About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bent Back on The Southern Tier

By Andy Lamb | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 1 – Brackettville, TX: Easing back into bicycle touring

Wednesday March 24, 2021, 34 miles (54 km) – Total so far: 34 miles (54 km) Short ride today. Took advantage of the complimentary breakfast at the hotel this morning before I checked out. Left my hotel in Del Rio just after 10 am. Saw a group of bicycle tourist at the stop light across from the hotel on Veterans Blvd. A short distance from the hotel I was back on the Southern Tier. It felt good to be back on the tour.

Stopped to take a picture of the Welcome to Del Rio sign on my way out of town. Passed by Laughlin Air Force Base east of Del Rio. While I was taking a photo of one of the numerous historical signs 12 miles into today’s ride a …

Day 18: Rest Day

Thursday March 18, 2021 A well deserved rest day in El Paso, TX gives us a chance to rest our legs and be on the lookout for more tacos. We started the day by working on our bikes. Jon, getting a new chain, rear derailleur cable and some brake pads. Nicholas, only needed a cleaning of his chain and a brake adjustment. George, Mike and myself only needed some cleaning and chain lube.

Then it was time to get serious. Nicholas, went through his 1 million items in his panniers and was able to shed 10 pounds of gear. A short walk to the post office, followed by a stop for some tacos. Then it was Nicks idea to walk down to the border to say “Hello” to Mexico. 7 miles of walking is not …

Day 19: El Paso – Sierra Blanca (96 miles)

Friday March 19, 2021 Today was a tough ride. 96 miles into a headwind the entire way. Luckily, Mike “The Machine” Dieterle was able to pull us along the way. So far, Texas is not impressive to look at. The route took us on frontage roads that pass through several goat towns now, mostly due to the nearby interstate. The roads are mostly used by boarder patrol vehicles. Twice today we came upon a lady in distress. She is a …

Another Day in the Life of a Bike Dude

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Something woke me up. Normally it’s construction, the hospital helicopter, highway traffic, barking dog, full bladder, or all of the above. Sometimes it’s a dream but they fade from memory quickly. Oh wait, I remember. It was pain in my hip from overdoing it with the resistance bands two days ago. I applied an ice pack and went back to sleep. Woke up, repeated. Felt better, but still sore. I resolved to take it easy today. Which if you know me I’m all about easy, …

Wind Returns Biking Kingwood – Stroker Road – Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on March 25, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 25, 2021

Damp and dreary weather left the area. Sun returned before I started today’s bike ride at 11:56 AM. Wind returned too. Thinking of of route options I wanted one over 40 miles. I settled on a variation of the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route to avoid the construction on FM 2100. I called this variation the “Kingwood – Stroker Road – Kingwood” route. The last time I bike to Stroker Road was June 30th, 2020. Today’s route was longer than the other coming in at 46.47 miles versus 43 miles. I needed the extra miles to make up for the shorter Zwift ride yesterday. My week now totals 137.14 miles putting 200+ miles within reach weather permitting. March totals 571.1 road miles towards my 600 mile goal. Today was the longest bike ride this year.

Wind increased due to a front moving into the area. Getting to Stroker Road a tailwind pushed me but coming back the headwind tried to slow me down. During the ride the wind got stronger. What the weather conditions were: start 72 (61% humidity, 57.5 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NW 12 mph; finish 79 (35% humidity, 49.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind NW 14 mph gusts 22 mph. I wasn’t sure the temperature would get to the 80 degree forecast so I wore shorts, long sleeve jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. By the time I finished at 3:34 PM I looked at the jacket and saw salt stains from sweating but I didn’t feel overly hot. I think the strong wind took care of that.

I modified the Drift camera setup, adding shelf liner under the camera to keep it from moving and isolate picking up sound from the handlebar. I also moved the external mic from resting on top of the camera hoping to cut down on the noise and put a cover on the builtin mic to mute it some. Wind noise still shows up but not quite as bad. I am waiting on a mount to move the Drift camera below my bike computer.

With the strong wind and power output Strava concluded today’s bike ride was harder than my usual efforts.

Denton cargo bike company owner spent months preparing for ‘Shark Tank’ appearance airing this week

By Amber Gaudet | dentonrc.com

Aaron Powell has always had a love of bicycles. When he and his family came back from a trip to Sweden a few years ago, that love had intensified and with it, a desire to continue biking with his children, but he couldn’t find the family cargo bikes that were popular abroad.

So he decided to make his own.

Three years later, Powell’s company, Bunch Bikes, could become a household name as his vision for revolutionizing family biking in the U.S. is presented on a national stage. Viewers will get …

Study finds coronavirus safety communication matters for bike share ridership

Bruce Forey | www.utsa.edu

MARCH 24, 2021 — A survey by a UTSA student-professor team revealed interesting insights into why people used bike sharing programs during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic.

Greg Griffin, assistant professor in urban and regional planning, led the study design, and graduate student Jeffrey Jobe led writing the newly-published study. It started as a partnership with Bike Share San Antonio and its executive director JD Simpson, who wanted to know how coronavirus concerns would impact ridership during the pandemic. The survey was conducted in May 2020. Based on the initial …

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Community members have come together to find a man’s stolen bike.

First Time Zwifting The French Moule Ma Poule

Texbiker.net Posted on March 24, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 24, 2021

Damp and dreary outside drove me into Zwift’s worlds. I waited until after the finish of stage of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. By the time I decided biking outside wasn’t going to happen the events I rode in the past were too soon or past. After getting dressed I went to Zwift, looked at the routes in France and selected the Moule Ma Poule which I have not rode before. Before starting I went to ZwiftInsider.com to get an idea of the course. To keep ahead of my daily mileage goal I needed to ride at least 19.4 miles which is longer than 1 lap. After biking 1:10:37 the distance totaled 20.29 miles.

The course went up two climbs and two shorter bumps for a total of 935 feet. More than I planned on but I did it. The first one came at the beginning and repeated at 14.6 miles. I wasn’t alone on the course as you can see in the video. Sometimes I rode between groups and in groups. Some screenshots. The ones with the big time boxes for a KOM and then a sprint.

Since this was a new route for me Strava showed a bunch of medals: 4 gold and 4 silver.
