About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Day 20 – Van Horn, TX to Marfa, TX

Wednesday March 31, 2021, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,056 miles (1,699 km) It was a very difficult day, with 25-35 mph winds and a slight uphill most of the way. At first it was a crosswind, sometims helping behind our left shoulder, other times hindering on our left shoulder. Then, after lunch, it became a full on headwind. Another rider and I traded 1 mile pulls for the last 20 miles.

We are now 1/3 across the US. …

Scenic Texas to host event for scenic byways and national destinations

By Megan Wehring | haysfreepress.com

Scenic Texas announced its first-ever “Ride for Scenic Texas,” a 21-mile loop bike ride and fundraiser to build awareness about the nonprofit’s work to designate Texas roads as official state scenic byways and to protect the Lone Star State’s visual environment.

This ride will take place on Saturday, April 10 in conjunction with the Driftwood Historical Conservation Society event to dedicate a stretch of road as the Travis Heritage Trail under state law. The event will be co-hosted with locally owned Vista Brewing.

Katy Trail cyclists raise childhood cancer awareness

By Danielle Linton-Hatfield | www.marshallnews.com

Walking through his neighborhood, Craig Vial of South Carolina approached one house in particular where a table sat outside. On this table, there were many cards, as well as food donated to not just a family of seven, but a young girl named Lila Childs — who after she and her twin sister, Skyler’s, seventh birthday, became diagnosed with a rare type of cancer known as alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. Vial, who did not originally know this little girl or her family, is a cyclist who — along with seven others — has reached out to the Fans of the Katy Trail Group on Facebook about their plan to ride their bikes on the corridor of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (MKT or Katy), which is roughly 240 miles. In doing so, the cyclists hope to not only support the Childs family and Lila, but also raise awareness to childhood cancer. …

Riding a bike in Houston can be the most convenient and enjoyable way to get around… if you know which streets to avoid and where it's possible to cross them.

— BikeHouston (@BikeHouston) April 1, 2021

"Go under the Brazos Bridge and through the hole in the wall. Take Hawthorne to Roseland to Colquitt, then, when you get to Montrose, ride on the sidewalk to Richmond. And walk your bike across at the intersection — cyclists don't have the right of way in crosswalks in Texas!"

— BikeHouston (@BikeHouston) April 1, 2021

People will talk about the guy who got arrested for riding his bike on the freeway. "He's crazy," they'll say.

What's really crazy is that in Houston, our streets are so inhospitable to cycling, some people would literally rather ride on the freeway.

It only exists for a block but Austin has a new gold standard in bike lane infrastructure. Grade and physically separated bike paths, Dutch intersections and ped islands to slow traffic. I wish it was longer and wide enough to ride side by side

No Fooling With The Wind, It Was Strong

Texbiker.net Posted on April 1, 2021 by Rick AnkrumApril 1, 2021

I didn’t bike yesterday when the weather changed from warm and overcast. Today the weather was better in some respects but windy and cooler. I started the bike ride at 12:31 PM and finished at 2:46 PM. I wasn’t sure I had enough time to ride the route I chose but I made it. I rode north on my Lynskey R300 bike following my “New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Valley Ranch” route. My goal for April is 600 miles and today’s 30.53 miles is 5% of the way there. I need to ride an average of 20 miles per day to hit my goal. No Zwift miles this month. My week total stands at 96.12 miles and I am 27 miles behind my pace for last year.

The weather changed and biking north the headwind tried to slow me down but I kept on pedaling. I dressed like it was cold with shorts, leg warmers, a t-shirt under a long sleeve thermal jersey, windbreaker jacket, and full finger gloves that are too small. Weather conditions: start 64 (27% humidity, 29.5 dew point), fair, wind NE 16 mph; finish 68 (26% humidity, 31.9 dew point), Fair, wind NE 9 mph gusts 21 mph. the 21 mph gusts came in handy biking back to Kingwood. I built my average speed up 14.4 mph with its help.

Strava declared me a “Local Legend” on one segment.

What Your Bicycle Mechanic Wishes You Knew

Lisa Tilley | wheelbrothers.com

“Hi, I need a new tube.”

“We’d be glad to help you. What size tube do you need?”

“I don’t know. A regular one.”

Hint: There are no “regular” parts when it comes to bikes!

Believe it or not, knowing the simple details of your bike will help you and your bicycle mechanic understand each other far more quickly, and with a happier result. Let’s start with those tubes…

When purchasing tubes for your bike, know the tube size you need, and whether you need Presta or Schrader valves.

Your tube size is listed on the tire itself, usually in black. You can save a photo of the size so …

Tuesday March 30, 2021, 50 miles (80 km) – Total so far: 302 miles (486 km) Walked over to the same Mexican restaurant I had dinner last night for breakfast this morning. I had a breakfast burrito. Headed out a little before 10. This morning it was overcast and the temperature was about 60F. Most of the route today was on ranch roads until I go closer to Austin. There was little traffic so the riding was pleasant.

Shadow Of The Thin Tree On New Section Of Wichita Falls Circle Trail

No, that is not the Shadow of the Extremely Thin Man you are seeing above. My plan to lose the COVID 30 I gained in the past year ran awry for various reasons in March. I am hoping April does not go awry. The thin shadow you see above is from a leaf-free tree hovering over the Circle Trail.

For 37 years the ride has raised millions to help with research towards MS.

Day Twenty Four – 2021 Epic Cross Country Southern Tier Bike Tour

Day Twenty Four | March 23, 2021

Fredericksburg, TX to Austin, TX

We had a thunderstorm last night, but today was sunny, warm and not windy! We are still in “Hill Country“, but it is our last day of over 80 miles and over 4,000ft of elevation! We got our new jerseys last night.

Elli’s super friend and guide, Susan, from Austin, joined us from Fredericksburg today. She knows the area well and just loves the camaraderie of a group ride. Though we are still in the “Hill Country”, where there is plenty of the beautiful limestone rocks, the trees are green here because …

Day 6 – Johnson City: The Battle of the 1800’s

Monday March 29, 2021, 44 miles (70 km) – Total so far: 252 miles (406 km)

It was 39F in Fredericksburg at sunrise this morning. Got up just after sunrise and started getting packed up. Left the campground around 8:45 with fleece pullover, cycling jacket, balaclava, and winter gloves on to stay warm. Rode 2 miles to breakfast at Hilda’s Tortillas. After breakfast it had started to warm up so I was able to start removing layers.

Today’s ride was mostly on ranch roads. Still has climbs today but not as steep as previous days climbs but some how managed to climb 1900 feet today. During the first 25 miles must of seen 1800 feet elevation at least 5 or 6 times. I would climb to over …

Mountain biking is all “happy trails” until you get a flat! #DallasParks has teamed up with @TheDorba to host a FREE Beginner #MountainBike Maintenance Clinic (4/15 from 6p-7p). Learn to change a flat & make minor repairs. Space is limited, register here: https://t.co/uH3AoXIKFc pic.twitter.com/qIDfS7gBwx

1/5 When you read @rgvmpo's ATP 'Vision for the future' ("world class facilities for active transportation"), you expect bike freeways, tunnels, bridges and boulevards. World class facilities are the opposite of the current situation, so let us start with this idea for Weslaco: pic.twitter.com/1oGiikUed5

Crazy race day on Sunday @Texashsmtb with lightning interrupting the race. We had a re-start 4 hours later with a shortened race, and I pulled out the win in a sprint finish, and kept the leader's jersey!#NICA #morekidsonbikes #texasmtbhttps://t.co/y2Pb2xS4G8 pic.twitter.com/Lmt24T24lv

Wore my cycling hat to work and 2 people asked me what kind of hat I had and 1 had no idea what was on my head. I wonder how many are curious to ask. 🤔 pic.twitter.com/sQ35IDf9zQ

Finally reclaiming the figure 8 trail and turning it into Carnage. Some trail designs take time to come to be and others get approved in snap depending on many factors. Plenty of room to grow. #moretrailsclosertohome #allvolunteerorganization #trailbuilding #nonprofit pic.twitter.com/qnkPdzeNgI

311 is frustrating…they closed my request to fix this dangerous gap in the Columbia Tap Trail several times because I guess I reported in the wrong category (though no trail option) and they don’t have enough information to address (thought this photo was pretty obvious). pic.twitter.com/r8SSHKDEQB

Fransisco flew up from Mexico to buy this Pivot Cycles Firebird. These bikes have been incredibly popular and hard to come by, but we had what Fransisco was interested in. What a rad bike!#TexassPremierBikeShop #DestinationShop #LBS #PivotCycles #Firebird #MTB #Enduro pic.twitter.com/yxREsgnCnl
