About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

HOUSTON – Chad Freeman loves to bike around the Heights area but says that sense of peace is quickly disturbed when you have dedicated bike lanes that abruptly end or aren’t complete, forcing cyclists into traffic.

“I have an injury from where I fell a couple weeks ago, so I mean sometimes at a stop sign, you jump off your bike and fall because someone’s not paying attention,” according to Freeman.

Connecting bike lanes and routes is imperative to keep cyclists safe and to this point, advocates have been working with the city to temporarily …

I Got Misty Biking Kingwood Streets

Texbiker.net Posted on April 13, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 13, 2021

Short time window for today’s bike ride so I rode the “Kingwood Streets” route going 15.31 miles. I figured any miles are better than no miles. I also increased the pace with my average speed at 14.2 mpg (according to Strava but SportTracks calculated 14.1 mph). The bike ride started at 9:38 AM and ended at 10:44 AM. I rode the Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike.

A big change in the weather from yesterday: start 70 (97% humidity, 69 dew point), fog/mist, wind E 8 mph; finish 71 (96% humidity, 70.2 dew point), light rain, wind E 9 mph. As you can see in the video the sun went away and I rode in and out of mist or light rain.

Strava registered 2 new personal records on two different segments, ones I had not knew of. Both are on Lake Houston Parkway north of Mills Branch Drive. Apparently I’m not the only biker to ride there.

TxDOT wants to add four lanes to I-35, but a citizen work group is pushing ‘BAC’

by Seth Smalley | www.austinmonitor.com

At the April 5 joint meeting of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory councils (BAC and PAC), members reviewed a Google doc detailing their recommendations to the Texas Department of Transportation regarding the I-35 Capital Express Project.

The massive highway project proposes adding two managed lanes, in an attempt to relieve congestion, to each side of Interstate 35, from U.S. Highway 290 East to Ben White Boulevard/State Highway 71. …

… “TxDOT’s Mobility35 plan does not adequately address safety for people on bicycles and on foot as it maintains three-plus high-speed frontage road lanes. It also fails to provide any additional safe crossing points, a key aspect of reconnecting East and West Austin,” Tristan Heinen, a former BAC vice chair who is currently unaffiliated, told the Austin Monitor. “It’s a bad plan – 1950s-era thinking applied to a 2020 problem.” …

Day 31 Monday, April 12 ride from La Grange Texas to Hidalgo falls Tx 1600 miles rides: another wonderful day, mostly cloudy with some wind to keep us cool……….Eddie shouts all day long

Monday April 12, 2021, 69 miles (112 km) – Total so far: 1,629 miles (2,621 km) Anyway each morning I’ve been getting up feeling great, can’t wait to go bike riding! I don’t have any pains or stiff muscles or anything that feels old like I did a few months ago so I think I’m getting younger as I ride each day! so for those of you who haven’t gone riding cross-country you need to do it because you’ll get younger every day at least feel younger so it feels awesome.

So today we stopped at 50 miles for a rest up here for lunch and l am still feeling good! I’ve got about 18 more miles to go to the overnight camp excellent!

So last night it was only like 61 overnight so yeah wasn’t wasn’t cold and wasn’t hot didn’t really need a sleeping bag so I slept on top of it. But the humidity level was up so woke up in the outfield kind of sticky from the humidity but not bad. Then slept through most of the night other than getting up to go potty once during the night. And one of the only two bathrooms for the whole RV campsite. I guess the RV folks have their own bathrooms but …

The Quest Continues, Out and Back to Tavola Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 12, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 12, 2021

I managed to start today’s bike ride a little earlier than usual. Watching the replay of the Tour of Turkey helped rather than live. Wheels down on the Lynskey R300 bike at 10:53 AM. Today’s bike ride followed the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route though I did change the tail end of the route a little. I rode 36.35 miles to get the week off on a good start towards 200+ miles. April now totals 417.91 miles of my 600 mile goal. Unless the weather craters that goal looks reachable with 18 days left in the month. I biked 957.28 miles last April.

Good riding weather continued though the blue sky added some clouds. When I awoke this morning the temperature was 53 but the forecast called a high in the low to mid 80’s. what it was like during the bike ride: start 77 (62% humidity, 62.6 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph; finish 84 (46% humidity, 60.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. The humidity is increasing as the wind comes of the gulf. Wind remained light. I wore shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. I probably could’ve left the long sleeve jersey at home but it shielded my arms from the sun.

Flowers are blooming in many places and these Knock Out Roses in red caught my eye.

My legs felt tired today. I biked every day in April which may be the cause. No Strava records today.

Leaving earlier allowed me to stop at Pat’s Donuts in Porter on the way back to Kingwood. The quest for an apple fritter continues. A lady beat me to the last two several minutes before I arrived.
