About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Cyclist says he was badly beaten, robbed on Buffalo Bayou trail

Rose-Ann Aragon | www.click2houston.com

HOUSTON – One local cyclist is sharing a word of caution after being attacked by two men in daylight Thursday night.

Brett Gehring said he was riding his bicycle down the bike trail along Buffalo Bayou headed south towards the Elysian Street Bridge near 255 when he was brutally attacked by two strangers.

“It’s one of those trails where you only have one in and one out so there’s nowhere to go,” Brett Gehring said.

It happened around 6 p.m. Gehring said two men in their late teens or early twenties were near the trail.

“These kids were hanging out right behind the …

Bicyclist dies after being hit and dragged 600 feet by vehicle

By Bailie Myers and Ryan Cross | www.newschannel10.com

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – Police said a man was killed after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a vehicle yesterday.

Officers were sent at 9:08 p.m. on reports of a person in the roadway in the 100 block of S. Eastern Street, near the intersection with SE 3rd Avenue.

“As a responder, it’s hard to show up on these scenes. You show up, and the first thing that goes through your mind is, ‘How can someone just leave this person out here like this, and this is a human being that has just been left out here to die?’, and it’s hard for me to fathom as a person how I could just leave somebody there like that,” said Jeb Hilton, PIO for the Amarillo Police Department.

Upon arrival, police found 36-year-old Dallas Blake McBeth in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. …

Zwifting With The HERD Tuesday Social Ride in France on The R.G.V.

Texbiker.net Posted on March 2, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 2, 2021

As I ate breakfast I watched the Le Samyn Dames and Le Samyn races on GCN+. The weather looked warmer there than here with our forecasted high of 60. After I finished watching the races I checked Zwift for an event. I chose The HERD Tuesday Social Ride Group D. Today’s route followed the France R.G.V or as ZwiftInsider.com aptly describes it, ““R.G.V” stands for route grand vitesse, or “high speed road”. A fitting name, since this route is definitely one for the sprinters. Though only 24km in length, it includes three timed sprint segments!” Route Basics: Length: 24.1 km (15.0 miles), Elevation: 107 m (351‘), Lead-In: 1 km (0.6 miles). The ride was 60 minutes rather than distance based. I finished with 22.42 miles which put me at 45 miles towards my 75 Zwift miles goal for March. Road miles are zero but the weather is supposed to get above 60 tomorrow so I should get outdoors.

The ride began at 11:55 AM with a quick pace. I wasn’t sure how long I could stick with the front group, especially after we rode through the fence and away from the leader. I found a group that I kept up with for a long stretch. According to the ‘Nearby Zwifters” board my position ranged from 143 to 165 out of the 752 on course. As the timer moved passed the fractions of 60 minutes I thought I might drop back behind the fence because the pace was so quick but I told myself to wait until the next milestone and before I knew it the finish was coming up. This time I used my powerup but I don’t think it made much difference other than not letting it go to waste. Several stats pointed to a consistent ride helped by not too much climbing: average speed 21.7 mph, average power 144 watts, max power 290 watts. Only 18% of the 60 minutes was in power zones 1 and 2, a very low number for me. Zones 3 and 4 accounted for 59% of the 60 minutes. ZwiftPower.com results placed me at 142 out of 278 with profiles.

The Austin Transportation Department decided last month on Longhorn Dam’s new bike and pedestrian bridge, which is designed to increase safety on Pleasant Valley Road and connect trails and parks in the area.

The bridge’s design is “wishbone style” and will be located near Guerrero Park on Pleasant Valley Road. After removing the current pedestrian bridge, new walkways will connect Holly Shores Park, Longhorn Shores Park and the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. The bridge is expected to be completed in 2025.

Zwifting With ZZRC Group D On Watopia Tempus Figit

Texbiker.net Posted on March 1, 2021 by Rick AnkrumMarch 1, 2021

The string of days with the temperature above 60 to almost 80 ended this morning so my bike ride moved to Zwift. I picked the ZZRC Sub 2.0 Group D ride starting at 12:40 PM. The route was Watopia Tempus Figit lasting 60 minutes. In that time I biked 22.58 miles with 177 feet of climbing. According to ZwiftInsider.com the course, ““Tempus Fugit” is Latin for “time flees (or flies)”, and this is certainly a flat, fast route. Released as part of Zwift’s Fuego Flats desert expansion, it is designed as an out and back TT race course, with the lead-in from the desert start pens making the course come in right around 20km in length for one lap.” Route Basics: Length: 17.3 km (10.7 miles), Elevation: 16 m (52‘), Lead-In: 2.4 km (1.5 miles)

February 15th was my last Zwift ride making me a little rusty on setting up computer, livestream, and warming up. No glitches hardware wise. My legs needed to warm up and get my Wahoo Snap trainer humming along. At first I wasn’t sure I could stay with the group but I did. Getting the “Return To The Group” warning several times meant I was near the front. The flat course helped me stay with the group. I kept the camera mostly on #1 for a view of those around me and the fence up front. At the finish the Fuego Flats Reverse results put me 325th out of 769. At 59:30 the ride leader released the people who wanted to sprint. I still had some power left so I increased my speed but I forgot to use my powerup. ZwiftPower.com results list me as 30th out of 71 users with profiles.

A new personal record on the Tempus Figit segment in Strava.
