About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Day 0 – Staging in Del Rio: Putting the bent back together

Tuesday March 23, 2021 The bike box was in the lobby when I arrived at the hotel early this morning. I carried to my room before I went to sleep.

After I got up, started unboxing my bike. Only a couple of minor issues. Both tail lights came apart during the shipment. Some how I could only find three of the 4 AAA batteries in the box. Some how one AAA battery found it’s way out of the box. The box had 4 hand holds. Lesson learned: next time remove the tail lights and put them in a small box. The rear rack needed to be adjusted when …

Wind Slowed, Temperature Up After The Rain – Bike Ride to FM 2100 and Back

Texbiker.net Posted on March 23, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 23, 2021

The wind slowed down and the temperature went up, a good combination. After watching the ITT at the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya I got ready for my bike ride. Not as intense as the ITT but that’s okay. Starting at 11:48 AM I rolled away on my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike riding what I call the “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” route. With the new starting streets in Kingwood I biked 33.66 miles. This si the 4th time biking this route in 2021. My week now totals 70.37 miles and March stands at 525.2 miles, 75 miles away from my goal. With 1,856 miles year to date I am 17 miles less than 2020 at this date. I finished the bike ride at 2:19 PM.

  • 3-23-2021 Bike Ride FM2100 at Old Atascocita Rd-3
  • 3-23-2021 Bike Ride FM2100 at Old Atascocita Rd-2

Before sunrise this morning a thunderstorm front moved through the area dropping .42″ of rain. By the time I left on my bike ride the streets were dry which made the timing perfect. The weather conditions for my bike ride: start 73 (59% humidity, 57.6 dew point), fair, wind variable 7 mph; finish 79 (34% humidity, 48.3 dew point), haze dust, wind W 12 mph. After yesterday’s strong wind today was much better though it did increase while I was on the road. I dressed lighter with shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey on top. The choice felt comfortable the whole ride.

I tried a different camera setup using the Drift camera mounted on the handlebar stem and the GoPro Hero 7 Black as the handheld. The Drift audio was bad so the portions of the video with music was the Drift clips without the audio. I am trying to figure out how to get the Drift audio to resemble the GoPro. The clips are shorter too.

One Windy Bike Ride, Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on March 22, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 22, 2021

One windy bike ride today. After watching stage 1 of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya I got ready for the bike ride. Rolling out at 12:14 PM on my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike I chose my “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route. I enjoyed the miles to SH 242 to the north but the return ride was into a strong headwind. I finished at 3:13 PM after biking 36.71 miles. March road miles stand at 491.5, 109 short of my goal.

Here’s what the weather was like: start 72 (60% humidity, 57.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 15 mph gusts 30 mph; finish 73 (57% humidity, 56.9 dew point), overcast, wind SE 20 mph. The first day in awhile with the temperature in the 70’s. I lightened up my attire wearing shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. I wished the jacket could’ve broke the wind to a slower speed on the way back to Kingwood.

My video used 2 cameras and recorded a majority of the bike ride. A different video rather than short clips. I will let my comments in the video describe how the bike ride went.
