School senior Caden Filler was able to raise more than enough money to buy Gail McDaniel a brand new bike, helmet, water bottle, and a gift card for shoes.
"I saw a need and acted on that need, and was able to bless Ms. Gail’s life," Filler said.
