Video: Houston Bike Lanes: Nearly 1,800 miles of high-comfort bikeways planned for Houston

HOUSTON – Right now, there are a total of 340 miles of high comfort bike lanes, meaning all ages and abilities can safely use these bike lanes and 22 miles of those are on-street protected bike-only lanes. Diploma Dash will be virtual this year with new options

JANUARY 20, 2021 — Get ready to join one of the most popular UTSA events once again—this time in new ways. The UTSA Alumni Association’s annual Diploma Dash will be virtual this year, with proceeds supporting scholarships for current students.

“While we are disappointed that we cannot gather for Diploma Dash this year, we also did not want our community to have to miss out on what has become an important, signature event,” said Steve Woodall ’11, association interim director. “Because the event is virtual, we are excited to be able to offer new race options that people can do safely in their own neighborhoods in San Antonio and beyond.”

Sponsored in part by Credit Human, the virtual Diploma Dash gives alumni, faculty, staff, students, community members and dogs the opportunity to run, walk and even bike this year for a good cause. Box Hill Climbing At Tour de Zwift Stage 4

I kept waiting for the outside temperature to get above 60 degrees but as my usual departure time approached I looked at the Zwift companion app and saw that Stage 4 of the Tour de Zwift showed up. Forsaking the outdoor ride I got ready to ride the TDZ. Group C ride started at 12:03 PM giving me time to test the new ANT+ USB dongle I received yesterday. This backs up the Bluetooth connections that gave me trouble last week. Plugging it into my desktop computer I started Zwift. After a minute or so the blinking Bluetooth icon in the upper left was joined by the blinking ANT+ icon. I woke the Wahoo Snap trainer and the cadence sensor. I added the heart rate sensor later. Both showed connected though I wasn’t sure whether it was Bluetooth or ANT+. This didn’t really matter as long as they worked.

All set, I got dressed and with about 8 minutes before the start I got on my Blue Norcross AL bike and pedaled slowly to warm up and keep the sensors connected.The route for Stage 4 followed the Greater London Loop for 13.41 miles though I rode 13.64 because I didn’t stop as soon as I crossed the finish line. I expected 852 of climbing but only did 748 feet which was fine with me. When I got to 1 mile left I wondered how the course would add the 104 feet. Fortunately I didn’t find out. Box Hill provided most of the climbing. Box Hill is a long 5% climb as you can see in the profile from Strava below. The London subway threw some 105 to 15% climbs but over a much shorter distance.

I can’t find riding this exact route before. Because of that I accumulated a pile of medals: 4 gold, 24 silver, and 5 bronze. In ZWiftPower.com I came in at 225 out of 244. Most of the ride I was around 100 ahead of the last rider.

Slightly Above Normal Weather Biking to FM 2100

No need to wait as long to start today’s bike with the warmer temperature, almost early spring like. Rolling my Canyon Endurace bike out the driveway I pushed the start button my Bolt computer at 11:41 AM. The route went south and east on what I call the “Atascocita – Walden – FM 2100” route. The wind was from the south at 14 mph and the temperature 70 degrees. Leg warmers not required today though biking across Lake Houston was chilly as the wind carried the chill from the water. I wasn’t the only bicyclist out as I encountered 3 others during the ride. I finished the ride at 2:04 PM.

I chose this route rather than riding north on FM 2100 through the construction zone. The last time I took FM 2100 north the workers were where the new pavement ended and I walked through the dirt to the cross street.

Weather summary: start 70 (65% humidity, 57.3 dew point), overcast, wind S 14 mph; finish 74 (54% humidity, 56.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph. I wore shorts, a long sleeve thermal jersey, and a windbreaker jacket. As the ride progressed the overcast sky began to break up letting sun through which my uncovered legs enjoyed. I collected some vitamin D today. I believe today’s weather was slightly above normal.

Biking to the FM 2100 turnaround was into a headwind holding my speed down some but I made up for it on the ride back to Kingwood improving my overall average speed to 14.1 mph until I returned to Kingwood. The sun felt good and the 31.9 miles moved me closer to my 300 mile goal for the month leaving 73 miles to go. 3 30+ miles and I will take care of the goal with miles to spare.
