About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Riverside Ride and Kidz Fest peddles good times for all ages in Victoria

By Chase Rogers | www.victoriaadvocate.com

This year’s annual Riverside Ride in Victoria drew dozens of biking connoisseurs from the region like past years, but Shannon Longoria was poised to shake it up for the event’s 13th year.

“We wanted to get the kids out and into the sun and fresh air,” the Kiwanis Club vice president said over the live music and soft hum of attendees at DeLeon Plaza on Saturday. “We are all about kids at the Kiwanis Club, so it made sense to make this event all about kids also. …

March 2021: Getting Ready

Friday March 12, 2021 OK, we’re about one week out from the start of our Southern Tier ride. I’m so excited to be going, and couldn’t be happier that I get to start the trip with my son and (hopefully) end the trip with my wife. There could also be other surprise guests along the route (keeping my fingers crossed for a Batman drop-in). If all goes well, Jeffrey will accompany me from San Diego to El Paso, TX over the first two weeks of the ride. After that, I plan to ride solo until getting to eastern Mississippi, where Heidi and I plan to meet up. From there, we are planning on approx. 7 days to cross Florida and reach the Atlantic Ocean.

I had a few options when planning this trip, but chose to follow ACA’s Southern Tier route due to a combination of timing, distance and weather. The timing was essential as I knew that I would be in a career change during MAR-APR so this would be …

Travel Day to San Diego

Saturday March 20, 2021, 9 miles (14 km) – Total so far: 9 miles (14 km) …And the trip has officially begun! We made it safely out of Virginia this morning and arrived in San Diego by 1pm local time. From there, it was over to the hotel to unpack and assemble the bikes and then go for a quick test ride to the ocean. Jeffrey’s bike looks great, while I have to make some minor adjustments to the rear derailleur on mine as some of my gears were slipping on the test ride. Oh, and we had an opportunity to test the climbing gears in San Diego too – Hill St. over by Sunset Cliffs was very appropriately named!

We were met today by one of Jeffrey’s best friends Jake and his girlfriend Leslie. They live out here and …

Day 17: Las Cruces – El Paso (50 miles)

Wednesday March 17, 2021 We started the day by shaking the pounds of sand out of out tents. The night was exceptionally cold, and the 40 mph winds blew sand everywhere. The ride today was easy and weather was beautiful. Slowly, we are losing the scenery of Arizona and New Mexico for the flatlands of Texas. Another flat change on the roadside, this time for Jon. That didn’t slow us down as we kept moving swiftly down the roads and bike path. The “Rio Grande” we crossed several times and rode along could use some water otherwise the kayaks won’t be useful at all. A quick stop at a bike shop in El Paso then on the …

Day 18: Rest Day

Thursday March 18, 2021 A well deserved rest day in El Paso, TX gives us a chance to rest our legs and be on the lookout for more tacos. We started the day by working on our bikes. Jon, getting a new chain, rear derailleur cable and some brake pads. Nicholas, only needed a cleaning of his chain and a brake adjustment. George, Mike and myself only needed some cleaning and chain lube.

Then it was time to get serious. Nicholas, went through his 1 million items in his panniers and was able to shed 10 pounds of gear. A short walk to the post office, followed by a stop for some tacos. Then it was Nicks idea to …

Day 19: El Paso – Sierra Blanca (96 miles)

Friday March 19, 2021 Today was a tough ride. 96 miles into a headwind the entire way. Luckily, Mike “The Machine” Dieterle was able to pull us along the way. So far, Texas is not impressive to look at. The route took us on frontage roads that pass through several goat towns now, mostly due to the nearby interstate. The roads are mostly used by boarder patrol vehicles. Twice today we came upon a lady in distress. She is a 76 year old lady riding the southern tier with …

Denton’s big cleanup is coming in smaller doses this year

By Justin Grass | dentonrc.com

As part of Keep Denton Beautiful’s 33rd annual Great American Cleanup, the A-train Rail Trail got a weekend face-lift, with Bike Denton volunteers removing about a dozen trash bags’ worth of litter Saturday morning.

Typically, Denton’s cleanup is held as a single-day event, but this year’s runs the entire month of March. Carly Weld, program and volunteer coordinator for Keep Denton Beautiful, said the change is helping distance groups and spread out supplies and tools — such as litter tongs, gloves and bags — more efficiently.

“The idea is straightforward — in Denton, we clean up roadways, waterways, parks and …

Briefly Lost Biking Kingwood Streets and Trails

Texbiker.net Posted on March 21, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 21, 2021

I started today’s bike ride at 1:43 PM after getting home from church and getting ready to ride. I decided to combine some different streets and greenbelt trails in Kingwood for variety naming the route “Kingwood Streets and Trails”. I even got lost when I tried a new entrance into Royal Brook but found my way back to streets I knew. Since the streets are new I did expect them to show up on the map. With the different combination I biked 22.25 miles putting the week’s total at 162.8 miles. This broke my string of 200+ mile weeks. The week’s summary is below. So far in March I rode 454.8 road miles (600 mile goal) and 120.1 Zwift miles (75 mile goal) for a total of 574.89 miles. Not riding Friday and 2 shorter Zwift rides accounted for not reaching 200 miles for the week.

3-21-2021 Week Bike Rides Summary

Today’s weather was chiller than I expected with the forecasted high of 71 degrees all it could must was 66 degrees at the start and 69 when I finished at 3:33 PM. Wind increased during ride explaining why I pedaled harder and went slower. I dressed warmer than necessary but felt comfortable with the wind chill. Weather conditions: start 66 (54% humidity, 48.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 7 mph; finish 69 (48% humidity, 48.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 9 mph gusts 18 mph.

Biking the trails I go slower because of other people and the twist and turns. I got a workout but didn’t go as fast as an all road bike ride. Strava declared my ride was easier than my usual efforts but it didn’t feel that when battling the headwind.

Hallsville Mayor offers update on TXDOT project

By Bridget Ortigo | www.marshallnewsmessenger.com

HALLSVILLE — Hallsville Mayor Jesse Casey on Tuesday offered an update to the Hallsville city council members about the Texas Department of Transportation grant project soon to be completed in the city.

Last year, the city of Hallsville was one of 18 submitted projects awarded part of a $15 million TxDOT grant to build a new sidewalk and updated roadway near one of its Hallsville ISD campuses. The project would allow students and pedestrians a safer route to and from the school.

TxDOT Atlanta District Representative Marcus Sandifer said at the time the Texas Transportation Commission approved $24 million for 30 projects across the state that will build sidewalks, shared use paths and bike lanes in cities across that applied for the aid. …

Video: Multi-year project to add bike lanes around city

By Ashley Soriano | www.kgns.tv

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – Drivers in central Laredo may have noticed construction crews over the past three weeks around the Santa Maria Avenue and Chicago Street area.

That’s because the city is working on a 20 year plan to add close to 100 miles of bike lanes to increase safety both for cyclists and drivers.

KGNS sat with the city’s planning director to talk about the future of the project.

”Where we have streets that are wide, why not make them a little less wide and then provide a safe place for people to get around on their bicycle?”

In just 10 years, Laredoans can expect a …

Bouncing Back From The Shot, FM 2100 Detour Bike Ride to Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on March 20, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 20, 2021

Today spring arrived but it took awhile for the temperature to get above my 60 degree threshold. While I waited I watched the last 115 K of Milan – SanRemo race on GCN+. The race was 299 K long and started at 3 AM this morning. The long broadcast required a change of commentators with 70 K left. I didn’t need to change though. I didn’t bike yesterday because of a light reaction to my second COVID-19 vaccination shot. That meant this week wouldn’t be a 200+ mile week.

My usual Saturday route wasn’t available today due to FM 2100 being closed in Huffman at the railroad tracks. I rode my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route leaving off the Fairlake Lane, Old Atascocita Road, and FM 2100 north part. Starting at 12:46 PM riding my Lynskey R300 bike I wasn’t sure if FM 1960 traffic and detour would allow me to ride east to FM 2100 but no problem. Watch the video to see the traffic situation.

3-20-2021 Bike Ride Today's Bike

The temperature went up and down before getting to 60 and staying there long enough for me to leave on the bike ride. I bundled up with shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, windbreaker jacket, and full finger gloves. I wore a new pair of Sidi Alba-2 Mega shoes for the first time (see below). Weather conditions: start 61 (45% humidity, 39.1 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 6 mph; finish 66 (37% humidity, 39 dew point), fair, wind NE 10 mph. Getting to Huffman required battling a headwind and my legs were taxed by the time I turned around just east of FM 2100. The ride back to the west with a tailwind helped them to recover.

  • 3-20-2021 First Time Sidi Alba-2 Mega Shoes-2

No other cyclists along the route today. Probably because of my late start and the detour around FM 2100. I achieved “Local Legend” according to Strava on the segment “Eastward to 2100”.

3-20-2021 Strava Bike Ride Summary

I biked 32.1 miles today putting the week’s total at 140.55 miles, March road miles at 432.6 (168 left to reach my goal), and overall March miles at 552.64.
