About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The overarching goal of the Safety and Mobility Study was to understand how growth in Austin, and increased use of the Trail, has impacted the Trail experience for residents and visitors, and to establish a vision to ensure the Trail will continue to be a natural sanctuary for all of its users.

Trail width and surfacing emerged as …

In The Clutches of 28 MPH Wind As I Check Out FM 2100 Construction

Texbiker.net Posted on March 10, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 10, 2021

Before starting today’s bike ride I overloaded on bike races from Europe. I watched Paris – Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico hoping the finishes would not happen at the same time. Fortunately they were a few minutes apart and I saw each. I think it is unusual to have the leader of each race be from the same team and won today’s stage. With that out of the way I got ready for today’s bike ride on my “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I wasn’t sure about the Huffman part but I rode north on the new unopened FM 2100 to see how far it went. As I kept riding I got within a couple hundred yards of the railroad crossing at FM 1960 in Huffman. I walked my Lynskey R300 through some rebar to the shoulder of FM 2100 and continued to FM 1960. The last time I rode this route was January 26th, 2021. There was an electronic sign alerting traffic that FM 2100 at FM 1960 will be closed March 19th through March 23rd. I suspect the construction will be busy pouring concrete there. The video contains clips of the construction area. This was the 4th time biking this route in 2021.

At the 11:33 AM start I checked the weather app for conditions at Bush IAH and the wind was 9 mph but not long after that it was obvious the wind picked up. All the way to FM 2100 and Old Atascocita Road I battled the headwind. At the 2:10 PM finish I checked again and understood the strength of the headwind, from the south at 20 mph with 28 mph gusts. I took a gamble on the temperature forecast and wore shorts, a new long sleeve jersey, and short sleeve jersey over it. The forecast said 80 degrees but it didn’t get there while I was biking. Weather as I biked: start 74 (71% humidity, 63.9 dew point), overcast, wind S 9 mph; finish 73 (74% humidity, 64.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 20 mph gusts 28 mph. March is a windy month and it is showing it.

I biked 33.14 miles which moved my week total to 102.76 miles and the month to 306.74 miles. Road miles for March total 229 with a 600 mile goal. The other miles are on Zwift.

Fighting the wind shows in the power zone data from Golden Cheetah. On the way back to Kingwood the tailwind generally helped though riding west over Lake Houston still meant both hands on the bars to counter the gusts pushing my front wheel. I felt good riding my Lynskey R300 today even with the wind. Legs were putting out the power. Last week my butt was sore after riding the Lynskey and I was concerned the Koobi saddle might be the problem but that ride was after riding on Zwift using my Blue Norcross AL bike and a hard Prologic saddle. I think the Zwift riding was the cause.

Why are Houstononians still parking in the bike lane?

Anavid Reyes | www.click2houston.com

HOUSTON – It’s shocking how easily a cyclist can get sideswiped by a car parked in a bike lane while the vehicle is trying to pull out of the lane. Our traffic expert Anavid Reyes got the opportunity to get a deeper perspective on how this issue is impacting cyclists day-to-day as she spoke with a frustrated Houston bicyclist who has to dangerous dodge parked cars in bike lanes throughout the city of Houston, even though it is now illegal to do so.

The bicycle lane violation was approved by City Council last October. Initially, warnings were issued during a 90-day grace period, before Park Houston officially began giving out tickets, which started January 14 of this year, but according to Wilson Calvert, even though the …

Avoiding Some Wind Biking Spring Creek Greenway To Pundt Park

Texbiker.net Posted on March 9, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 9, 2021

Until I was close to starting the bike ride I was going to ride my “Atascocita South – Walden – FM 2100” route but after looking at my home weather station and seeing 73 degrees I changed my mind. Instead I rode the Spring Creek Greenway to John Pundt Park. I shortened the ride because I started at 11:06 AM. Usually I ride to I-45 or Dennis Johnston Park. When I took a screenshot of the Bush IAH weather before leaving the strong wind reinforced my decision. My original route would’ve been into a very strong headwind while the greenway trees shielded me and a tailwind until reaching Pundt Park.

The bike ride went 38.33 miles getting me ahead of the pace to reach my 600 road mile goal for March at 195.9 miles compared to 174.2 miles if I average 19.4 miles for 31 days. YTD miles for 2021 total 1,485 compared to 2020’s 1,433, +52 miles. The only other year over 1,000 miles by this date is 2017 with 1,011 miles. I’m waiting for an organized ride to come up nearby.

The wind at the start of the ride was strong from the SE at 23 mph with 29 mph gusts. It didn’t take long after I started pedaling my Canyon Endurace bike to feel that wind. The sun was out at the start but the clouds began covering it up and I was glad I wore a windbreaker jacket over the long sleeve jersey, especially when I got in the shade on the greenway. Weather conditions: start 73 (58% humidity, 57.3 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 23 mph gusts 29 mph; finish 72 (62% humidity, 58 dew point), overcast, wind SE 15 mph. At the 2:04 PM finish the wind slowed to 15 mph but still felt chilly when I rode in the shade.

Riding the greenway is different from the roads. There are no stop signs or traffic lights to get a short rest, the turns are numerous and tight, uphills are short but some are intense. Other people on the trail was not n that many, maybe more walkers than bikers. I saw several people riding horses beside the greenway, something I don’t usually see. One person rode a one wheel electric skateboard while his companion rode her mountain bike. Two recumbent bikes passed by.

This screenshot took place as I neared the exit heading back to Kingwood.
