About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Dialed The Mileage Back Today. New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch

Texbiker.net Posted on May 8, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMay 8, 2024

I dialed the mileage back on today’s bike ride but almost rode 40 miles. It’s Wednesday which meant biking north. I chose the New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch route. This was the 4th time biking this route in 2024 and the longest distance at 38.55 miles. The previous bike ride was April 24th covering 37.9 miles. I rode my Lynskey Helix bike today and on the previous ride too. I’m now 17 miles short of the pace needed to reach May’s goal: 183 versus 200 month to date. The week’s mileage is 128.94.

TxDOT’s Beaumont district is proposing a 23 mile long U.S. 69 relief route

By Megan Zapalac | www.beaumontenterprise.com

The growing number of people in Hardin and adjacent counties has necessitated the creation of a new south-north evacuation route.

The Texas Department of Transportation’s Beaumont District is proposing a 23-mile U.S. 69 evacuation route from Cooks Lake Road, south of Lumberton, to Farm Road 420, north of Kountze in Hardin County, according to the TxDOT website.

In addition to providing a relief evacuation route, the project also is expected to make the roads safer by giving lessening congestion on the existing U.S. 69, according to TxDOT Public Information Officer Tanya Avila.

The two 12-foot lanes in each direction, in addition to a 13-foot northbound shoulder to act as an evacuation lane and a 10-foot southbound shoulder, will require TxDOT to acquire 345 feet of additional property, Avila said.

The road will also have a two-lane frontage road in each direction with parking for trucks, bicycles and pedestrians, according to the website. …

Salt-Stained Triumph: A Cyclist’s Tale of Resilience

Texbiker.net Posted on May 7, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMay 7, 2024

I’m still in catch up mode. Back to back 45 mile bike rides gets me closer to my May goal. Today I rode the Kingwood – Stroker Road – Kingwood route for 44.9 miles (I rounded up to 45 miles). An earlier start at 10:36 AM got me back home at 2:06 PM thanks to stage 4 of the Giro d’Italia finishing earlier than yesterday. I biked through some areas that flooded on Saturday cutting that bike ride short. Aboard my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike I crossed Lake Houston which was higher than normal but not flood level though the Lake Houston Brewery restaurant on the east shore looked like water entered the building. Lots of cloud cover today making me think it wasn’t as hot as it really was. I wore black and at the end of the ride salt stains adorned my kit. The hardest part of the ride was going south on Ramsey Road into what felt like a strong headwind. I shifted to the 35×15 gears when my legs had trouble turning the cranks with the 35×13 gears. Riding south on W. Lake Houston Parkway over the San Jacinto river there was a group of City of Houston Public Works vehicles on the northbound side. They may have been looking for damage from the high water. during Hurricane Harvey the bridge suffered some damage to the pads the beams rest on.

Ride history on the route.

Video: Bike ride across border promotes equitable and sustainable access to transportation

www.kgns.tv

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – Donated bikes are being given new life on the other side of the border.

Both Mexican and U.S. consulates, along with Working Bikes—a Chicago organization that donates and redistributes bikes—and the World Bicycle Forum, helped organize a bike ride across Bridge 1.

The bike ride helped give these bikes another life in an attempt to help what the World Bike Forum calls an initiative to “democratize access to more fair and equitable mobility for Mexico and Latin America.”

During Monday’s ceremony, officials say the event helps draw the two countries closer. …

The Orange Show’s Ever-Quirky Art Bike Parade Is Back

By Meredith Nudo | www.houstoniamag.com

Here’s everything you need to know before heading out to the Orange Show’s quirky parade on May 11.

Every April, Houstonians come together to celebrate the city’s rich history of art cars. While the Houston Art Car Parade is among the most popular attractions, the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, which produces the annual event, has expanded the concept further into art bikes. Now in its third year, the Houston Art Bike Parade and Festival uplifts what Jonathan Beitler, the Orange Show’s director of communications and special events, refers to as “human-powered art on wheels.”

“We really are seeing the art bike parade as a community celebration,” he says. “It’s a day for people to get out and experience and use parks, be creative, and use …

Video: What do the goats on Austin’s Hike-and-Bike Trail do?

by: Abigail Jones | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin’s cutest lawn mowers have returned to the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail.

The goats are back to work cleaning up vegetation and poison ivy near the trail along Lady Bird Lake.

It’s not the first time the goats have worked on the trail.

The Trail Conservancy started the goat program in 2023 to clear harmful plants, such as poison ivy, along the lakeside trail. They munch on noxious and invasive plants along the trail in groups of about 150, according to the nonprofit. …
