About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Wind Out To Slow Me, Local Legend Again, Out & Back to Roman Forest

Texbiker.net Posted on May 3, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMay 3, 2021

No bike race to watch this morning allowing me to start today’s bike ride at 9:51 AM, a little earlier than usual. I chose a longer route heading north on my “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route to get the week off to a good start. This was the second time biking this route in 2021. I rode my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike 41.25 miles. May now totals 98.55 miles towards my 660 mile goal.

At the start the wind wasn’t too strong but by the time I finished at 1:14 PM it picked up producing a stiff headwind while I returned to Kingwood. Weather conditions: start 80 (83% humidity, 74.2 dew point), overcast with haze, wind S 10 mph; finish 87 (63% humidity, 72.8 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 16 mph gusts 24 mph. The gusts made pedaling extra difficult but I kept my average speed above 14 mph until I returned to Kingwood. No long sleeves necessary today but I did wear sunscreen.

While I rode to US59 to head north I spotted two other cyclists in Sherwood Trails Village. Our paths didn’t cross but I did seem as I turned north and they rode west. If you watch the video you can see a glimpse of them in the second clip under my arm as I hold the GoPro in a strange position.

The blooming plants caught my eye as I biked through Tavola so I stopped and took these photos. The colors compliment the Canyon bike.

Video: Cyclists continue the journey to Kyle Field for the MS150 despite weather conditions and cancellations

Rain and flooding prompted officials to cancel the @TexasMS150 that was set to bring over 4,000 cyclists to #CollegeStation. Coming up on @KBTXNews at Ten, hear from riders who were determined to stay the course and hit the road despite the conditions. pic.twitter.com/mhDuJqqkOr

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Extreme rain and flooding issues prompted MS-150 organizers to cancel Saturday’s bike ride. Over 4,000 riders were set to travel three routes from across the region, converging at Kyle Field in College Station. 2021 marks the second year the bike ride was canceled as last year’s event was canceled due to the pandemic. The annual bike ride is part of a fundraiser to bring awareness to multiple sclerosis (MS).

Linda Bates, President of the South Central Chapter of the MS Society, says canceling the event was tough but the right decision to make.

“There’s just no way we as an organization would …

… Despite the cancellation of the event, cyclists still made their way to the finish line.

Stuart Burbach, a former Texas A&M student and long-time cyclist, says he was determined to make his way home back to Aggieland.

“This is my 34th year riding in the MS, and the first year we were supposed to end up in College Station, we got COVID-ED out, the second year we got rained out. It’s a tough life, but we keep fighting,” said Burbach. “This is a great moment. After 33 years of …

April Activities Strava Summary

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Well, 33% of 2021 is in the bag. It seems like it was just New Years Day recently. But time flies when you’re having fun. Or to quote early AI researcher, Anthony Oettinger (not Groucho Marx): “Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.” And while biking for me feels sometimes like a job just to reach my mostly meaningless mileage goals, of course I mostly do enjoy it. Some might say my number goals are quite mental, and they may well be. But I see them as targets to which I aspire, signposts along the journey that I’m making progress. As it turns out, I’m averaging 101 miles a week for the last four weeks, which puts …

Blue Sky, 21 mph Wind Gusts, Bright Blooms, 200+ Mile Week

Texbiker.net Posted on May 2, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMay 2, 2021

A big change in the weather earlier this morning when it rained to 1:41 PM when I started today’s bike ride. We are getting into the upper 80’s, sunny, but still windy. I rode the Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike on what I call the “Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch” route. It wasn’t the exact same route I biked the last time on March 15th. I forgot the beginning part of the route and altered it so that as I returned to Kingwood I repeated the streets from the beginning. I try not to do that. This made the ride a few miles shorter coming in at 26.69 miles versus 30.4. This still was enough to put me over the 200 mile mark for the week with 214.63 miles. I increased my shortfall of YTD miles from 2020 to 80 miles at 3,034 for 2021. A summary of the week’s bike rides.

5-2-2021 SportTracks Week Summary Ending 5-2-2021

Due to rain on Friday I biked 6 days out of 7. The average distance was 35.77 miles which made up for the missing day. Monday I rode a route I haven’t done in several years. I plan on biking another route this week that I haven’t done in several years.

With the after church start time the weather was almost perfect except for the strong wind. Weather conditions: tart 85 (53% humidity, 65.6 dew point), a few clouds, wind SW 12 mph; finish 88 (48% humidity, 5.6 dew point), a few clouds, wind W 12 mph gusts 21 mph. I did have a tailwind at times but the headwind was stiff.

In Valley Ranch I took these photos. The bright flowers caught my eye.

Daniela Sternitzky-Di Napoli | www.click2houston.com

HOUSTON – Organizers have announced that the Texas MS 150 event has been canceled for Saturday due to the inclement weather.

According to the announcement, the decision was difficult but in the best interest of safety for the riders.

Multiple Sclerosis Society makes food donation to Twin City Mission

By Donnie Tuggle | wwwkbtx.com

“They immediately asked us to find a good organization to be able to deliver that food on their behalf, and we were happy to do it.”

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Saturday’s unfortunate cancellation of the MS-150 bike ride to Kyle Field left event organizers with over 2,000 portions of food and no one to eat it. That’s when they decided to repackage the food and donate it to Twin City Mission.

The food was prepared and delivered by Levy Restaurants at Olsen Field on behalf of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. They were tasked with making sure the food didn’t go to waste and decided that Twin City Mission was a great option.

“Unfortunately, with the cancellation of that (MS-150), one of their first priorities is making sure that the food didn’t …

Rare air: BMX event brings legends of sport to Longview skatepark

By Michael Cavazos | www.news-journal.com

Justin Erickson never believed he’d meet his idol — BMX legend Mat Hoffman. But on Saturday, his dream became a reality when more than 300 BMX riders, including Hoffman, attended a first-of-its-kind event at Longview’s skatepark.

“They say you should never meet your heroes, but … that’s actually probably not true because he’s a pretty cool dude,” Erickson said after visiting with Hoffman and getting his autograph. “I have been riding BMX for almost 30 years, and I never imagined that I would meet Mat Hoffman right here in …
