About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Day 3 – Leakey: Hard day, ride cut in half

Friday March 26, 2021, 23 miles (37 km) – Total so far: 108 miles (174 km) Left the Los Rios Campground around 9:30 am. Stopped for breakfast at Casa Falcon in Camp Wood. The headed out on Ranch Road 337. I knew it was going to be a rough day due to the climbing. Traffic wasn’t too bad initially but as the day progressed started seeing more motorcycles. I started up the first climb but it became a hike-a-bike about a mile from the top.

A little ways before I got to the top there were several motorcycles stopped on the side of the road. Apparently one of the motorcyclists slid into the guard rail and broke is leg. He was doing ok when I passed him and responded to my comment. Shortly a …

The beauty of a backup bike …. and what you can learn from it

By throet | austinmountainbiking.com

It’s been 6 years since I bought my first full-suspension bike. Sure it was a happy day as any new-bike day is, but in reality the 2014 model I bought on clearance in 2015 was already outdated, old-school geo, 3x drivetrain, non-boost, etc. It was only a year-and-a-half later that I decided I wanted something lighter and more modern, which led me to the purchase of my 2017 Intense Primer that I have truly loved as my everyday bike for going on 5 years now. With the Primer out of commission while I await a frame replacement, I dusted off the old Trek Remedy 29er, a 140/140 heavy aluminum bike with a really short front-center and 70mm stem. Given how much my riding capabilities have advanced since the last time I even rode this old bike, I was asking myself, should I even be doing the same stuff on this bike that I do on my regular bike. What I quickly discovered is all that …

Balmy Second Saturday Of Spring At Mount Wichita

Durango Texas | durangotexas.blogspot.com

This final Saturday of the 2021 version of March is the first time in a long time, perhaps the first time this year, that I rode my bike south on the Circle Trail all the way to Mount Wichita.

It seems like only weeks ago Mount Wichita was covered with snow and freezing with a temperature below zero, because such was the case only weeks ago.

And now, today, that which was recently cold and white has turned warm and green.

As in a …

Passed Other Cyclists, Overcast Sky Replaced Blue, FM 2100 Loop Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 27, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 27, 2021

I messed around before today’s bike ride or I could’ve started sooner. Maybe the overcast sky affected my speed at getting ready. I started the bike ride at 10:004 AM and finished at 12:18 PM, about the time I started some bike rides this week. I needed 21 miles to make it a 200+ mile week. I rode my usual Saturday route, “Atascocita – FM 2100 – Walden” covering 30.7 miles in 2:11:59. My week now totals 209.7 miles with 644.2 road miles for March. My goal was 600 miles. This is the 4th 200+ mile week out of the last 5. Combining road miles and Zwift miles for March totals 784.59, the highest month since October 2020. This was the 5th time biking this route in 2021.

After the gorgeous weather yesterday an overcast sky moved in but the temperature didn’t go down much. Weather conditions: start 72 (96% humidity, 70.4 dew point), overcast, wind S 9 mph; finish 75 (88% humidity, 71.5 dew point), overcast, wind SE 7 mph. I played it safe wearing shorts, a long sleeve jacket, and a windbreaker jacket. That probably was more than I needed but I didn’t get overheated. Wind was lighter too. Humidity and dew point made for a muggy ride.

The new camera mount arrived yesterday and I used it today for the Drift camera. This setup can move between my Lynskey and Canyon bikes easily. The camera didn’t move around and the sound was decent. The external mic was mounted on the handlebar stem away from the camera. The pink dot covers the internal mic port.

Numerous other cyclists along the route today. I probably would have seen more if I left an hour earlier. Solid power output today after two 40+ mile days in a row.

Hotter’N Hell Hundred advance registration begins April 1

by: Bret Vetter | www.texomashomepage.com

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Hotter’N Hell Hundred, the largest sanctioned Century Bike Ride in America, will be back to pre-COVID normal this August with both in- person riders and virtual participation.

Hotter’N Hell Hundred Executive Director Chip Filer said going all virtual in 2020 was a tough decision but the right thing to do.

“It was just not safe for the community to bring that many people into town with all the problems that were going on with COVID-19,” Filer said.

But looking back, Filer said that decision may …

Day 2 – Camp Wood: Clear Blue Skies After Last Night’s Thunderstorm

Thursday March 25, 2021, 51 miles (83 km) – Total so far: 85 miles (137 km) Last night before I went to bed I decided to check the forecast. The weather service forecasted possible rain after midnight. The future radar showed the storms passing north of Brackettville but I decided to stake down the tent and put on the rain fly. Just before midnight I checked and the weather service had issued a tornado watch which included Brackettville. About a hour later I checked again and the weather service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning with up to 1 inch hail and wind gust to 60 mph.

Between 1 and 2 am I experience the first thunderstorm of the tour. It blew pretty good and did get some good downpours but I don’t think there was any hail. The tent held up and I didn’t see any leaks. The only rain which got in was rain which was blown under the rain fly.

Got up this morning, got everything dried up and …

GROUP RIDE (subtitles) – Fastest Pop A ever – 3/25/2021

Honest Tree | www.youtube.com

We think this may have been the fastest Pop A ever done. Low-wind condition, big group, and a first-time rider with us who happens to be a multiple-time masters world and national champion. And is still winning road races (this year) against the local elite pros/cat1s. Those aren’t your average pulls, LOL.

A Rotary Moment: Rep. Brady to speak at Lake Conroe club, Burn Your Buns bike ride fundraiser back for July 4

Kris Nordstrom McBride | www.houstonchronicle.com

… As our state opens up and we begin to cautiously return to a more normal life, we have some great news to share. Bridgewood Farms, one of the most beloved and respected organizations in our community, will host its annual bike ride again this year. Yes folks, ‘Burn Your Buns” is back – can we all say Yah! Yah!Yah! We missed the ride last year, and its return is cause for celebration, both for the cyclists who love this ride and for Bridgewood Farms, which has really suffered financially during COVID-19. The profits from this ride, along with some other new and returning events, will really help them get back to a comfortable financial place. Save the date and mark your calendars for Sunday morning, July 4. The ride begins early and we’re all back at Bridgewood Farms for …

He Was a Troubled Kid from a Broken Home. Then He Found Bikes.

By ian dille | www.bicycling.com

Bryan Albright learned early that life could be cruel and unpredictable. Cycling became the one thing he could count on.

THE FIRST BIKE WAS RED. And it had a flat tire.

Bryan rolled the bike across the street not long after I moved in. A cherubic, 11-year-old fifth grader, bright eyed and brown haired, trudging up my steep driveway, he found me in my garage where I was drilling holes for bike hooks, my cycling gear spread across the floor.

“Can you help me fix this?” he asked, or something along those lines. The wheel was out of true and the brakes rubbed, so we fixed those too. Then we …

Donate canned food, ride your bike to support the North Texas Food Bank

By Renee Umsted | lakewood.advocatemag.com

No one was prepared for the winter storm that struck Texas in February. No one was ready for a surge in the number of families in our city in need of clean water and food.

But the need came anyway.

After last month’s unprecedented weather, Kory Helfman knew the community, and especially the North Texas Food Bank, needed help. So Helfman, the owner of Ken’s Man’s Shop in Preston Royal Village, got together with other small businesses in the shopping center and organized the Preston Royal Pedal fundraiser.

“We want it to be almost a family event, because it’s in April,” Helfman says. The race is …

85 Degree Side Trip – Bike Ride to Roman Forest

Texbiker.net Posted on March 26, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 26, 2021

Beginning this post without mentioning the weather would be wrong. Blue sky, 77 degrees rising to 85 by the finish, what more could I ask for? After watching two bike races (Volta Ciclista a Catalunya and the E3 Saxo) I began today’s bike ride at 11:50 AM and finished at 4:05 PM. This is longer than usual because I stopped in Woodbranch to visit with a friend. To add to my mileage for the week I rode the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” plus the side trip for a total of 41.86 miles. This put the week’s total at 179 miles. With 2 potential biking days left in the week I should make this a 200+ mile week. I am only 9 miles behind last year’s mileage on this date; 1,965 versus 1,974.

Weather conditions: start 77 (45% humidity, 53.6 dew point), fair, wind E 12 mph; finish 85 (30% humidity, 50 dew point), a few clouds, wind SE 10 mph. I wore shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. I probably could’ve left one of the jerseys at home but it’s still March. I rode my Lynskey R300 bike today.

3-26-2021 Today's Bike for the ride-2

Strava labeled this ride as harder than my usual effort. I agree with the wind contributing to the hardness.

Using the Drift camera on the Lynskey is not easy so I used the GoPro Hero 7 Black in the handheld mode. USPS delivered a mount for the Drift camera that should solve that problem on both my Canyon and Lynskey bikes. I will test it on tomorrow’s bike ride.
