About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Biking Hard Into 24 mph Wind Gusts, March Best Month Since July

Texbiker.net Posted on March 30, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 30, 2021

As March winds down the weather warms up some but strong winds make biking hard. Today’s bike ride started at 11:11 AM, about an hour earlier than yesterday because it warmed up faster. I rode my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike on my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. Just like the old days I went north along FM 2100 from Old Atascocita Road to FM 1960 but not on the road. The new road construction added a sidewalk beside the north bound lanes. With traffic now on the new lanes there is no room or shoulder to ride on and I rode on the new sidewalk. It needs some cleanup but it runs almost all the way to the railroad tracks. I biked 33.35 miles bumping my March total to 850.17 miles, the most miles in a month since last July when I rode 923 miles. Year to date I am at 2,061 miles, 4 miles behind 2020 on the is date. Today’s bike ride was the 6th time on this route; 4 times on my Canyon and 2 times on my Lynskey.

3-30-2021 Start of Bike Ride on the Canyon bike

I finished the bike ride at 1:45 PM with the wind picking up since the start. Weather at the start and finish: start 75 (87% humidity, 70.7 dew point), cloudy, wind S 11 mph; finish 81 (70% humidity, 69.9 dew point), overcast, wind S 15 mph gusts 24 mph. I overdressed with a shorts, a long sleeve jersey and a jacket. I should’ve wore a short sleeve jersey over the long sleeve one and left the jacket at home. Getting to FM 2100 I rode into a strong headwind. I thought on the way back to Kingwood the headwind would be a tailwind and it was sometimes. Biking west over Lake Houston the wind came from my left. Each time a gust hit me my Canyon got pushed to the right requiring a strong grip on the handlebars to maintain control. After exiting the causeway and turning right the tailwind reappeared.

Day 5 – Fredericksburg: Battled Headwinds Most of the Day

Sunday March 28, 2021, 38 miles (61 km) – Total so far: 208 miles (335 km) Had breakfast at the cafe located at the Hunter House Inn & Suites in Ingram. Headed out around 10:00. It was cool and the wind was already blowing from the northeast. The ACA route takes a tour of Kerrville before ending north out of town. Today’s route mostly stayed on ranch roads with little traffic. With the climbing and the headwind I didn’t get into Fredericksburg until after 4. Tonight I am camp at the Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park. It has a large RV park and for tent camping they only charge $10.

It is suppose to get down to 41F tomorrow morning so …

Day 20: Sierra Blanca – Valentine (70 miles)

Saturday March 20, 2021 Day 20 – Sierra Blanca to Valentine was another headwind day of riding. This time on 70 miles and 6 hrs in the saddle. Kudos again to Michael Dieterle for pulling us along. Drafting make riding into a headwind so much easier for those behind the lead cyclist. Mike has gone way above and beyond by helping us all out. We started late today since we slept in a bit and then went back to the Mexican restaurant for some huevos rancheros. When we did start riding within the first few miles Mike got a flat. Before the day was thru, he got another flat, and so did Nick. Texas has these …

Day 21: Valentine – Alpine (65 miles)

Sunday March 21, 2021 Day 21 – Valentine to Alpine was a third consecutive day with a headwind. We passed through Marfa where we discovered what the mysterious lights are…. UFO’s and they are cool with cyclist. Then towards Alpine. This campground “Lost Alaskan” is a luxury compared too the others. Alpine is a …

Day 22: Alpine – Rest Stop (117 miles)

Monday March 22, 2021 Day 22 – Alpine to some picnic rest area East of Sanderson. Today was an epic 117 mile ride. Tail winds most of the way. We picked up another rider today at one of our gas station stops. We’ll see how long he can stand our goofy group. By doing extra today, makes it easier for tomorrow. That is if we survive the night. Sleeping at a rest area … Something About Mary pops to mind. This is the second night I’m not …

Day 23: Rest Stop – Del Rio (78 miles)

Tuesday March 23, 2021 Day 23 – Some Rest Stop to Some RV park near Del Rio, TX … We survived the night sleeping at a rest stop… whew! Another hot one today with the worst tail wind ever. It just kept blowing right into our face all day long. Add this to never ending hill repeats making this the best kind of riding ever … NOT! No worries … tomorrow is another day of pretty much the same …. bring it on Texas … you won’t …

Day 24: Del Rio – Campwood (88 miles)

Wednesday March 24, 2021 Day 24 – Del Rio to Campwood we picked up a couple more riders, so now we are 8 … just a couple of college kids taking a gap year to travel. We have entered Hill Country in Texas. I never thought I’d find roads worse than Illinois, but here they are. Plus, they don’t believe in picking up roadkill. Countless numbers of …

Day 25: Campwood – Lost Maple Park (43 miles)

Thursday March 25, 2021 Day 25 – Lost in West Texas … we are in where they don’t like Verizon. So, a quick update while at a general store where they were kind enough to give us some WiFi… we ran into the kind ladies and sprinter van Tim… just so happens they are camping where we are tonight… so the group today will be 12 … and they are cooking an Indian Curry tonight… yum Yum. The campground at Lost Maple is great but …

Day 26: Lost Maple Park – Fredericksburg (71 miles)

Denton e-cargo bike company lands investment on ‘Shark Tank’

By Kevin Cummings | www.bizjournals.com

“Bunch bikes is sharing the joy of family biking across the county, so who wants to come along for the ride and make a bunch of money,” Bunch Bikes founder Aaron Powell asked as he walked onto the “Shark Tank” stage. And one investor answered.

The Denton-based e-cargo bike company landed a deal with Shark Barbara Corcoran. In exchange for a 15 precent stake in the company, Corcoran invested $100,000 in equity with an additional $150,000 as a loan.

Initially, Bunch Bikes was seeking $250,000 in exchange for a 10 percent equity …

20 Mph Gusts For Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 29, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 29, 2021

Sunday’s weather was damp and dreary so I didn’t bike but today was completely different. Blue sky, almost warm but with a strong wind as the bike ride happened. I started the bike ride at 12:09 PM after waiting for it to warm up to almost 70. Heading north on my Lynskey R300 bike I biked my “Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood” route extending it a little by going north over Caney Creek and then under US59/I-69 to head back to Kingwood. By the 2:40 PM finish I biked 32.23 miles. A good start for the week to get to 200+ miles. With March at 816.82 miles the most in a month since last October’s 822.29 miles which I can pass on tomorrow’s bike ride.

This was the 4th time biking this route in 2021, 3 times on my Canyon Endurace and 1 time on my Lynskey R300 bikes. The Drift camera setup is visible in the photo below nestled below the bike computer.

Overnight the temperature dropped to the low 40’s but warmed up as the morning sun moved higher. Weather conditions for the bike ride: start 69 (31% humidity, 37.1 dew point), a few clouds, wind E 10 mph; finish 71 (30% humidity, 38.3 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 13 mph gusts 20 mph. The wind increased during the ride making the return leg back to Kingwood harder with a headwind. An advantage of waiting to start was not wearing leg warmers. I did wear shorts, a long sleeve thermal jersey (because the chilly wind), and a windbreaker jacket. A glimpse of today’s attire and bike.

Day 4 – Ingram: Tough Day with Three Hike-A-Bike Sections

Saturday March 27, 2021, 62 miles (100 km) – Total so far: 170 miles (274 km) Left the fire station around 8:30 this morning headed to the Mill Creek Cafe. Finished breakfast and left Leakey around 9:45.I new I had two steep climbs today before getting to the campground at The Maples State Natural Area.

The morning started out overcast and it was pleasant riding. There wasn’t much traffic on the ranch road. In the first 18 miles there were two hike-a-bike sections where I walk the bike rather than wearing my self out by spinning. By now there were many motorcycles on the road. Luckily most were headed in the opposite direction I was headed.

Got to the junction of Ranch Roads 337 & 187 around noon. There is …
