About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

From Doubtful to Doing It, Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 16, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 16, 2021

When I went to drop off a package around 10 AM going on a bike ride today didn’t look very promising. The windshield on the Jeep gathered small beads of rain and the temperature was in the low 60’s. Waiting and hoping the mist left and the temperature went up to 70 as I prepared to go biking. I rolled the Lynskey R300 bike out the back door and rode down the driveway, pressing the start button on the Bolt computer at 12:44 PM. Not as early as I wanted but better than what it looked like at 10:15 AM.

After biking south yesterday today I rode north on my “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” route. At the start I estimated the ride would cover 31 miles and the actual distance was 31.37 miles. The week now totals 116.64 miles. April totals 498.2 miles, leaving 102 miles to reach my goal. Comparing 2021 to 2020 year to date miles, 2021 trails by 30 miles at 2,559. I checked the blog post for 4/16/2020 to see where and what that bike ride was like. The weather was better and the route “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” went longer.

I’m ready to get back to sunshine and warmer temperatures. The forecast says I will have to wait several days. Conditions today: start 70 (84% humidity, 65 dew point), overcast, wind SE 12 mph; finish 70 (92% humidity, 68.1 dew point), overcast, wind SE 12 mph. I got leg warmers out of the closet but ended up not wearing them due to the temperature warming to 70. I did wear shorts, a long sleeve thermal jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. I should’ve changed the thermal jersey to a regular long sleeve one. The wind didn’t change during the bike ride. The expected headwind returning to Kingwood wasn’t too bad. The frontage road heads SW enough to move the wind to the side and not a direct headwind. A front may arrive later tonight and off the coast by Saturday morning. Saturday’s bike ride could be affected.

Wildflowers along the road are blooming as the video shows. With the moisture in the air it waters them though we haven’t received much rain. The February cold storm doesn’t appear to hurt them.

Day 2: Fort Hancock to Van Horn

Wednesday April 14, 2021, 76 miles (122 km) – Total so far: 127 miles (204 km) Well my long anticipated meal out last night did not work out very well. The restaurant was closed by the time I got there. So it turned out to be Mac and cheese and bacon bits with a Cliff bar chaser in the motel room.

The strangest thing happened yesterday. When I pulled into Fort Hancock I rode around behind the back of the post office to be in the shade and to take a break and figure out my next steps. I looked at the phone and it said it was 4 o’clock. I knew where I was at 12o’clock and it was only 18 miles away so it didn’t really make sense. It turns out that my phone advanced to central time even though The central time zone was 70 miles away. It made a …

Well we got to the campsite today but 1130 but they didn’t take us to the hotel till 730 at night so I didn’t get a chance to update today I’ll try to update my blog as I can dictating into my phone it’s kind of hard because I’m talking to other people come walking up and talk to me. We’ll see what tomorrow brings

I’m recording this on Friday the ninth can’t remember all that happened yesterday. I think I have some of this already recorded on crazy guy like a bike. It was a beautiful day wasn’t too hard of a ride home I had a flat tire first thing in the morning was the last want to leave the campsite at 8 o’clock your buddy else left at 7:30 sharp I caught up with them just before the rest stop or sag which there was a mile long ride up in 8% he’ll 8% grade he’ll that I was passing some folks going …

Day 28. April 9, will try to update this when I get to the hotel didn’t get to the hotel yesterday till 730 in the evening and went to bed about 830 so didn’t have time to update anything online

Friday April 9, 2021, 59 miles (95 km) – Total so far: 1,438 miles (2,314 km) We started off 730 and headed out to find some traffic find some hills find some more hills not always the good type of Rollinghills we can roll down one side and roll up the other side you lose about 5 miles an hour on these are very rough roads they shook my back light off of the bike bag a couple times it’s so rough

Oh yeah yesterday saw some zebras I forgot to mention that I just forgot to the SAG too. Today saw a dead wild Bore on the side of the road saw a bunch of deer along the side some running alive and many dead. Lots of vultures around to feast on dead flesh!

Go ahead it’s kind of crappy yeah yeah I’m waiting to find out when we’re going to go to the hotel I was like I could be doing stuff after dinner holy shit fuck excuse my language I’m sorry , yeah I could be sleeping on my bed so yeah I am too I’m recording this I’m dictating my journal here So we had the hills we had today were the very rough roads so it was hard to go to fast downhill to roll up the other because I was not familiar with the roads and they were shaded so at 40 miles an hour I didn’t wanna crash and burn and get all torn up and have to go to the …

Day 29 April 10 th Blanco to Lockhert the days are all running together now

Saturday April 10, 2021, 58 miles (94 km) – Total so far: 1,496 miles (2,408 km) Will have to consult my texts to Nancy my wife for updates that I send her as soon as I get into town……befoe a beer or two erases my daily highs and lows.

I’m recording this two days later trying to remember what all happened it was an uneventful day.

I know I had new petals wore my new shorts again after cleaning them really good they are very comfortable.

We had some Rolling hills, nothing too tough. We still had a hard time to go down hill with the rough roads, you couldn’t get much speed to coast up the next hill most of the time.

They had the chicken Primavera for dinner again with no seasoning; just served it as …

Day 30 April 11th road from Lockhart to La Grange TX: ZZ Top was not in the town today.

Sunday April 11, 2021, 63 miles (101 km) – Total so far: 1,559 miles (2,509 km) Was probably the most beautiful ride for scenery and long horn steers. pictures on Facebook

It was about 43F degrees when we woke up. I was all bundled up course had to go P out in the parking lot because there’s only three freaking toilets for 29 people.

So anyway coffee was served, the runny oatmeal was served, soon we’re heading out, started out was all right, some Rolling hills, some rough roads.

Well but that’s Texas, will be glad when we get out of Texas on these friggin chip and seal roads!! You just lose 3 to 5 miles an hour just on these bumpy roads. And you keep thinking, "oh do I have a flat tire?”… but you don’t, and …

Day 31 Monday, April 12 ride from La Grange Texas to Hidalgo falls Tx 1600 miles rides: another wonderful day, mostly cloudy with some wind to keep us cool……….Eddie shouts all day long

Monday April 12, 2021, 69 miles (112 km) – Total so far: 1,629 miles (2,621 km) Anyway each morning I’ve been getting up feeling great, can’t wait to go bike riding! I don’t have any pains or stiff muscles or anything that feels old like I did a few months ago so I think I’m getting younger as I ride each day! so for those of you who haven’t gone riding cross-country you need to do it because you’ll get younger every day at least feel younger so it feels awesome.

So today we stopped at 50 miles for a rest up here for lunch and l am still feeling good! I’ve got about 18 more miles to go to the overnight camp excellent!

So last night it was only like 61 overnight so yeah wasn’t wasn’t cold and wasn’t hot didn’t really need a sleeping bag so I slept on top of it. But the humidity level was up so woke up in the outfield kind of sticky from the humidity but not bad. Then slept through most of the night other than …

Some Stink On Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100 Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 15, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 15, 2021

After roaming rain canceled yesterday’s bike ride I wanted to get out and ride today. I watched two bike races (Tour of Turkey and Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana) while waiting for the temperature to go up a few degrees. When those finished it was in the low 60’s and not inviting. Finally the temperature began going up and I got ready for the bike ride.

Canyon Endurace bike wheels down at 11:42 AM as I began the bike ride following my “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” route. I decided to not ride north through Huffman and made it a mostly out and back ride covering 33.62 miles. Reaching 200+ miles this week looks doubtful with a short ride on Tuesday and no ride yesterday. The week’s total stands at 85.27 miles. Surprisingly I am only 24 miles behind 2020 year to date; 2,528 versus 2,552 miles. I stopped for a few minutes at FM 2100 and Old Atascocita Road for this photo. Old FM 2100 asphalt has been removed to make way for the new concrete lanes.

4-15-2021 Bike Ride FM 2100

Today’s weather wasn’t in my sweet zone for bike riding. Just a few degrees above my 60 degree threshold I bundled up with shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. For the first 4 or 5 miles I felt chilled except for my legs. The leg warmers did their job. Once I warmed up the chill wasn’t noticeable. Weather conditions: start 66 (84% humidity, 61.2 dew point), overcast, wind NE 14 mph; finish 70 (76% humidity, 61.9 dew point), overcast, wind NE 12 mph. The headwind riding east or northeast was tough.

Biking east over Lake Houston on FM 1960 was stinky. I don’t know which decaying insect was in the mounds as I biked but every whiff was not pleasant and the northeast wind sent it my way. The return trip on the other side wasn’t as bad with fewer decaying mounds. This happens each spring.

A day off allowed my legs some recovery and they were up to the headwind on the way to FM 2100. Average power according to Golden Cheetah came in at 110 watts with a max of 451 watts. Of the 2:23:50 riding time I spent 50% in power zones 1 and 2 and the other 50% in zones 3 through 7.

By John Schick | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 1: El Paso – Fort Hancock

Tuesday April 13, 2021, 51 miles (82 km) – Total so far: 51 miles (82 km) My 3 day trip from Bellingham, Washington to El Paso, Texas went about as smooth as it possibly could. I had set my alarm at home to wake up at six but ended up waking up at four and ready to go. So I ended up leaving at six which turned out to be a good thing because Snoqualmie Pass was under an inch of snow and it was coming down pretty good. As it turns out the pass was closed in both directions later that morning. The early bird did not get the worm but he did get safe passage.

Later that first day The windshield was hit by a flying rock and I knew I would have to deal with that before I started riding. As it turns out I was able to get into a Safelite shop yesterday in Las Cruces, New Mexico end it only …

Whit Snell has peddled bikes to San Antonians for nearly 50 years.

Tens of thousands of bikes.

But the 73-year-old founder and owner of Bike World doesn’t like to talk about the numbers. When asked, he paused a beat, whisper-repeated the question to himself, and said, “Gee whiz, it doesn’t really matter to me, you know.”

The response exemplified the easy-going demeanor of a bike lover who expanded the small shop he opened in 1971 to become the 13th largest Trek Bicycle dealer in the country.

Good origin stories are like good bike trails — they need curves, surprises and some ups and downs. And Snell’s journey to leading one of San Antonio’s …

The Big BRAIN Ten: The biggest bike retailers in the US

by Ray Keener | www.bicycleretailer.com

MILWAUKEE (BRAIN) — There are lists of America’s best bike shops and of the "top 100" bike shops. But, BRAIN being a dollars-and-cents kind of business magazine, we set out to identify America’s largest: The Big BRAIN Ten.

No subjective reviews, no rankings or votes or opt-in fees from the stores. And, sorry, retailers won’t get stickers for their windows. Not that there’s anything wrong with those approaches. This was just a different kind of project.

How did we do it?

First we defined what we were looking for: the 10 largest-grossing retailers who sell IBD-quality bikes primarily through brick-and-mortar stores. …

… Richardson Bike Mart

Year founded: 1962 Number of locations: Four, all in Texas Brands carried: Trek, Specialized, Giant, Electra, Cervelo Owned by: Ken "Woody" Smith

Richardson Bike Mart has been a North Texas institution for cyclists of all stripes. It’s 27,000 square foot "mothership" store in Richardson is one of the world’s largest. Owner Ken "Woody" Smith got started BMX racing in 1979 and joined the industry in 1983.

Smith continues to be inspired and energized by the industry. "The bike has saved my life in many ways," Smith said. "I love the way bikes can change people’s lives. Seeing this happen inspires me every day."

As far as challenges to his success, Smith cited competition from his vendors and shrinking margins. Secrets to his success includes "God’s grace, surrounding yourself with staff that are positive, hardworking and grateful, with a serving heart."

Smith describes the business environment for his stores as "awesome now and very good before COVID." He plans to open a few more stores within the next 18 months and bring his online sales into the 21st century. …
