About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

TXDot Replacing Liberty County FM 1960 Chip and Seal, Hooray!

Texbiker.net Posted on April 27, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 27, 2021

More clouds than yesterday as I started today’s bike ride at 11:23 AM. Rolling out on the Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike I began what I call the “May Park Community Center – Huffman” route. This route goes south and then east to Liberty County where I turn around heading a short distance to the north then south, west and then north back to Kingwood at 2:21 PM.

I couldn’t remember how many miles this route runs but I ended up with 39.66 miles. The week now totals 78.21 miles and April 836.53 miles. With 3 potential biking days left in April I could hit 900+ miles but the weather forecast has some rain in it. Year to date I am at 2,898 miles, 62 miles less than this point in 2020. I’m staying close.2020 was my best year mileage wide.

Overcast and breezy describes today’s weather: start 77 (82% humidity, 70.9 dew point), overcast, wind SE 15 mph; 77 (85% humidity, 72.1 dew point), overcast, wind SE 13 mph. East of FM 2100 some rain drops fell on me but not enough to get me wet. I wore shorts, a long sleeve jersey and a short sleeve jersey over it. That was a good combination with the wind and high humidity.

At the Liberty County line I didn’t get to actually ride across due road construction. I talked with the flagman and he said they are replacing the chip and seal with real asphalt. The next ride I should be able to ride more into Liberty County, maybe all the way to Dayton. It has been a long time since I biked to Dayton, probably before I had a GPS bike computer.

A Sally on the Southern Tier

By John Schick | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 14: Navasota to Shepard sanctuary campground

Monday April 26, 2021, 80 miles (129 km) – Total so far: 966 miles (1,555 km)

It was nice to wake up in the clean and quiet hotel this morning. Out on the road at 7:25 in the humid air. Fortunately there was cloud cover most of the morning and part of the afternoon. Temperatures were in the 80s and it was very humid. This is the first time I’ve noticed the humidity. I took my first break in a small town Called Richards. A fellow named Cyrus came up to chat. He was curious about who I was, what I was doing and so forth. He told me he was 61 then when I asked him how old he thought I was he told me 49. He lives in the area and was a nice guy.

Lo and behold a bit later I saw my first fellow touring cyclist. His name is Mike and he’s from Houston. He is trying to do the southern tier in parts and has done everything east of here. He said he’s shipped his bike to San Diego last year and then had to have it shipped back because of Covid. We talked for about five or 10 minutes and it’s amazing how much it lifted my spirits.

I took a lunch break in the town of New Waverly and got some good …

Hot Biking Sikes Lake With Ryan Goslings & Pink Evening Primroses

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

With the outer world temperature heading to the semi-hot 80s I decided it was a good day to take my bike’s wheels on a roll on this final Monday of the 2021 version of April.

Soon after arriving at the paved trail around Sikes Like I came upon what you see photo documented above, a fresh flock of Ryan Goslings, soon after hatching, judging by their tiny size.

I think I recently made mention of the fact that this year’s crop of …

Revisiting Roads From The Past – Splendora – Cut & Shoot – Splendora Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 26, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 26, 2021

I drove to Splendora to start today’s bike ride. The last time I biked some of the roads on this route was back in 2015 but not the same route. I parked the Jeep at the bank, got the Canyon Endurace bike out and started the bike ride at 11:02 AM. I headed north to Fostoria Road where I turned left. Several businesses and homes added since my last ride on Fostoria Road. More traffic on this road than I remember but everyone gave me room since there is no shoulder. This took me to SH 105 where I turned left. SH 105 runs to the west and my ride covered about 13 miles. The road surface was asphalt but the shoulder width varied from 8 feet to a little over 3 feet when a center lane cropped up. Until I reached Cut and Shoot the shoulder warning divots intruded in the shoulder narrowing the area but not enough to force me onto the main lane. Around Cut and Shoot the divots disappeared. There were a few hills on SH 105 with the biggest one taking us up over the BNSF railroad tracks around the 8.5 mile mark. I stopped at the Cut and Shoot City Hall and took these photos.

  • 4-26-2021 Bike Cut and Shoot City Hall-1
  • 4-26-2021 Bike Cut and Shoot City Hall-2
  • 4-26-2021 Bike Cut and Shoot City Hall-3

Leaving City Hall I kept biking west to FM 1485. I think some development was added since my last ride through there with most of it commercial. I did see one home subdivision to the left that looked new and still under construction. I didn’t get enough warning of the FM 1485 turn so I pulled over to wait for an opening to ride over to the left turn lane. I didn’t wait long.

On FM 1485 the headwind began trying to slow my pace but the trees helped block it some. There was a 4 foot shoulder most of the way to FM 2090 except for a couple of spots where left turn lanes appeared. The asphalt surface was good and only a few rolling hills. As I approached FM 2090 I saw a road construction warning pointing in the direction I needed to bike. At the traffic light I saw the work zone and it looked like it was where two bridges crossed a low area. Traffic was light and I rode to and through the construction area with only one car passing me with plenty of room. On the other side of the construction 2 big dogs started barking and running parallel to me but in their yard. The fence was open enough for them to get through but they stayed in the yard, thank goodness.

More rolling hills as I rode to Splendora but the wind was now across me instead of a headwind. Across from Splendora High School the land had been cleared for something but no signs to explain it. A couple of new buildings on the way to Splendora from my memory. I rolled into the bank parking lot and finished the ride at 1:41 PM. The 38.55 miles almost matched the route I constructed in RideWithGPS.com last week at 38.6 miles. After putting the Canyon bike in the Jeep I ate two snacks before driving back to Kingwood.

Weather conditions for the bike ride: start 73 (71% humidity, 63 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 14 mph; finish 81 (54% humidity, 63 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 18 mph. No wonder I noticed the headwind on FM 1485 and FM 2090 at 18 mph. I dressed for 73 degrees wearing shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey.

Next week I plan on another bike ride starting at a place I drive to.

Thanks to Strava awarding me 4 silver medals that helped me find the previous rides on SH 105 and FM 2090 back in March and April of 2015. Those were not the same whole route but segments on those roads.

Dallas’ hike-and-bike trails make good neighbors

By Allie Beth Allman & Associates | www.dallasnews.com

Allie Beth Allman & Associates is offering homes near the Katy Trail, White Rock Lake Trail, Santa Fe Trail and Northaven Trail.

Living near a hiking-and-biking trail makes it much more convenient to go for a run or walk. But it can also add value to your home.

Like being in a neighborhood with good schools and low crime, a trail can boost more than your life expectancy. It increases the attractiveness of your home and research shows that most homeowners think a trail can be a good neighbor.

Blessed with numerous railroads from its early history, Dallas has converted several …

Fiesta Bike Parade draws hundreds of cyclists to King William

by Brendan Gibbons | sanantonioreport.org

In an event that hearkened back to the pre-pandemic rides that drew hundreds of people on bikes to downtown streets, a procession of cyclists wove through King William on Saturday for the inaugural Fiesta Bike Parade.

More than 200 riders started at Brackenridge High School and rode a meandering route through the King William and Lavaca neighborhoods south of downtown. Local bike clubs SATX Social Ride, San Antonio Lady Riders, Black Girls Do Bike, Odd Fellas, and Wild Dawgs supported the ride.

There’s been talk of a Fiesta parade in the bike community for 20 years, SATX Social Ride founder …

Day 10: Johnson City to Austin

Thursday April 22, 2021, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 734 miles (1,182 km) So I imagine I will probably be eating these words, but I think I’m coming to terms with the wind. This morning as I left Johnson City and turned right onto my road, boom, there it was right in my face. This time instead of growling at it, I felt like I just inwardly shrugged and said, “ well there you are.” I guess the wind is going to do with the wind is going to do and I need to live with it. So, let’s see how far I get with that attitude.

The ride into Austin was quite nice even though there were still hills to deal with. The news stories about how Austin is one of the fastest growing places in the country were more and more evident the closer I got. There is Building everywhere. I knew I was getting closer to a …

Day 11 – Rest Day: Fun in Austin

Friday April 23, 2021 The rain was supposed to hold off today until 1 o’clock but when I left the apartment at 8o’clock it was a soft drizzle. It stayed that way until about 1 o’clock when it picked up in intensity. The thunderstorms were brief and not that intense. All in all, it was a great day to be off of the bike.

I started off by riding the bike to the …

Day 12: Austin to Buescher state park

Saturday April 24, 2021, 60 miles (97 km) – Total so far: 795 miles (1,279 km) So it was with renewed energy in my legs and renewed spirit that I left my Airbnb at 7:30 this morning. My ride through Austin was very smooth with little traffic out. After an overcast day with rain yesterday today Dawned crystal clear. The winds were in my favor for the most part and riding was good. In fact, The riding was excellent on back roads with very little traffic.

Austin is known for its burgeoning Tech industry and there was evidence of that as I rode east. There were huge technology company buildings and many more either being built or in the planning stages according to the signs on the ground. Also lots of houses going up.

The state park is very nice and it was good to find a place in the shade because it’s in the low 80s right now. It makes me …

Day 13: Buescher State Park – Navasota

Sunday April 25, 2021, 92 miles (147 km) – Total so far: 886 miles (1,426 km) I knew today was going to be hot and I had a long ways to go so I set the alarm for 6 o’clock and was on the road at 7:18. I deviated from the ACA route from Bastrop to the La Grange and rode on Highway 71 which turned out to be a good decision. The shoulder was very wide, even when there were two rumble strips, and traffic was light.

It was just a delightful day for riding a bike. The sky was clear, the temperature was close to 90 so it was warm in the afternoon. The wind was not a factor and most of the riding was on country roads with very little traffic. I was surprised to see my final climbing stats for the day. There were a lot of rollers but they were not as intense as previous days and there was large portions of level riding today.

I have to say that I enjoy this part of Texas much more than the western half. Everything was …
