About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Stable But Windy Weather; Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100 Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 18, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMay 18, 2021

Much more stable weather conditions for today’s bike ride. After watching two bike races from Spain I got ready to bike. After yesterday’s drenching I looked forward to a dry if humid bike ride. I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” route and headed off at 11:41 AM riding the Lynskey R300. I hoped a change in bike would compliment a change in the weather. This was the 6th time biking this route in 2021, 3 times on each bike.

This ride covered 33.69 miles moving the total for the week to 51.72 miles. With all of the rain in the forecast I don’t think this will be a 200 mile week. My goal for May is 660 miles and I am at 533.31 miles so far. I’m losing ground YTD in 2021 to YTD 2020 by 93 miles. The bike ride ended at 2:20 PM.

The wind got stronger after I started the bike ride. I worked hard getting to FM 2100 into the headwind but enjoyed a tailwind most of the time returning to Kingwood. Conditions: start 78 (84% humidity, 72.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 13 mph; finish 78 (74% humidity, 69.2 dew point), overcast, wind SE 20 mph. Wednesday forecast calls for a lot of rain which means biking may not happen. The weather at the end of the bike ride. 20 mph wind is not bicycling friendly.

Scientist rides bike across Permian Basin to Austin for climate change awareness

Author: Paul Livengood, Heikki Mustonen | www.kvue.com

AUSTIN, Texas — Editor’s note: The on-air piece was produced by KVUE’s Heikki Mustonen.

On Sunday, May 16, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientist David Goodrich finished his bike ride from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Austin, Texas to bring awareness to climate change.

"Seeing things from a bicycle seat is about as close as you can get. I’m retired climate scientist and also a writer, and I wanted to ride with a sense of what climate looks like from a bicycle seat," Goodrich told KVUE.

Goodrich is an author and Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN), a 20-year-old …

City officials address concerns over new shared bike lanes

by: PJ Green | www.texomashomepage.com

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — In April, city officials finished a project that established shared bike lanes down Call Field Road and Midwestern Parkway. Officials are now responding to some complaints that they have heard in the weeks since. Slowed traffic is one of the main concerns that city officials have heard. But they say this effort to make the city more bike-friendly is going to take time for cyclists and motorists to get used to. The Hotter’N Hell Hundred is one of the largest cycling events in …

Bike Ride to FM1485, I Tossed The Rain Dice and Lost

Texbiker.net Posted on May 17, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMay 17, 2021

I pressed the start button on the Bolt computer at 12:33 PM. The sky was dark in places but the radar showed the rain was not near even though I heard light rain on the patio cover. I chose a route to the north and set out on my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike.

No rain but the streets were damp until I crossed FM 1314 where the road turned wet. The clouds looked threatening to the west but I continued on the route. At the Valero station on Loop 494 I made a quick switch to find cover from the rain. I waited there for at least 20 minutes until the rain slowed. Next I stopped at Buster Brown Propane in New Caney to get some information. The roads dried some but the dark clouds moved closer. I planned on riding my “Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood” route and headed to the frontage road and over Caney Creek. I made the u-turn under US59 and rode south towards FM 1485 and the rain started. I took shelter at the US59 and FM 1485 overpass. I don’t remember how long I waited for the rain to slow but while I waited the thunder and lightning picked up.

Finally the rain slowed, I headed south on the frontage road to Valley Ranch Parkway with more thunder but no rain but as I passed the New Caney ISD football stadium the rain came down. I lifted the Canyon over the chain blocking the parking lot entrance and found a dry place at the ticket booth. More waiting while the rain came down. It slowed and I set off to my next goal, the Grand Parkway overpass at Valley Ranch.

When I got there the rain came down again. I rode through the traffic light to get under the overpass and out of the rain. That was as far as I rode. I waited and waited for the rain to slow but it never happened. I started thinking of ways to get home but none looked good. Finally around 4:05 PM a lady stopped and asked if I needed a ride home. I said yest, I loaded the Canyon in the back of her large pickup and thanked her many times. Getting home wasn’t easy with the rain, flashing traffic lights and lots of traffic.

Soaked and gritty I walked the Canyon up the driveway and got inside out of the rain. I tossed the rain dice and lost.

As more riders hit the trails, biking etiquette, education becomes vital

by: Elvia Navarrete | www.ktsm.com

El Paso, Texas (KTSM) — The pandemic has caused many people stuck at home to start looking elsewhere for adventure.

With El Paso having the largest urban park in the U.S. — Franklin Mountains State Park — mountain bikers from beginners to advanced have hit the trails. That means more biking traffic.

Manny Arellano, president of newly formed non-profit Mountain Action Sports El Paso, said he sees a need for more biking education within the city of El Paso.

“We felt there was a gap that …

High school students ride for mental health at Wellness on Wheels event

Emma Balter | www.houstonchronicle.com

Riders leave the parking lot as they begin this year’s Communities in Schools “Wellness On Wheels” bike ride, part of Mental Health Awareness Week, beginning at Mibly High School Saturday, May. 15, 2021 in Houston, TX. Over 40 riders participated in the ride, which included teens and city leaders.

Rene Gonzalez stood in front of the pack of about 40 cyclists Saturday morning, feet in pedals, ready to lead a 12-mile ride across the East End.

Gonzalez created Wellness on Wheels in 2020 to improve student mental health at Milby High School, where he works as student support manager for Communities in Schools, a non-profit that provides students mental health services, dropout prevention and other resources.

An avid cyclist himself, Gonzalez believes biking can be a great complement to …
