About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

16 Months of Consecutive Daily Bicyling

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

It’s that time of the month, again. The 11th, that is, which is when I began biking every single day back in October of 2019. For some reason, I cain’t quit you, bicycling. That streak will be tested Monday, when we might see the coldest temperatures in a decade and three to five inches of snow — in Austin, Texas. I may have to pull out the old metal home trainer stand and do my 14.3 miles* in the relative warmth of the inside. I say relative because this house leaks air like the White House press office, and the space heaters can’t keep up. Anyway, the miles add up, although at a slower pace than last year. That’s …

Tour de Zwift Stage 8 Group C Bike Ride In Paris on Champ-Elysees

Texbiker.net Posted on February 11, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 11, 2021

The promised cold weather (41 degrees) arrived and I stayed inside to ride stage 8 of the Tour de Zwift. The Group C ride in Paris on the Champ-Elysees covered 3 laps plus a lead in from the starting pens. When I opened the Zwift Companion app before going to the ride 39,771 people were in the game, not all in the Tour de Zwift though. Over 710 showed up for the group C ride. I hung around 510 to 525 for most of the bike ride. I rode 14.55 miles and climbed 430 feet. I rode with other people almost the entire bike ride staying in the draft to ease the pedaling.

Earlier this morning I watched the Tour de Provence where the peloton raced in short sleeves and the sun along the beach at the finish. Thanks GCN+.

Just like biking outdoors I needed a few minutes to warm up. The group didn’t ride away from but did thin out as the fliers raced ahead. Not sure why they don’t move up to group B or A if they want to race.

ZwiftInsider describes the route: “As the final stage of first-ever Virtual Tour de France, Zwift’s Champs-Élysées route was designed to mimic what may be the most recognizable road in the world: the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris. … Avenue des Champs-Élysées runs between the Place de la Concorde (to the east) and the Place de l’Étoile (to the west, where the Arc de Triomphe is located). The official Champs-Élysées finishing circuit loops around the Jardin des Tuileries on the east end, and around the Arc de Triomphe on the west end. You will begin with a lead-in around Jardin des Tuileries. The road around the back of the garden includes a short ramp down and back up – the steepest sections of the circuit. Once you finish your loop around the garden you will soon ride through the start/finish arch, which begins the official circuit.”

Lead-ins mess up my calculations for lap length. I didn’t know there was a 1.9 mile lead-in so I kept waiting for the lap counter to tick over at 4.8 miles but when I saw the lap marker on the route profile at the bottom of the box above nearby Zwifters I re-calculated the lap length to 4.1 miles. Climbing per lap was not bad mainly consisting of going under the road at one end and climbing to the Arch Triumph at the other end.

As a change instead of listening to music during the bike ride I listened to the Zwift Cast podcast. Some of the podcast covered the Tour de Zwift.

From Zwiftpower.com I finished 309th of the riders with profiles there.

Denied A Stem Ride, Zwifting With ZHCC in Watopia

Texbiker.net Posted on February 10, 2021 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 10, 2021

I hoped to ride outdoors today but the below 60 degree temperature and sporadic rain said no. Before Zwifting today I installed a new FSA Gossamer stem on my Lynksey R300 bike. Nothing wrong with the old stem except it is 100mm long and the new one is 90mm long. I wanted to test the new stem but not today; actually it might be a bunch of days if the weather forecast holds for the next week. Photos of the stems.

With the stem installation finished I checked Zwift for events. The ZHCC Sub 2 Wednesday Gravel Rash started at 12:30 PM which gave enough time o get ready. The course ran on the Watopia Serpentine 8 for 60 minutes. ZwiftInsider.com describes the course, “Introduced in Zwift’s December 2020 update, Serpentine 8 is the first route to use the new Mayan Bridge road – a twisty stretch of dirt/stone/wood road crossing the jungle waters and bisecting the Mayan Jungle Circuit. This is a figure 8 route in terms of road layout, but it is ridden in such a way as to cover all roads (the Jungle Circuit and Mayan Bridge) in both directions. It also features a substantial lead-in which includes your first trip over the bridge.“

The route is 11.8 miles long but today biking 60 minutes we covered the course more than one time. My distance came in at 15.69 miles and 768 feet climbing. The 60 minutes ended while climbing which I would’ve preferred to be downhill. When I signed onto the Zwift companion app over 42,000 people were there. At the finish of my bike ride nearby Zwifters totaled 12,116 which I think means the same course but not necessarily the same event. At the start the event had 69 participants. ZwiftPower.com lists the ride and my results along with other Zwifters.

Strava results. 4 medals out of the 6 segments shown.
