About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Police investigating hit and run that killed cyclist near UH Sunday

Dug Begley | www.houstonchronicle.com

A Sunday morning hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist remains under investigation, Houston police said.

Around 8 a.m., the cyclist, identified as James Turley, 73, was riding northbound along Spur 5 near Elgin. As Turley turned onto Elgin riding his three-wheeled recumbent bike, he was struck by a westbound driver on Elgin. Police said the driver did not stop.

A recumbent bike is a vehicle that allows the rider to sit down and pedal with …

Day 7: Brackettville- Leakey

Monday April 19, 2021, 75 miles (121 km) – Total so far: 542 miles (873 km) Deeper and deeper into the heart of Texas. Today I got a taste of what’s to come when I entered Texas Hill country. Had a wonderful stay at the fort Clarke campground. The fort is a huge complex and was a nice early morning ride to take me to my second breakfast after the pizza. I found breakfast tacos which Had just opened up at 8 o’clock. An egg and Bacon taco and egg and chorizo did the trick.

I feel like I’m settling into a groove and the miles are accumulating. Today I passed over 500 for the trip which means I’m a quarter done. I usually think about taking a break every 10 miles or so. Sometimes it’s just a matter of getting out of the saddle and straddling the bike that will do the trick. Other times I will need to get off the bike and stretch or go lay down for a few minutes.

Today I was able to mail my package home and I can tell a difference in volume and in weight. There was one …

Day 8: Leakey to Kerrville

Tuesday April 20, 2021, 68 miles (110 km) – Total so far: 611 miles (983 km) Someone, in a conversation with me once, said, “Verizon, you could probably get Verizon on the moon. “Well, I don’t know if that’s true or not but there was no Verizon coverage in the hill country for the last two days. And what a two days it was.

These were the best two days of the trip so far. It was so nice to be out of the desert and into terrain with trees and water and flowers. The climbing has been extraordinary and the reward magnificent. Just so nice to be flying down roads after the challenge of climbing to the summit. There were several sections today where the grade was between 9 to 11% which is pretty significant The rollers seem to go on forever and ever but the scenery has turned quite beautiful.

There were parts of today that were nicer than I could’ve imagined Texas ever …

Sunny Day For Spring Creek Greenway Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 20, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 20, 2021

Beautiful weather as I rolled out on today’s bike ride heading for the Spring Creek Greenway. The ride began at 11:00 AM and thankfully didn’t include a flat tire like yesterday. The bike for today’s ride: Canyon Endurace CF SLX. I rode 44.09 miles boosting the week’s total to 80.39 miles and putting me over my 600 mile goal for April with 607 miles. Next goal is to equal April 2020 with 957 miles. This will be a big stretch. The weather will need to help me.

Last year on this date I rode to Splendora covering 43.2 miles. During the bike ride I noticed a number of people using power washers, maybe a sign of boredom during the days of Covid-19 restrictions. April 20th, 2019, I biked the opposite direction to Stroker Road and Huffman going 42.22 miles. Both days’ weather were like today.

Today was the third time riding on the Spring Creek Greenway this year but the other times were shorter distances.

Photos from the ride.

Chamber of Commerce weather for the bike ride: start 72 (43% humidity, 48.4 dew point), fair, wind W 6 mph; finish 79 (35% humidity, 49.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind NW 8 mph. I prefer the temperature to be higher but I dressed correctly wearing shorts, a long sleeve jersey with a short sleeve jersey over it. The greenway has a lot of shade and the long sleeves kept me comfortable and from the sun. Tomorrow will not be as warm.

A number of cyclists out today as the video shows.

Strava listed a number of medals for the ride: 4 gold personal records, 4 silver, and 2 bronze. I wasn’t thinking of them as I biked but I did keep a nice pace.

Day 6: Comstock to Brackettville

Sunday April 18, 2021, 66 miles (107 km) – Total so far: 467 miles (752 km)

Today was a very awesome day riding. I arrived at a beautiful campground at Fort Clark in Brackettville at 3 PM. It’s my earliest arrival except for my first day when it was 3 PM but my phone thought it was 4. The first 32 miles to Del Rio flew by. Fort Clark was an actual army fort which is been restored and is quite quite large. The poster on the wall tells me that Robert E Lee, Ulysses S Grant, Douglas MacArthur, and George S Patton all served here. Now they can add my name to the list.

I love getting an early start for many reasons including the winds usually are not as sharp and there’s less …

Less Than A Mile When Trouble Hit Today’s Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 19, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 19, 2021

Less than a mile after starting a problem arrived. A flat rear tire. As the video shows I aired both tires up on the Lynskey R300 before starting the bike ride. The tires felt a little soft so I thought adding air was a good idea. Maybe it was and saved me from a flat farther into the bike ride. I turned around and rode the Lynskey about half way home to save time and cleat wear. The other half I walked. Back home I began the fixing the flat, removed the tube, found the hole, inspected the tire for the cause and found nothing. The patch kit glue was in good shape and the patch went on accurately and stuck. Aired the the tube to test and all looked good. Back inside the tire I aired the tube up and put away all of the tools. The tire was nice and firm the rest of the ride.

The first attempted ride started at 12:00 PM and the encore at 12:47 PM. The route didn’t change, “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood”, heading north. By the 3:31 PM finish I biked 36.29 miles. A good way to begin the week. I didn’t ride yesterday and my legs felt rested today. Last week I rode 145.06 miles but I plan on 200+ miles this week. I am 37 miles behind YTD 2020 and want to make up the difference. April miles are 562.91, closing in on my 600 mile goal.

Today’s weather was much better than yesterday. It was cool and deary yesterday which is why I didn’t feel like biking. The normal temperatures for today are 79.9 and 57. When I got up this morning it was 47 but I was optimistic once I saw the sun coming through the windows. I watched the Tour of The Alps while waiting on it to warm up. Weather at the start and finish: start 69 (39% humidity, 43.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind E 8 mph; finish 74 (36% humidity, 45.1 dew point), partly cloudy, wind variable 5 mph. Continuing my optimism I wore shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. When I came back home to fix the flat I almost replaced the jacket with a short sleeve jersey but didn’t. I wasn’t too hot during the bike ride.

I built my average speed up to 14.2 mph and held it until I returned to Kings Manor and Kingwood. The light wind let me keep a good pace.
