About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Carlsbad, NM – Orla, TX: Into the Permian

Tuesday May 4, 2021, 48 miles (78 km) – Total so far: 392 miles (630 km) Today was a little hard at the start. Concetta and Lynn packed up and headed north to catch their plane out of Santa Fe. I rolled south into Texas to do the last 465 miles on my own. Hope I’ve got everything together.

This is oil and gas country, the northern stretch of the Permian Basin. Into dry, dusty country, there is always as least on gas flare in sight, with tanks, pumpjacks, and transport vehicles. On the main road, traffic is virtually all trucks. …

Northaven Trail Pedestrian Bridge Over US 75 Will Link Disconnected Neighborhoods

By Alex Macon | www.dmagazine.com

An expansion over the highway will link the North Dallas trail to the White Rock Creek, Cottonwood, and SoPac trails on the east side of Central.

Dallas’ trail system is about to get a little more connected. On Saturday, crews will break ground on a bicycle and pedestrian bridge—spanning U.S. 75 just north of Royal Lane in North Dallas—to connect Northaven Trail to trails east of the highway, including White Rock Creek and Cottonwood Creek. The half-mile expansion of the Northaven Trail, which the Texas Department of Transportation is building with a $9.3 million price tag, is expected to open by spring 2023.

“This bridge really will bring neighborhoods closer together,” says …

Rest In Peace Jim Turley

Jim Turley, retired Associate Professor of the School of Biomedical Informatics at UT’s Health Sciences Center at Houston, was killed April 18th after being hit by a vehicle while bicycling in Houston. Jim was an avid cyclist and my good friend. For the last 25 years, I joined him and his flock of fellow cyclists who rode Houston’s streets and emerging bike paths every weekend and holiday. I cannot remember who inaugurated the bike rides from Stella Link and Braeswood, but Jim …

Yesterday Rain Altered My May Plan, Brilliant Blue Sky Today To Make Up

Texbiker.net Posted on May 5, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMay 5, 2021

I had hoped to bike every day in May but that evaporated with yesterday’s noontime rain storm as I stood dressed to leave on a bike ride. To make up for the lost miles I added a few miles to a route and came up with the “Kingwood to Peters Road – Kingwood” route biking 41.06 miles. So far this week both rides are over 41 miles and I plan on keeping that alive with tomorrow’s bike ride. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike today rolling its odometer to 3,958 miles. That is way behind my Canyon Endurace’s almost 22,000 miles. YTD 2021 miles trails 2020 YTD by 63 miles so the missed ride didn’t put me too far behind.

Before each ride I spin up the speed, cadence, and power sensors. The cadence sensor didn’t respond and when I checked the battery it was almost dead. I replaced it and started the ride. But during the ride cadence wasn’t consistent. At the 9 mile point I stopped and found the case wasn’t snapped on all the way. After that no more issues.

On Old Atascocita Road I saw 2 other cyclists headed my way. At the church on Fairlake Lane I saw 2 cars, one with a bike rack, and figured these 2 probably go with the cars. When i returned by the church the cars were gone.

With gorgeous weather I stopped at Peters Road and Ramsey Road and took these photos.

Weather for the bike ride: start 70 (68% humidity, 58.8 dew point), fair, wind N 7 mph; finish 77 (55% humidity, 60 dew point), fair, wind N 7 mph. I knew it would warm up during the bike ride and dressed with shorts, a long sleeve jersey with a short sleeve jersey on top. I was a little chilly at the start but once I warmed up I was comfortable.

No strong wind like Monday’s bike ride allowing me to set a good pace.

Possum Pedal Bike Ride Interview

wheelbrothers.com

The Possum Pedal bike ride takes you back in time when life was a little slower and everyone greeted you with a smile. This year the ride consists of six different routes to choose from all traveling throughout Young and Jack Counties.

I spoke with Lisa Lisa Kinkead, Manager at the Graham Chamber of Commerce, about the event.

As a cyclist, why join Possum Pedal?
Possum Pedal has some of the most scenic routes in Texas. The ride is fully supported and runs seamlessly. We strive to choose routes with varied scenery, some hills, and some flats, to challenge every skill level. The setting of our ride is on the Northern edge of the hill country and along the original Goodnight-Loving cattle drive trail. You can enjoy history, beautiful scenery, and great companionship throughout the ride. It also ...

Windy Graveling this morning.
But still fun. Great to see the plants coming to life and blooming after that brief rain this weekend. #alwaysagooddaytoride #gravelbike #cycling @ Upper Valley, El Paso https://t.co/6491YboCf5

E-bike advocates lobby Woodlands for pathway access

Jeff Forward | www.houstonchronicle.com

Advocates of electric bicycles, stand-up scooters and skateboard-like vehicles want The Woodlands to change a policy that bans motorized vehicles on the more than 200 miles of walking and bicycling paths.

Two men spoke about “e-bikes” at the last two meetings of the township Board of Directors, telling directors that the ban on the electrical vehicles was unfair and needed to be changed. …

Steve & Barry’s Ride Across America – Stage 4 (Section 5)

By Steve Elsesser | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 10 – Ride (6) – DeRidder, LA to MeMom’s Country Store, TX: 2 Milestones and other fun stuff

Sunday April 25, 2021, 47 miles (76 km) – Total so far: 221 miles (356 km) This morning we were back to absolutely perfect riding conditions!

On the way to our starting point, we passed the point on our route where we turn off of US190. There were signs saying the road was closed. So, naturally, we went to see. Six miles later we found high water. It looked passable (on a bike), so we turned around and went to the scheduled starting point in DeRidder.

As we were getting ready, we met a very nice lady named Susan. She also was a …

Day 11 – Ride (7) – MeMom’s Country Store, TX to Honey Island, TX

Monday April 26, 2021, 44 miles (70 km) – Total so far: 264 miles (426 km) Today was our last day in the middle portion of the Stage. We were once again blessed with great weather and (for the most part) pretty good roads.

After riding through the flooded road yesterday, I got up early to re-lube my bike, repair the punctured tube from yesterday’s flat and prepare for today’s ride.

We left the campground just after …

Days 12 & 13 – Move/Rest and Ride (8) – Honey Island, TX to Shepherd, TX

Wednesday April 28, 2021, 41 miles (66 km) – Total so far: 305 miles (492 km) Another day without rain – but it’s coming! In the meantime, Ride (8) is in the books.

With our move yesterday, we had an 82 mile drive to get back to Honey Island (which is an odd name for essentially an intersection with a general store). We left the KOA at 8 and got on the road at 10:15 under partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid-70’s.

Trivia question of the day: …

Days 14 – Ride (8) – Shepherd, TX to New Waverly, TX

Thursday April 29, 2021, 36 miles (57 km) – Total so far: 341 miles (549 km) Ride (9) is done; one more to go – maybe!

The rain today was to hold off until early afternoon, so we left the campground at 8 and got on the road at 9:40. …
