About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas-sized welcome for Texas Challenge bikers

By Blair Dupre | www.forthoodsentinel.com

Around 40 bikers, participating in the 2021 Project Hero: Ride 2 Recovery Texas Challenge, made their way to the III Corps flagpole, April 15, where they were given a great big Fort Hood welcome on their pit stop from Austin to Arlington.

Soldiers lined the flag pole circle and greeted the bikers with cheers as they rode in. Before long, everyone was talking, laughing, taking photos and dancing to the lively music provided by the 1st Cavalry Band.

Project Hero, a non-profit organization, was founded in 2008 with the intent of helping veterans, service members and …

Transportation Services to launch free bike loan program

by Ileana Garnand | www.ntdaily.com

The university developed a bike loan program open to all students at no cost using unclaimed vehicles and is scheduled to launch in time for the start of the upcoming fall semester.

The initiative was created to help fill the void left by the bike-share company VeoRide when it ceased serving Denton in the fall of 2020. Students will be able to check out a bike from the Transportation Services office located in the Highland Street Parking Garage and can use it both on campus and in the surrounding Denton area. The predetermined loan periods will range from a couple of …

Before Dental Work, Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 22, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 22, 2021

The Tour of The Alps ended early enough to help get today’s bike ride started at 10:22 AM. I rode north on my “Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood” route biking 31.83 miles by the 12:48 PM finish. The main reason for the early start was a dental appointment this afternoon.

The week now totals 145.09 miles and April is up to 671.7 miles. I am not gaining on YTD 2020 miles with 2021 trailing by 46 miles. This was the 6th time I biked this route in 2021. The week is in a good position to reach 200+ miles and I am considering an organized ride on Saturday.

I rode my Lynskey 300 bike pushing the odometer to 3,821 miles.

With the early start the temperature was hovering just above 60 when I got ready improving to 64 by the time I walked out the door. Bike ride weather: start 64 (50% humidity, 45 dew point), partly cloudy, wind E 9 mph; finish 69 (52% humidity, 51 dew point), partly cloudy, wind E 15 mph. The wind got stronger during the ride and riding to the east I noticed harder pedaling. I wore shorts, leg warmers, a long sleeve thermal jersey and a windbreaker jacket. I was a little chilly at the start but after about 15 minutes of biking I didn’t notice it any longer.

Friday’s weather forecast contains rain but maybe not until mid day.

I stopped in Valley Ranch and took the photos at the Valley Ranch Parkway and Texas 99 interchange.

Notice the blue sky in the background. Clouds increased some by the end of the bike ride.

Where Did The 80+ Degrees Go? Huffman Out & Back Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 21, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 21, 2021

My biking experiences today ranged from watching three races, watching the temperature finally move above 60, and starting at 2:01 PM. I can’t remember starting a bike ride this late in quite some time. While watching the races I wondered if I would ride at all since the wind was strong and the temperature would not move above 60, my threshold. Determined to ride today I considered going even if it stayed below 60.

By the start time it warmed enough and I bundled up (for me anyway) with shorts, leg warmers, a long sleeve thermal jersey, windbreaker jacket, Burt’s Bees lip balm, and biking gloves. With the sunshine I didn’t feel too chilled as I set off on the Canyon Endurace to ride my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. Because of the late start I didn’t follow the longer lead out but reverted to the shorter one. I expected to ride about 31 miles but actually went 32.87 miles. My week total stands at 113.26 miles, within reach of a 200+ mile week. Friday’s weather forecast looks wet which is why I wanted to ride today and not loose 2 biking days this week. I now trail 2020 YTD miles by 45. Last year on this date I biked 41.86 miles is why the difference increased. Another reason to ride today.

Despite the late start I saw another cyclist on Fairlake Lane at the curve south of the church.

Sunshine overcame some clouds but the north wind had a bite to it. Weather conditions: start 63 (32% humidity, 32.9 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind N 15 mph; finish 68 (28% humidity, 33.5 dew point), fair, wind NE 10 mph. Any time I rode a direction with north in it I had to fight the wind. The hardest section was biking east over Lake Houston with the headwind pushing my bike around. I expected it might be like that on the riding west but the wind was helpful until I turned north onto Atascocita Shores Drive.

The shoulder between the west end of the Lake Houston causeway and Atascocita Shores Drive was blocked with orange barrels for the absent construction workers. I stopped before them and waited for an opening to sprint to the traffic light and make the right turn.

I finished the ride at 4:32 PM.
