About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Another Windy Day, Kingwood to Ramsey Road Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 29, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 29, 2021

My bike ride today followed my “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route. I thought I rode this route earlier this year but that was slightly different because I didn’t go north on FM 2100 through Huffman. The road construction blocked the shoulder then. The last time I rode this route was 9/17/2020 which surprised me. I rode my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike covering 38.65 miles. This improved the week’s total to 157.33 miles and April to 915.65 miles, the highest month since July 2020. I now trail 2020 year to date by 17 miles with 2,977 miles for 2021. If I ride tomorrow that will put April miles above July 2020 but the weather forecast includes rain. April 2020 I rode 957 miles. I won’t get to amount.

I began the bike ride at 11:07 AM and finished at 2:14 PM. Time Moving: 2:51:37.

Another breezy day with a headwind most of the way to Ramsey Road. My legs felt good providing watts to power into the wind. Weather conditions: start 81 (76% humidity, 72.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph; 82 (75% humidity, 73.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph gusts 17 mph. Wardrobe for today: shorts and a short sleeve jersey with the Ohio state flag.

It’s been awhile since I rode on the Atascocita Hike & Bike Trail so I added it to today’s ride.

  • 4-29-2021 Atascocita Hike and Bike Trail-1
  • 4-29-2021 Atascocita Hike and Bike Trail-2

Crossing FM 2100 to continue to Ramsey Road was quick with no waiting for traffic to pass. About a third of the distance on Old Atascocita Road has a line of trees and brush off the south side of the road which breaks the wind a little. But the open parts are flat giving the wind a straight shot at me.

I brought a breakfast bar with me and at Ramsey Road I took a short break to eat it and rest my legs from the headwind. I took these photos of one of the bridges.

  • 4-29-2021 Ramsey Road Bridge-1
  • 4-29-2021 Ramsey Road Bridge-2

No Strava medals today.

The121 watts average power indicates pedaling into the headwind. for over 22 miles.

Daniel is absolutely right. For many Houstonians, riding a bike is a safe, convenient, and often enjoyable way to get around town. But for most, it's anything but. https://t.co/NgTOUtk4r5

Windy Bike Ride – Kingwood – FM1314 NW to McQueen Road

Texbiker.net Posted on April 28, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 28, 2021

What a windy bike ride today. I left at 11:05 AM heading north and northwest with a tailwind pedaling my Lynskey R300 bike. The route was similar to one I rode earlier in April but with additional streets. I call it the “Kingwood – FM1314 NW to McQueen Road” route. The first time I biked 34.63 miles but today I rode 40.47 miles finishing at 2:44 PM. Biking to the turn around point at McQueen Road and FM 1314 the tailwind helped me keep the the speed at 18+ mph. But the trip back to the southeast entailed fighting the strong headwind and I paid the price for the easier part of the bike ride.

Those 40.47 miles boosted my week to 118.68 miles and April to 877 miles. April now is the highest month so far in 2021 and the most since July 2020 when I biked 922 miles. With 2 more biking days left maybe I can surpass July 2020. Year to date totals 2,938 miles but still trails my 2020 pace by 56 miles. I narrowed the gap by a few miles from yesterday.

What the weather looked like at the start and finish of the bike ride. Notice the wind speeds and gusts from the weather conditions: start 84 (66% humidity, 71.6 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 20 mph gusts 27 mph; 81 (80% humidity, 74.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 18 mph gusts 29 mph.

The last time I rode this route I raced back McQueen Road to Pat’s Donuts getting there a few minutes before they closed at 1 PM. Today I knew the wind would make getting back to Pat’s hard so I stopped on the way to McQueen Road. My last 2 stops at Pat’s they did not have any apple fritters but today they did. I bought 1 and they gave me a free glazed donut, I ate the fritter at Pat’s before resuming the ride. Glad I did it in this order because the wind was a killer riding back to the southeast.

When I reached the 37.1 mile point I was in Oakhurst and stopped to let my legs recover while I sat in the shade on a bench in the shade by the greenbelt. They felt stronger after the 10 minute stop.

In the early part of the ride I stopped on Woodland Hills Drive and took these photos.

Day 15: Shepard, Texas To Merryville, LA

Tuesday April 27, 2021, 114 miles (183 km) – Total so far: 1,080 miles (1,739 km)

Greetings from Louisiana!. I had not planned on making it this far today but circumstances led to a long day, but a very good one. Today has two superheroes, One in the morning at the beginning of the day and one at the end.

My ride started on a quiet country Road for the first 7 miles or so and then I came to a T and turned left onto A much busier road. There must’ve been 30 big trucks that passed me within the first couple of minutes. It seemed like a convoy. Then I came to a bridge construction project where I had to stop. It was one of those automatic stop lights that only lets one direction of traffic go at a time. I was the first one to the red light and then I noticed about six or seven big trucks behind me. When the light turned green the first truck passed me, as he should, But the second truck hung behind me for a couple of hundred yards through the …
