About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

This Houston bike plan is every cyclist’s dream

Jay R. Jordan | www.chron.com

Officials unveiled a version of the East End Bike Plan during a virtual town hall meeting Wednesday.

The map shows where community members and data on Houston’s deadly streets dictate there should be more bike lanes, a vision brought together over months of public input and analysis.

Here’s the full vision, which includes bike lanes that already exist, those under construction and those the community hopes to be built with government support: …

Ken Hoffman’s 5 tips for easy ridin’ at this year’s MS 150 Texas

By Ken Hoffman | houston.culturemap.com

The Bike MS: Texas MS 150 charity bike ride from Houston to College Station is back — and smaller than ever.

After a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19, MS 150 organizers have arranged a one-day ride on Saturday, May 1 instead of the usual Houston to Austin weekend butt-buster. One day? Piece of cake, which you’ll be eating plenty of when you cross the finish line. Riding a bike all day makes you hungry.

There will be three starting points: Rhodes Stadium (102 miles to …

Day 16: Sierra Blanca to Marfa: Bobby was right about this part of Texas

Monday April 5, 2021, 107 miles (172 km) – Total so far: 1,125 miles (1,810 km) Greetings from Marfa, the Town where the movie Giant was filmed. Today was a slog…tough winds, tough roads, and a sloooow 60 mile incline between Van Horn and Marfa. My neighbor Bobby traveled through here some years ago and warned me that it’s pretty desolate. He was so right. This part of the trip has huge gaps between service stops with today being the first of three days dictated by the gaps in service. I’m glad I made it here, though tomorrow will be another long day to reach Sanderson.

There really isn’t to much to report on today, though a …

Some Wildflowers Biking to Tavola And Back

Texbiker.net Posted on April 5, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 5, 2021

Warmer weather than last week arrived today. After watching stage 1 of Itzulia Basque Country I was ready to get on my bike and ride. I readied myself and rolled my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike to the driveway. A car drove by and I pressed the start button at 11:47 AM. Riding north I began the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route finishing at 2:36 PM biking 35.17 miles in 2:31:15. A good start for the week. I plan on riding 200+ miles this week if the weather will let me. I might ride another charity ride Saturday if I convince myself to get up at 4:30 AM to drive there.

This was the 4th time riding today’s route in 2021; 3 times on my Canyon Endurace and 1 time on my Lynskey R300.

While it wasn’t quite as warm as I liked at the start it was better than last week. I wore shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. Weather conditions: start 73 (69% humidity, 62 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph; finish 77 (56% humidity, 60.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. I thought the wind might be a problem on the way back to Kingwood but it was just enough off a headwind to give me some relief.

Wildflowers along the route nestled low in the grass. I not sure what the pinkish flowers are. Sometimes Indian Paintbrush flowers stand above the grass but not yet. Bluebonnets usually are more north of today’s route near Splendora.

An overview of today’s bike ride from Golden Cheetah.

Family, friends celebrate Tito Bradshaw’s life 2 years after his death

by Iris Dimmick | sanantonioreport.org

Two years after he was struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver, Tito Bradshaw’s ghost bike still hangs from an old utility pole in an empty lot on San Antonio’s near East Side. On Saturday, several children played with memorial balloons while Bradshaw’s friends and family – some who traveled from out of state – greeted each other with fist bumps and reconnected in a way they couldn’t during the first anniversary of his death.

Last year, the …

Day 11 – Navasota: Intermittent Light Rain During Ride

Saturday April 3, 2021, 29 miles (46 km) – Total so far: 453 miles (729 km) Today’s ride was short to stage for tomorrow’s ride. I waited for a thunderstorm to pass this morning before I left the hotel. I left a little before 10 and rode 1 1/2 mile to a restaurant for breakfast. I didn’t get a chance to stop at the Blue Bell Country Store since it is closed on the weekend.

A few miles after I left Brenham is started to rain lightly. After a few miles it started to rain a little bit more so I stopped and put on my rain jacket and pants. After a few more miles it quit raining so I stopped and took off the …

Day 15: El Paso to Sierra Blanca: Chapter Three: Happy Easter and Going Solo

Sunday April 4, 2021, 90 miles (144 km) – Total so far: 1,018 miles (1,638 km) OK, so I didn’t clearly identify Chapters 1 and 2 of the trip in the previous titles. However, it came to Jeffrey as an epiphany during dinner that Chapter 1 was planning the trip, Chapter 2 was starting the trip together with him and getting through map sections 1 & 2 of the ACA Southern Tier. Thus, Chapter 3 will be my solo leg of the journey and maps 3-5.

Today’s ride made me think back on undergrad mathematics and Linear Equations. If “r” is my rate of speed, then there must be some equation that can account for the three major variables when riding: wind speed/direction, road surface, and level of incline. For today’s ride, I had one or …

Pop A – 4/01/2021 – 2.7K

Honest Tree | www.youtube.com

Group ride starting in Richardson, TX, goes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Usually involves a certain "King of the Off-Season", but he was absent today, so I posted the video up so he could see what he missed. I wonder if really matters if I post in 1080p vs. 2.7k vs. 4k. I think it doesn’t, because almost no one watches them anyway, much less on a device that would argue for higher resolutions. But it will be nice for digital archaeologists trying to piece together the Richardson cycling scene in a couple hundred years.

Easter Sunday Bike Ride on Kingwood Streets

Texbiker.net Posted on April 4, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 4, 2021

The video thumbnail shows some blue in the sky but my sunglasses covered that up making the sky look gray and threatening. After getting home from church I got ready for today’s biking excursion. Thanks to the miles on yesterday’s Gator Ride I only needed 18 miles to reach 200+ miles for the week. As the blog title says I rode the Kingwood Streets mixing in a few different streets from the last time. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike and started at 2:04 PM and finishing at 3:51 PM.

I rode 22.57 miles, accomplishing my goal, and ending the week with 204.48 miles. I missed one day or the miles would’ve been higher. This is the 5th week out of the last 6 over 200 miles. April now totals 138.89 miles with a goal of 600 miles. Year to date I am at 2,200 miles, only 7 miles behind 2020 on this date. (Years 2011 to 2019 are not close to these 2 years) A recap of the bike rides this week.

4-4-2021 SportTracks Week Bike Rides Summary

I thought it was warm enough to dress lighter wearing shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. For several miles I felt chilly but around 15 minutes into the bike ride the body heat kicked in and I wasn’t as chilled. Weather conditions: start 72 (57% humidity, 56.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph; finish 72 (59% humidity, 56.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 9 mph. According to the forecast the coming week may be warmer, maybe up to 90.
