About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Goal Motivation After Rain And Floods.

Texbiker.net Posted on May 6, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMay 6, 2024

After the rain and flooding and not biking 3 days I need to make up for the lost miles if I’m going to reach my 749 mile goal for May. With that in mind I chose a 40+ mile route for today’s bike ride and added to the distance. I wanted to ride where the flooding would not be a problem today. I chose the Kingwood – FM1314 NW to McQueen Road route. The last time I rode this route was May 15th, 2023. I’m not sure why I haven’t biked it sooner. The average distance for the previous 9 rides was around 40 to 41 miles. Today I rode 45.48 miles to catch up. To reach my May goal I need to average 25 miles every day. I should be at 150 miles and with today’s ride I’m at 99.56 miles. Getting there.

The ride started at 11:01 AM after watching stage 3 of the Giro d’Italia. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike. Getting to McQueen Road was aided by the SSE tailwind with 20+ mph gusts. Those same gusts made it tough biking back into the headwind. I stopped at the Sorters road Circle K and bought a 32 oz Berry Mountain Power Ade drink. I took the time to rest before tackling the remaining 13 miles. My legs were better after resting 10 or 15 minutes and the headwind didn’t seem as strong. I finished at 2:48 PM.

Weather: Start 81 degrees, humidity 81%, dew point 74.3, 90% cloud cover, wind SSE 10 mph gusts 18 mph; Circle K Sorters Road 83 degrees, humidity 71%, dew point 73, 76% cloud cover, wind SSE 14 mph gusts 22 mph; Finish 83 degrees, humidity 75%, dew point 74.6, 57% cloud cover, wind SSE 14 mph gusts 23 mph.

The Trailist: A low-speed appreciation of Bamberger Nature Park’s dirt trails

by Brendan Gibbons | sanantonioreport.org

For years, Bamberger Nature Park was for me just a short section of a longer mountain bike ride along the Leon Creek Greenway. Last week, I got a chance to slow down and appreciate the natural area more fully.

The park includes 55 acres on the Northwest Side where the typically dry Huesta and Maverick creeks intersect with the larger Leon Creek, which often at least has standing pools of water. The land also lies over the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone, where water flows directly from the surface into the aquifer through cracks and crevices in the limestone rock. …

High Water Blocked My Planned Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 4, 2024 by Rick AnkrumMay 4, 2024

My plan was to ride the Atascocita – Huffman – Walden route this morning. I delayed the start by watching stage 7 of the Vuelta España Feminina and stage 1 Giro d’Italia pausing the Giro with 34km to go. I managed to roll away at 9:54 AM on my Lynskey Helix bike. I wondered if I would see flooded streets in Kings River and Astascocita Shores from the 12.83″ (my home weather station) rain this week. Riding over Ben’s Branch on Kingwood Drive I got my first sign of high water. Farther on riding south along W. Lake Houston Parkway i crossed over Ben’s Branch again with high water. A few hundred yards later at Kings View Drive and W. Lake Houston Parkway barriers blocked W. Lake Houston Parkway in both directions because of water over the road. I rode into Kingwood Greens thinking I might get around the closed street but the water was even higher on Kings View. I didn’t see any homes with water but I couldn’t see Kingwood Greens Drive which is closer to the river.

Retreating back to W. Lake Houston Parkway I rode the greenbelt trail south to see if the water was low enough to continue on my planned route. It was not. At Magnolia Cove Drive water covered the street maybe 2 feet deep in places. I could see people walking on the bridge over the river but I didn’t want to get my bike shoes wet in the dirty water. I talked to some people and then turned back to the north. Riding Kings Crossing Drive I thought the roads would be clear of water but my usual way was blocked. I detoured around the water and continued back home stopping to get my pool tag before finishing the ride at 12:09 PM. The 16.83 miles was less than I hoped for but better than no miles. I need to make up for the lost days for my May mileage goal.
